Bob was great! He was timely and able to come out right away. He was very professional and explained why my new wireless thermostat needed a separate module with the wiring I had for my furnace. This would have taken me many hours and lots of frustration and I wouldn't have been able to install it myself in the end.

Sam is a great guy and knows what he is doing. I would hire him again anytime!. We started with a dryer vent clean up and ended up also doing tune up for furnaces at a very reasonable price, he even helped in changing the humidifier filters. Thank you

I appreciated the detail he provided for the installation of the ecobee4 smart thermostat. I also appreciated the advice he provided for further maintenance on my furnace. I regret the vacuuming of the vents. If I would have known that a regular vacuum was used, I would've done it myself and saved myself $65. Definitely not his fault. He is very good and thorough.

We just purchased a new home and we really needed to clean our ducts.. Stan came to our house right on time, from the very beginning we liked him.. he was very professional and nice. When he finished the job we also asked him to leave us an estimate on new furnace and price that he gave us was very good, so we ended up also buying a new furnace. Furnace was installed next day! Artur(installer) was also very professional he did a great job! He cleaned everything after installation and took all the garbage with him.. thank you Green Air

I was very happy with my Thumbtack referral experience in finding Michael Gonzales. He was very prompt in responding to my quote request, answered ALL my online questions and came within 2 days. He was polite, reasonably priced, no hidden charges, and no hard sell to replace furnace. Installed part as quoted. I would recommend him. As a widow of a General Contractor who no longer has any good sub contractor connections for services anymore, I would say Casa Heating & Cooling is a good fit for someone looking for good service and honest fair pricing! Thanks again Michael for restoring my air-con during this sweltering heatwave!

After receiving multiple quotes on a new furnace and a/c, Bobby, was by far the best quote ( about 40% less than most) . Not only did he show up when he said he would, he worked around the clock to ensure we would have heat before the temperatures dropped that evening. His work ethic is outstanding. He kept us informed about what he was doing throughout the process, made sure everything was up and running, before he left, and even contacted us a week later to make sure we had no issues or concerns. I was so pleased with his service, I recommended him to friends. Each one sang his praises and said they would call on him again if needed, and recommend him as well.

Paul from STVU set up an initial meeting with me with his technicians and they explained the work that would be necessary after inspecting and determining the root cause of my Air Conditioning problem. I opted to purchase a new furnace through them because mine was really old. I feel the quality of product I chose was good for my property and the work that they performed was excellent. Previous work completed created an issue and Igor was able to find out what the problem was after just a short period and my AC has been running perfectly since! I absolutely encourage anyone looking for HVAC service to contact STVU and set up an appointment to see what they can do for you. Highly recommended!!!!

We were having foundation cracks repaired and interior drain tile installed. This required the furnace to be removed, then reinstalled once the work was complete. Tim was very flexible with scheduling to help minimize downtime. While reinstalling the furnace Tim also fixed a few minor issues with the system and provided recommendations to help everything run smoothly and efficiently.

Great HVAC troubleshooting to root out the cause of my AC issues

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
