We had a great experience with Bek. Our lock on our back door broke Friday night, and I put in a thumbtack request on Saturday morning. Bek got back to me very quickly with a quote and was able to repair our door and replace additional locks that same afternoon. If we ever need a locksmith in the future, we will be calling him again.

I discovered on Sunday that one of my door locks was not working. I got on a Thumbtack on Monday to request a quote. Zach responded to my request quickly. We arranged the appointment. He was able to come after hours to replace the lock. HIs price was reasonable. He explained what was needed and also took the time to offer suggestions for my other doors. I really appreciate his attention to detail and friendliness. I will use Zach again when I am ready to change the locks on my other doors. Thanks Zach!

Awesome job! Larry was friendly, professional and efficient. He even went to Lowes to pick up the extra track after he had found out we would need one for the door, and still completed the job the same afternoon. I think his price was reasonable and appreciate that it did not increase after the fact. Thanks, Larry!

Brian, Was awesome. I gave a very small window and he showed and delivered where nobody else could and he was the most affordable of all the other contractors who contacted me on Thumbtack who told me that they could not do under the time tight frame. Lookout Concepts is the same as big contractor company for low voltage installation. Highly recommend.

Cesar was called on a Friday to repair the threshold of my door to the garage which would not close because a metal piece under the door had come loose. Even though he had to finish a project that afternoon, he promised to come by that day! He kept us informed of his timetable and was willing to brave heavy Friday evening traffic. He realigned the threshold without having to remove the door from its' hinges. I will definitely call him again.

James did a great job installing an exterior door on the back of my garage that needed a little extra with the framing. We agreed on a price and he picked up the door and installed on the same day. Pretty straightforward. Price was reasonable for his quality work.

Mack was great! We had a door that was off track and a door handle broken. He came in the evening after working all day to address the issues. I told him we could do it another day but he was adamant to get it done. Mack was very nice and was able to fix the two issues and said if we had any other problems to call him. I will definitely call Mack again. Definitely a hard worker.

I set up and scheduled an appointment for installing a security door, but ended up unable to attend myself! Luckily my wife was able to be free that day and the gentleman that came by was lovely according to her. Eric, the contractor, showed her the available and compatible options at the Home Depot 2 turns away and also did some other door-work. We had doors that were too snug, a storm door that didn't have its catch-coil, and another door that didn't have a key when we bought the house. He made a quote only knowing of the security door and hardly budged from it. Such generosity truly is a blessing, and I'll definitely be passing his number on to friends and our real-estate agent. Good work done pleasantly!

Kobi did a great job putting up my patio furniture, a desk and chair. He was on time and a true professional. The next day he helped my friend set up a daybed and complicated glass/wood wall unit. He also works quickly and efficiently. He is coming back to put in my closet doors and a bed with drawers. This is the guy you want to use!

If I could give 10 stars I would. Mika came out earlier than expected, which was great. I appreciated him fitting me into schedule at such short notice. As soon as he got to my house he got straight to work and knew exactly what he was doing. Upon completion I checked everything and each door was locking properly with all hardware installed to perfection. I would highly recommend his services. Pricing was straight forward. He didn't try to get over on me with sudden price hikes upon arrival like some other companies. 10 star!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How does a locksmith open a locked door?

Locksmiths use specialized tools and techniques to open your door in the case of lockouts or lost keys. Trained locksmiths can pick your door lock with lock-picking tools such as a rake, a tension wrench, a half diamond or a hook. They may use a technique called bumping, which will work on pin tumbler locks, or as a last resort they may use a drill to remove your existing lock. The national average locksmith price ranges between $70 and $100. A locksmith can also replace your current lock system, re-key your locks if you have lost your keys, repair a broken lock, install a deadlock and more. Locksmiths not only help with front doors, they can help if you are locked out of your car, locked out of your mailbox, locked out of your shed … you name it. There may be an additional charge for emergency after-hours locksmith services. Check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have a deadbolt lock installed?

Installing a new deadbolt lock can improve your home security, especially if you think your current lock system has been compromised or there are unaccounted-for copies of your house keys in circulation. A professional locksmith can install a new deadbolt for you in a matter of hours. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Locksmith prices for installing deadbolts may be higher based on whether the professional provides the lock or you have it on hand, how many components the locking system includes, and how long the installation takes. The cost to purchase a lock yourself from a big-box store can range from approximately $70 to $225 or more, depending on quality and materials. Higher-security locks often take longer and therefore cost more to install.

How much does it cost to make a new key for a car?

Locksmiths’ prices for making new car keys can vary depending on the make of your car as well as the time of day and location. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100, but duplicating a key may cost as little as $30, while extraction a key stuck in the ignition, cutting a new key and programming the fob can cost much more.

You might need a new car key if you have lost your key, the key broke in the ignition, the key is bent or damaged, or you just want a duplicate in case of emergency. You can request a duplicate of a key you have on hand, or you can have a new key made or cut if you have lost your original car keys. If you need to replace lost keys, you’ll need to first provide proof that you are the owner of the car along with the vehicle identification number (VIN). If you’re just locked out of your car but don’t need a key made, a locksmith may charge $65 to get you back in. Locksmith car key services are often far more affordable than dealership prices for new keys.

How much does it cost for a car locksmith?

There are several reasons you may need a car locksmith. You may be locked out of your car (either with the keys inside or with no keys at all), you may have lost your car keys and need a new key, or you may want to make a duplicate car key. The national average locksmith price ranges from $70 to $100. Getting locked out of your car can be scary and overwhelming — especially if it’s cold and dark out. Fortunately, professional locksmiths provide round-the-clock assistance to help people in these circumstances.

Car lockouts are one of the main reasons people need a locksmith. Your locksmith’s price can depend on the type of car you have, the time of day (or night) it is, and where you are located. Locksmith pricing may be based on a flat rate, or pricing may be quoted to you after the locksmith determines the circumstances. For example, a flat rate for a car lockout could be $65 for standard vehicles. That price could be higher for after-hours or long-distance service, or service during extreme weather. If you have entirely lost your car keys, a locksmith can make you a new car key, but first they must verify that you are the owner of the car. Locksmiths can even program new car key fobs for you — often at a lower price than a dealership.
