Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

How do I prepare for a house cleaner?

There are several things you can do in preparation for a house cleaning to improve the efficiency and quality of the job. If you’re unfamiliar with a cleaning service, hiding and locking away any obvious valuables lying around can offer great peace of mind.

Depending on the preference of the cleaner, you may need to lock up your pets before the cleaners arrive. Washing dishes and decluttering the house allows a house cleaner to do their job more effectively. And leaving special notes for the cleaners about certain areas in your home that need attention is also helpful.

Ask house cleaners near you about their tips to help you prepare for their services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

How often should you have your house cleaned?

The frequency you should have your house cleaned depends on several factors, and the best professional house cleaner can give you a rough estimate of costs so you can budget how often you need someone to clean your home.

Daily house cleaning may be necessary if you have a home with a large number of bedrooms with young children and kids, although other homeowners may benefit from weekly house cleaning. A weekly cleaner can clean the bathroom, kitchen, do laundry, vacuum and mop. An occasional deep house cleaning is most beneficial for people who have recently renovated a home or are looking to do a spring clean.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

Justina does a great job! Our house is visibly clean and smells clean after she visits. Seems like that should be obvious, but it wasn’t the case with 2 previous companies we used. Justina is flexible to work with but most importantly she is very detailed and thorough when cleaning our house. I highly recommend her!

Melissa and her company have no Real concept of how to clean. I explained and sent her 10 pictures of areas that needed a Deep Cleaning. She gave me a price and agreed to do a deep cleaning. She was not able to clean my house, nor do a deep cleaning. She knows how to do dusting, but not how to clean. They will not rub any area to get a floor, nor baseboard, nor wall, nor fan blade clean. Not a good service nor competent company. Pass them by.

I've had this company clean three times in the last two months and I'm very happy with the personnel (trustworthy and kind) and their cleaning abilities (very thorough). They come prepared with all of the equipment and supplies. I have special cleaning requests for different areas of my house and they are very accommodating. As soon as we work out a few more details, I'm confident to change my overall rating from Good to Outstanding.

After 3 workers spent 2.5 hours cleaning, very little was accomplished, and what was done had to be re-done. My wife and I spent hours re-cleaning everything. The 3 cleaners were very nice people, but they have not been trained on how to clean thoroughly. The manager agreed to use our non-toxic cleaning products, and then afterward blamed the poor cleaning on our products (which worked fine for us), then later said it was rude to have asked them to use our products. They broke our vacuum, but didn't think to try using the vacuum they brought with them after ours broke. One worker said the side of the fridge wouldn't come clean. I took the sponge she had used and showed her that with just water I was able to scrub it clean. This is the general approach to cleaning that seems to have been taken: "I ran a rag over it, so it's suitably cleaned." Cleaners need to have the judgement to recognize when something is not clean and know how to get it clean. That is fundamentally what a professional cleaner does. The owner/manager offered a discount on the spot, but I wasn't able to discuss the issue at the time since we had professional photographers coming and I had to jump into cleaning mode. When I reached out to let her know that I had submitted a complaint to Thumbtack with a counter offer for the work done, she threatened to call the police, threatened a lawyer, said I was unchristian, warned me about karma, and so forth. While I appreciated that they were able to get 3 cleaners to my house with very short notice, we agreed to a professional quality cleaning which we did not receive. I sought and am currently awaiting mediated arbitration through thumbtack.

Amanda was hired based on her bio. I was very specific on needing a DEEP CLEANING. The day of the cleaning Amanda was 15 minutes late. She had to come back the next day to finish things that were not completed on day one. I needed my windows cleaned but was told she didn't do windows. Under furniture, items on my shelves, appliances, frig & top of microwave were not moved and wiped down until I asked twice the second day. Walls were not cleaned, baseboards were wiped, not scrubed like asked. I've never had someone take their wet socks off and walk bare foot throughout my house or use my ottoman/chair to reach high shelves. When doing our final inspection, I pointed out dirt on a wall I thought should have been cleaned. Amanda said she was here long enough and walked out. In spite of being disappointed, I hope Amanda learned from this experience in order to grow her business successfully.
