Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Tech Roof found and repaired the site of a leak that had appeared only during very heavy rainstorms. They inspected my entire roof on Friday and did the repair on Saturday. I have waited until after the heavy thunderstorms of this past week to rate Tech Roof to make certain their repair was successful. Very pleased.

RoofCrafters was excellent to work with. The staff is courteous and all work was completed timely. The job site was left in immaculate condition. There was no sign that anyone had been there other than the new roof. I would highly recommend this company for your roofing needs.

The work to our roof was then completed on time and to a high standard. Manny provided us with peace of mind by keeping us well informed of what maintenance was done and what to keep an eye on. Great work, we shall be using Tri County Roofing again for sure!

Antonio put together probably the most detailed proposals for a roof repair I've seen from a roofer. He suggested a metal roof as being best quality while costing only a little more money. He also replaced the subpar gutter system. His work looks great and I am happy to have found him. I now have a metal roof and will consider this option going forward for all my properties. I will definitely use him again.

Tri-County Roofing did an outstanding job with our roof. They were very professional and efficient. They showed great pride in their work and the quality of the job shows. Manny Martell was very knowledgeable about the products they install and utilize. The estimate that he quoted us is one of the reasons why we chose this company. The other reason was it is a veteran-owned company and we always try to support our fellow veterans. We would like thank Manny for his help in choosing the right color for our roof. We love the Pewter Gray it looks amazing with the color of the house. Manny also took the time to answer all my questions in a timely manner. We are very pleased with the work they completed on my residence. We would definitely recommend Tri-County Roofing to our friends and Neighbors. Thank you Manny and your crew for a job well done! Will and Pablo were great contractors to work with! After my initial contact through Thumbtack, they arrived within days for an on site estimate and same day quote! With so many roofing companies in the area, it became quite daunting to find a company that met my needs and budget. Thankfully I made the right decision and have a beautiful new roof at a great price in 2 days! This team is hardworking, experienced and professional. If you're looking for a hassle-free experience, give Will and Pablo a call.

I give Mitch Hoover and his crew five stars. There was a rough start to the day when a crew member of a supplier of materials caused an on site problem; within a short while Mitch was on the scene, had the manager of the supplier on the scene and the situation was resolved. The roof looks outstanding and everything was cleaned before the crew left. I recommend this company to anyone who needs roofing service. Prior to actually being able to get to the task, Mitch provided cover for a small leak so that no interior damage was done.

The service was outstanding. Had tried to work with four other companies none of them could provide the correct formatted estimates for the insurance. Monkey did, he was also able to answer questions and was very flexible in products and timing for the job. Will recommend monkey roofing to anyone who needs theirs replaced. Will return to them if need arises in the future.

Thank you so much to Your Exterior Pros. I live out of state and needed a company I could trust and not feel that I would be overcharged. Ms. Sandy and Ms. Krissy have been in contact with me every step of the way and it is very much appreciated. Also by being out of state, they made sure I had before and after pictures of the roof. Thanks so much!

Although I ultimately did not use RoofCrafters for my project, I applaud their representative who came to do the estimate. He's courteous, polite, and had an easily understood printout at the end of his inspection. I would recommend RoofCrafters being included in seeking estimates for roofing jobs. I had a telephone call from the representative as a follow up and also several e-mail follow ups. Give them an opportunity to bid on your project; your experience will be a positive one.

If I could give zero stars I would. One of the most frustrating excuse riddled experiences I have had. After my first review stating they had twice failed to turn up to quote a job, they responded and I agreed to give them a 3rd chance, and also asked for estimates on two other properties I owned. Again they did not show. Eventually, the dad texted me, apologised for his son and again insisted I give them a 4th chance. I finally got a quote. On inspection of the quote I saw he wanted to use 1/2 OSB to patch in 1" dimensional lumber. He also told me he would not warranty the job unless he was allowed to put shingles on a flat roof surface above the hidden gutters in my soffits. After questioned this I was told he wanted to add slope to the soffits, although this would not have given anywhere enough pitch to use shingles. I once again quizzed him and I got a pissy text asking "Sir. Do you own a business". Oddly enough I do. And I show when I say I will. It sounds like everyone else had a wonderful experience. I did not. It has been nothing other than a frustrating waste of my time. Oh! And I'm still waiting on the quote for the other two roofs.....
