We hired Chef Ed Kuoha for a private catering event in Kapolei on 12/30. The menu included assorted sushi/nigiri (Ed brought along a sushi chef), maui french onion soup, salmon, ribeye steak, awesome side dishes and a delicious dessert (fondue - the kids loved it). He brings it all - including way nicer dishes vs what the condo had as well as serving pieces. If you're looking to do a special event/in home catering - Kuoha Culinary should be checked out. We tweaked the menu until everyone was satisfied and then Ed exceeded expectations on all counts. It was a great time. And the place was spot clean when they left (actually cleaner than when they arrived). Thanks Ed.

Aloha, My few interactions with Kimo of Akamai Catering were very positive as was our 1st meeting in person when he brought the "Menu Tasting" items to our home in Wilhelmina Rise. He had to travel from the North Shore so I appreciated his timeliness. The food was delicious and presented in an appetizer manner. He brought more than enough for 4 of us to taste. The Crusted mahi mahi with the Lilikoi drizzle was excellent, not fishy, the warmth baked in just right. The okinawan sweet potatoes were moist not dry and just the right consistency, the shoyu chicken was sweet but not overly so and very flavorful with the jasmine rice, the home baked Taro rolls were "ono" and the zucchini lasagna was "yum" with just the right amount of onions, tomatoes, and eggplant for a nice vegetarian entree. The marble cake to end the meal was slightly warm, topped with a cream cheese icing and fresh strawberries which ended the meal with a "star". We look forward to meeting Kimo again at Bellows AFS to discuss the final plans for the wedding reception which will be held there in January 2016. Kimo was very accommodating, cordial, outgoing and entertaining. His cooking was superb and we look forward to continuing to work with him. We would recommend Hanai Events for any event you could image. We planned this surprise party for our sister from Texas 3wks before we where to be in O'ahu. They found th venue,(Hyatt Centric Hotel) got the food we loved catered,suprised us with a BREAK DANCING CREW, had a screen for the slide show my hubby made, had the most AWESOME DJ(played 80's music and kept everyone on their feet) and the 3 different flavored CHEESECAKES... out of this world Fab!!!! I could continue on about our night and all the memories that Hanai Events created for the Birthday Girl, her childhood friends, colleges, kids,family and staff enjoyed themselves. If you are looking for the best event and memories of a lifetime definitely have HANAI EVENTS as your planners. Jeremy and Ethan much mahalos for all you guys did before our event and after. I cannot say enough great things about Chef Pedro, the food was outstanding, they were so accommodating, very friendly and professional. The coordinator leading up to our event was so helpful and kind and the staff the day of was wonderful, warm and professional. Everyone was raving about the food! We were on a budget, but really good in-season food was important to us and Chef Pedro made that happen for us at a reasonable rate. The day of the event there was a glitch with the tables/chairs, and without missing a beat Chef Pedro’s stepped in to help resolve that issue without ever worrying us. While one might consider a caterer/Chef to only deal with food, they had their hand in nearly all aspects of the day and worked in perfect harmony with the venue care taker. They just have an ALL STAR staff combine with ALL STAR food. Everything was just wonderful. I would highly recommend them!

After 2 weeks of finally getting someone to email me the catering menu, everything after that went pretty smooth.( I think the hosting staff never sent the requests thru to the right person but after I did get it, it was very professionally done). Ordering was easy, we had 3 entrees, 1 pasta and a few appetizers for a holiday staff luncheon. Our favorite ended up being the tilapia. Order was ready when they said I could pick up. Parking is horrendous though and RT needs a "loading zone! in front to help out with take out and catering. However the crew helped me load it into my car as I double parked out front and the food was quite delicious. Our staff were very happy and we would definitely order from RT Monalua again! Mahalo Nui Loa!

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
