Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to put in a door?

The average cost of installing a door ranges roughly between $90 and $750. This price will vary, however — which it’s important to get cost estimates from several exterior or interior door installation companies so you know how much your specific project will cost.

For example, the type of door you’re installing and its material will factor into the price. If you want to add side or transom windows, this could raise the price. Other factors include whether you’re installing a standard-size opening or a sliding door, and whether you need to replace an existing door.

How long does it take to replace a door and frame?

The amount of time it takes to replace a door and doorframe is likely to take several hours and less than one day. The old door frame must come out, trim must be removed, and the rough opening may have to be adjusted in size to accommodate the new door. Factors that increase the time needed include larger doors, side or transom windows, damage or rot and installing a door without a provided frame.

Is it difficult to install a door?

Installing a door is by no means trivial, but it is doable with the right tools, skills and preparation. The easiest scenario is a door replacement with a new door with dimensions that are identical to the one being replaced. Pre-hung doors are relatively easy to install.

But if you’re familiar with this process, don’t hesitate to hire a pro instead.

Who can install doors?

Many contractors are typically able to install doors. Another type of pro you can contact is a handyman. Handymen are usually capable of performing most construction-related tasks, though they may need certain credentials if they perform structural work. A carpenter may also be able to install your new doors, as well as companies that specialize in door installation.

Search for either interior or exterior door installation services near you to find the right pro.

How long does it take to install a door?

A door typically takes a few hours or within a day to install, depending on its complexity and the company that's installing it. It also depends on the type of door, the number of installers and prep work needed. When you’re contacting interior and exterior door installation companies, ask them how long they expect your installation will take.

I needed a double door installed into the exterior of my home and it wasn't a task I felt comfortable with, nor had the tools to do myself. Curtis can to my home a few weeks before the job (we were getting concrete installed first) and he looked over the site and gave me some general information as to what it would take to complete the project. We then communicated via email to discuss timing and additional matters that needed to be addressed. Curtis coordinated with another vendor to come out on the day of the install to complete the difficult task of cutting a huge hole in the side of our stone facade home where the door was to be installed. Curtis arrived early with and worked with this team to ensure the cut was done right. He then spent the remainder of the day on the installation of the door, installing all the necessary steel framing and even adding masonry work where it was needed to finish off the area. He came with all the needed equipment and by the end of the day our beautiful new door was installed. Curtis and his team cleaned up the job site and ensured one last time that everything was in perfect working condition. My wife and I were amazed at the transformation this addition brought to our home and couldn't be happier with the work Intown Door Services did. They were professional, polite and did an amazing job. Highly recommended.

I hate having to write this because John is a nice guy, but this whole process has been extremely unorganized and the quality of the work has been very, very poor. The project was to replace a sliding glass door with black French doors. It started off with John texting me the day before the installation date to tell me the supplier didn't have my doors in stock, so I had to pick something else... ok, so I did. He said he needed to paint the doors I picked, so that would delay the installation date. We rescheduled for Tuesday of the following week. He never gave me a time he'd be here, and I didn't hear from him all week. On Tuesday, I had to text him to find out when I should expect him. When he got back to me, he said he'd be here later in the afternoon, pending weather. (It was supposed to rain, and since they're exterior doors, I totally understood wanting to reschedule.) We rescheduled for a couple days later, that Thursday, between 10-11am. Thursday, 11am rolls around, no sign of him. 11:15, he texts me that he's on his way, and he'll be here in a half hour... 12:15, he texts me that he needed to stop at Lowe's and he'll be at my place in 15 minutes... he finally arrived around 1pm. He started the installation, and the doors he installed were poorly painted with very obvious brush strokes all over them. He also needed to take the grids off to paint them. The grids were held in place with glue, so when he put them back on, there was bright white glue all over them, the windows and the edges. I was kinda freaking out when I saw the doors, but as he was finishing up for the day, he said he'd be back to clean them up, so I figured maybe they'd look better after they were "cleaned up." He said he'd be here the next day at 9am. 9am... he's not here. I finally get a text at 10:30 that he'll be here in 5 minutes. When he arrived, he calls me over to point out the glue that's all over the place and tells me he can't remove all of it, but he can paint over it. Ehhhh... between the brush strokes and the painted over glue, the doors look super sloppy. When he was done for the day, he said he'll contact me later that night to schedule to finish over the weekend. He didn't contact me that night or all weekend... shocker. I text him on Monday morning, and he said he'd be here Tuesday in the afternoon and offered a discount because of the delay... here we are, Tuesday in the afternoon... nothing... and the pictures attached to this are what I'm currently left with. While I appreciate the discount for the "delay," between that, the lack of communication and the awful quality of the doors, I don't think this job is even worth the amount I put down for the deposit.
