My rating is "VERY GOOD". Does this fall between good & outstanding? Old tub, toilet, vinyl surround, & ceramic tile surround were pulled out of my very small bathroom. They installed new plumbing, backerboard & the an air jet tub. Not realizing that they are more difficult, I chose small tiles. Gary did a great job installing the tile. Job was held up while we found condo bldg. water shut off. Some unexpected problems occurred, which is expected in any remodel job. I will rate some parts of this job as "good," as some faucet parts were lost & faucet had to go out & pick out & buy a new faucet. As far as what could have been done better - closer supervision of a worker with some personal problems, but the overall RESPONSE to the problems was EXCELLENT. Mr. Wilkins stayed in touch throughout the job. Gary worked very late to get all the tile in, grouted, & cleaned. The whole job took one week. I am very happy with the results.

After receiving several quotes from various Architects and Designers via Thumbtack, I decided to go with Aleksei White Development and did not regret me decision. Mr. White not only provided the best price but was very patient and readily available to answer all my questions. The plans were delivered in a timely fashion and his professionalism speaks for itself. I would definitely recommend his services and also use him again in the future.

Gabriel, Cris and their crew were great to work with. They are eminently competent, professional and courteous. We had a big bathroom renovation project, and they helped us work through unexpected issues as they arose and solve problems we would have had no idea how to fix. We are extremely pleased with how the bathrooms turned out - even better than the vision we had in mind.

We were very happy to work with Sara, owner of Heritage Interiors. She truly came to the rescue with some great ideas and recommendations on our kitchen expansion/remodel. In the midst of our remodel, my husband and I decided we needed some professional guidance. Sara was super responsive, the same day I contacted her she came to review our space. She listened, took measurements, provided ideas and valuable insights and truly consulted with us. When asked to turn around paint and color scheme recommendations she did so within hours. She knew we had a deadline to meet given the construction schedule and she came to the rescue with some great color suggestions. We are now back on track and know that our dream kitchen will soon be a reality. We also know we will continue to collaborate with Sara on completing our overall kitchen/entartaining space. Her advice has truly been invaluable.

Keri is one of the best interior designers in the business! She is very talented, charismatic, and resourceful! I had a limited budget to redesign my living and dining room, she not only found me the best deals, but created a space for me that looks completely custom. I want to thank her for tirelessly working on my house!

Patt is a talented and highly creative designer. She has fabulous taste and has the most uncanny knack for finding and creating cool stuff! I always loved spending time in her office and seeing the treasures she'd accumulated over the years: sculptures, found art, sock-monkey assemblages, all in a beautifully composed space. I was blown away watching her create dozens of unique holiday cards for her friends: such concern for detail! Her graphic design work integrates her funky and uniquely creative sensibility. Patt is 100% professional, with a fun and original flair.

I am always happy to refer Kevyn Connelly!! I love having her in my home. She is a very talented artist!! She painted my foyer bath with a faux finish and a beautiful bird motif that she did freehand. She's done my entire dining room, and basement bathroom walls. She's refinished furniture and accessories for me including a french mirror. I currently have a list of projects that I am scheduling her to come back and do. She is always very timely. She left my home like she was never there—just more beautiful! I love her! She's become a friend. I can leave her alone in my home with no worries! She made sure I was completely satisfied before payment. You can’t go wrong with hiring Kevyn!

My experience with Mr. Lombardi was outstanding! He redid my kitchen and did it exactly as I wanted it, down to a beautiful island in the middle. He did this 13 years ago and I still love it to this day. He did an awesome job and was very good with all the details I wanted. He comes highly recommended!

Bushra met me at my house to discuss my renovation project. She spent time gathering details and asking questions. She got a contractor she uses to take measurements of my bathroom, and provide an estimate. Ultimately, I’ve decided to hold off on major projects for right now, but look forward to working with Bushra in the future.

Maurice replaced the leaking pipe we had in our bathroom, repaired the sheetrock and patched the popcorn ceiling for a surprisingly low price. There's nothing he can't do! He did a great job and we would definitely hire him again. Thumbtack should fix their distance matching because he lived on the other side of Atlanta and he still made the drive several times to complete the job. Very happy!

After moving from California to Illinois, we started working with Andrea to coordinate colors and furniture for our new home. Our project took several years to finish, phase after phase, and in spite of the complexity of the task, there was never a misstep and the end result was not only beautiful but very unlike any other project in town. The final result was exactly what we wanted, a bit of California in Illinois. We were so happy with the results in Chicago that when we decided on a complete remodel for a 30 year old vacation home in Oregon, we flew Andrea out to the house where she developed a master plan. The design work included gutting our kitchen, the renovation of all the bathrooms, wood floors and new paint colors throughout, as well as furniture selections and arrangement. Andrea is a good listener and one of the few designers that brings ideas, but does not impose her tastes on her clients.

Mr. Trimble was wonderful. He was very knowledgeable about what I wanted. He was quick with the plans, clear with the drawings and did not complain when I made many changes. I would not hesitate to recommend him, or call him again in the future.

I am a builder, found out designer I used for years is very sick, (he is an excellent designer). So went to Thumbtack to find new designer. Words cannot explain how upset I am with Mike. Lie after lie, broken promise after promise. Paid 35% upfront and it has been five weeks and still no plans. Hired another designer (while Mike said he was still working on mine) and the designer finished in 6 days! Even after the new designer finished, Mike was still working on mine. I gambled and hired a new designer without telling Mike because I knew he was not going to have it ready, and it was going to be another excuse and sure enough I was right. That is when I told him, I hired someone else. Mike had not delivered my plans in 5 weeks!! I don't believe he can do house plans, but all he had to do was tell me, he took my money and every week it was an excuse as to why my plans were not ready or why he was days late with showing me anything. I have texts from Mike telling me what dates my plans would be ready, I would text him 2 or 3 days after that date and he would give me an excuse and another date. I want my money back or I will contact BBB and take this to small claims court.

Tariq is extremely knowledgeable about architecture, design and construction. He was able to quickly access my space and offer some ideas I had never thought about. The design is complete and now we are very happy with our new living room and kitchen. I would definitely hire him again. He made dealing with the county so easy and brought ideas for the rest of the house. We will definitely hire him when we do those renovations.

I worked with Candi during my home renovation last year and I was very pleased with her. I had several rooms completed-kitchen, master bathroom, spare bathroom as well as painting the entire house. She worked within my budget to produce a wonderful home for me. I appreciated the excellent coordination she had with all of the areas of the home.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
