Noble Plumbing beat my insurance company to the job and matched their rates for repair. After our pipes burst this winter, Noble Plumbing came and repaired the broken pipe before my insurance could call us back. Since it was after 5, under my insurance we would've waited up to a day for service, but Noble plumbing was there immediately. They were responsive, compassionate, fast, affordable, and even gave us tips to keep the pipes from re-freezing.

Great job by Steve! He's obviously the kind of guy who isn't satisfied until the job is done right. He went the extra mile to hose out all of the gutters on my two story home and test the downspouts. For the amount of time he spent doing the work correctly, he's very price competitive. Highly recommended.

We contacted Jeremy on a Wednesday and he came out the next day to see what we needed. His dad Steve and brother Matt did the install the following Saturday (very short notice) but they came through. Everyone we met was very professional and friendly, not to mention hard working. Due the plumbing problems from the initial build of this house it was necessary to reroute the delivery pipes into the wall, these guys were here almost 10 hours getting the new tub installed. We felt bad about that but they got it done and Matt came back on Sunday to pick up the old tub. We are very impressed with their work ethics and are passing this company on to other friends. We highly recommend this company. Thanks guys.

I used Mac for plumbing repairs to a toilet. I purchased the supplies ahead of time. Mac replaced all of the toilet guts. He also put up a new towel bar and toilet paper holder. He was there when he said he would be. He had good attention to small details on both projects. I plan to use him in the future for other small projects.

I could not be more pleased with the garden clean up and mulching that Brightlite Construction did for me today. Richard was responsive to my requests and added fresh ideas himself. We started the process a week ago and it was finished today. I would highly recommend his business.

Adam was very prompt and completed our plumbing issue where another plumber could not resolve it. We now have hot water to our double sink vanity in master bathroom. Adam also removed a door in our master closet. Would highly recommend using Adam.

I had what seemed to be a mysterious leak causing two large wet spots in front of the vanity on the wall to wall carpet in my small hall bathroom. I called a local plumbing company whose yellow trucks are seen all over town, to assess the problem and fix it. It took.two days before they were able to come out. The two "plumbers" examined the wet carpet for 45 minutes but couldn't find the source of the wetness. Oddly, they refused to pull the carpet back because they said it was not their company's policy to pick up carpet. They left charging me their fee for coming out with no suggestions or solutions to the mysterious spots. Through Thumtack, as a first time user, Dean replied immediately to my request and was able to come out the next day. With the assistance of his very competent helper, Dean immediately identified the source of the leak at the base of the toilet, saying it needed a new seal. He went over to Lowe's and purchased the parts and the job was completed in a very short time. I asked him to pick up the carpet and with an easy straight cut across the carpet at the doorway, I was able to dispose of the wet carpet so the pad can air out to avoid any further mold build up. I'll call upon Dean again to help me have tile laid down to replace the carpet. It is incredible to me that a large plumbing company in the Des Moines Area with their name suggesting high morals could not identify this very common and simple plumbing problem, leaving me, their customer, perplexed and stressed about who to turn to if a plumbing company couldn't figure solve the problem. Thanks Dean for solving what was really not such a big mystery after all-for you!

Nick did a fabulous job installing several faucets at a very reasonable price. I was most impressed with the turnaround time from request to completion. Two other plumbers we contacted didn't even return our calls.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
