Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is upholstery cleaning?

From your carpets to your drapes to your furniture, all fabrics need to be cleaned. Cleaning upholstery, or the fabric on your furniture, removes the dirt and oils that are transferred to couches and chairs through regular use. Because furniture upholstery can be delicate and colors can fade easily, it’s often a good idea to let professional sofa cleaners handle the job. They’ll determine the type of fabric — usually cotton, linen, wool, suede or microfiber — and the appropriate method for cleaning it, either steam-cleaning or applying a dry-cleaning solvent. In general, cleaning an entire piece of furniture includes a pretreatment, cleaning, and neutralizing rinse to the body, plus removing and cleaning all cushions and cleaning all crevices.

An upholstery cleaner may clean the entire piece of furniture, on a regular schedule or by request, or do spot treatments to remove pet, food, drink, or oil and grease stains. Furniture can also be deodorized to remove the smell of pets or tobacco smoke. Furniture that’s used often, like that in your family room, should be cleaned once a year to keep it fresh and extend its life. Sofa cleaners often also offer repair services to mend tears in fabric or patch holes in leather.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a professional carpet cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Set up a virtual appointment to discuss the scope of work. Conducting the consultation over video conference or phone call will ensure that you remain within the CDC's social distancing guidelines

Start by messaging a professional steam cleaner or carpet cleaner near you, and ask them if they would be willing to talk by phone or video call. Be sure to ask them how they handle payments and what precautions they have in place to keep you and your household safe.

How can I find out if a professional carpet cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Local and federal governments are currently in the process of defining essential services guidelines, and it’s best to read them to see whether professional carpet cleaning or steam cleaning is considered essential. A good place to start is with your city or state’s government website.

The CISA's Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage identifies 16 critical infrastructure sectors on a federal level. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for professional carpet cleaning?

It’s common for professional carpet cleaners to accept digital payments such as Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay, Zelle, PayPal and others. The current COVID-19 pandemic is quickly encouraging other companies to digitally transform as well. Make sure the carpet cleaner you hire will accept a digital payment instead of cash or check, and come up with a strategy for complying with social distancing regulations.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a professional carpet cleaner or steam cleaner need to enter my home?

Because the majority of carpet cleaning and steam cleaning jobs take place in someone’s home, it’s likely that a professional carpet cleaner would need to enter your home.

When you contact carpet cleaners near you, ask if they will do a video call in place of a standard consultation. Send photos and other materials digitally. Practice safe social distancing at all times, and follow both local and CDC guidelines.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Reviews for Midtown general cleaning professionals
Thumbtack Customer
UPDATE - May 5, 2017: It pains me to have to provide an update to my previous review as, up until most recently, the crew has continued to do an exceptional job cleaning our house; especially in the bathrooms; tidying up, and just in general making it a wonderful place to come home to after ‘cleaning day’. Unfortunately the disappointment comes at the hand of the company’s owner who totally misses the mark in the area of the TRUE customer service and satisfaction she raves about. After a recent cleaning, I came home and noticed several “track” marks (some black) and hardened “spots” on our Berber carpet in every room upstairs that obviously hadn’t been there before. I immediately took pictures and provided them to the owner to make her aware. She responded, as expected, with concern and promptly made arrangements to come check it out for herself in person. It was then when she acknowledged that it appeared to be from the vacuum (which is brought by her crew), and tested a carpet cleaning product on the hardened spots. She suggested using her own steam cleaner to try to fix the damage. She returned the following week to do the steam cleaning herself, and while she was able to get a lot of the black markings off, she was not able to fix all the hardened spots or the tracks. Upon contacting her a few days later to find out what she had in mind for next steps, I was met with utter and complete disregard for customer service and outright lies. “Unfortunately I can not do anything else…..I spend 4 hours and I did it over and over…never said I will come to steam clean more than one time….” I then responded with a request to discuss a fair remedy, to which she responded venomously denying any and all responsibility whatsoever, after having admitted to the damage the week before. “I think you misunderstood me, this carpet was not damage by us… none of our cleaning supplies or our vacuum can’t cause this type of stains. … I did the steam cleaning to help you out but not because I was assuming the guilt…there is nothing else we can do for you….” Making that comment alone, deserves a negative rating in the area of customer service because, certainly as a professional providing a service, any reputable and reasonable company would still have attempted to make it right regardless of the situation, but more importantly it demonstrates her unwillingness to take responsibility for her mistakes and changing her story when she can't fix the problem. Not to mention, to subsequently insinuate that we made the marks ourselves and tried to blame her, is COMPLETELY unprofessional, and frankly so far from the truth given that I took the pictures and sent them to her immediately after they had been there to clean. This is not a trustworthy service provider and you should beware of hiring someone to work in your home that is dishonest and has no ethics. Original Review: Lorna and her team of trained professionals are just that...truly professional, don't cut corners and are extremely thorough both in the initial cleaning and each subsequent - but also efficient. Fair pricing and she brings her own supplies. Does not overbook her staff and has multiple teams but dedicates the same team to my house each time to gain consistency. Is punctual and sends a reminder the day before to confirm. If we're home they work around us and are conscientious of being quiet if we're on a call. Lorna herself is present during the first couple cleanings to ensure the job is done according to the clients' expectations. She takes much pride in her team and values her staff and her clients' satisfaction above all.
