Hired to do a surprise 40th for my wife. Totally last minute. I am thankful Chef Rich came with his crew and ran the show. We hired him for a heavy appetizer and cocktail party. He handled everything. He had a large selection from various menus and allowed me to customize our night. I can't recommend him and his crew any stronger than to say his food was amazing. A serious chef here with a crew that knows how to handle a private party. They disappeared into the night leaving my house and kitchen looking like they were never there. I didn't lift a finger. Except to eat, drink, and be merry. I'm hiring him again for any event we do.

We worked with Allen for everything, we recently moved to Texas but our wedding of 150 was in the Chicagoland area. He was great to work with, extremely responsive and had great ideas for menu and serving options for us. We had a buffet appetizer and a BBQ buffet dinner, Allen even worked out a brisket carving station for us. We had rave reviews on all the food! His staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We worked out having 4 people who would man the buffets and our dessert table, clean off the tables, set up a coffee station and package all the food up for us at the end. It went so smoothly we couldn't be happier with the service and hospitality! Would definitely recommend them for any event!!

Wonderful service; Joseph was on time, professional, and food was served right away. And the food was AWESOME. Delicious homemade sausage, unique and tasty mostaccioli, and the dessert salad was outstanding, just to name a few of the great dishes. Got rave reviews from all of the guests at my wedding rehearsal dinner. Highly recommend!

Overall, I was very pleased with everything. Food was good, display was good and had a good experience working with Loretta. I wanted white servewear instead of clear and she was able to accommodate. I would say that the food dishes were much better than the dessert (cupcakes). Some of the bites were also smaller than I expected. That said, no complaints...would use Loretta again in the future!

David is fabulous! We spent time planning the menu in the month or so before our dinner party, and it was delicious! He and his assistant Joey, showed up right on time. Joey helped me tweak final touches (he is also an event planner!). The menu could not have been more perfect from the amazing appetizers down to the scrumptious chocolate lava cake! Run to David for your next event!

Chef Karen prepared a delicious meal for myself and my friends to celebrate my birthday. Her menu options were plentiful. She catered to my vegan friends and kept us carnivores happy too. The food tasted delicious. Her prices were affordable and fair. She was very responsive to my emails, calls, and texts. Her casserole and soup dinnerware were beautiful. Dinner service was slower than I expected because she arrived later than she planned.

Hiring Gracious was such a great and last minute decision! Clarissa made it less stressful by being professional and accommodating. I was in awe when I saw the final presentation. The appetizers and the entire spread looked beautiful and fancy. It was also delicious, and I received so many compliments from guests! For such high quality food, it was reasonably priced. I highly recommend Gracious and would hire them again for future events!

We had an amazing holiday party with all of our friends and family over this December. Carol brought the "wow!" with her artful presentation and delicious appetizers, entrees AND desserts! Our guests still talk about how much they loved all of the food. Carol and her team had such professionalism and took care of everything from prep, setup and cleanup. Thanks Carol! We hope to use you again soon for our daughter's wedding shower this Spring!

Kristin is the best caterer! We connected about 3 weeks before my Housewarming party for 40 guests. Not only was she able to hire a bartender and server, she also supplied a bartender table! She worked with me to make an absolutely delicious meal (Southern/Cajun) and her signature charcuterie board is a true show-stopper! If I could give more than 5 stars I would! Will definitely plan to use her for all my catering needs.

When planning a party it's very difficult to find the perfect combination of professionalism and culinary expertise. I found both in hiring Chez Mikey. My guests and I were so impressed with Chef Mike's preparation of our appetizers and main entré. We began our dinner with a one bite amuse bouchée, marinated carrots and cucumber caviar tray. Beautiful and very delicious. For the entré we had the "Hunters' Trophy" (lamb chop on top of polenta and a slowly cooked chicken thigh). This combination was presented artfully; and more importantly this dish was so tasty that even the guests with whom lamb chops are not thier favorite protein, found the lamb chop tender and cooked to perfection and loved it. Chef Mike ended the meal with a special chocolate ganache celebration cake which left all my guests happily ending on a sweet note. When I have another event, I'm speed dialing Chez Mikey because he will soon be booked up. Chef Mike and Sous Chef Diana are top notch in making a party scrumptious and elegant without the worry.

We used Feast & Imbibe for an 85 person buffet dinner/BBQ. The passed appetizers and dinner were excellent. They were very easy to work with and flexible in integrating with our other arrangements for the evening. We will definitely consider them for other events that we host.

Heidi was very easy to work with, and very attentive to staying in touch. She helped figure out what would be a good menu, and the guests enjoyed the food. I would suggest that as you do more events, you should invest in nicer serving pieces. Good luck, Heidi!

Rebecca and her partner showed up on time and ready to work. I planned an Italian surprise birthday party for my sister, and they hit it out of the park. The appetizers were awesome, and Rebecca created a custom meal for us. She made scratch made pasta with meatballs that was very authentic. We also had chicken parmesean which was delicious as well. My only compliant was that we were so full by the time we had our chicken! I highly suggest using Rebecca for any of your personal catering needs. It was such a special night for our family. We will be using them again.

Jessica and her team recently catered a to-day event for our team and knocked it out of the park! From the timeliness of the delivery to the quality of the food, everything was fantastic! The taco-bar on day 1 was a huge hit! They made sure we had nice utensils and nameplates for all of the ingredients so everyone knew what they were having and if allergens would be an issue. Thank you for your thoughtfulness, attention to detail, and delicious catering!

I really never write reviews, but Alvin Yu and his team were amazing! Our guests really raved about all the food. (I need to get his recipe for the Asiago Crusted Chicken Breast - so tender!). And his servers and sous chefs really made the event. Their attention to detail and lovely personalities really made the atmosphere. They were so helpful beyond what I could have even asked for. We had 2 passed appetizers, then salad, 4 entrees and 3 sides served family style for 44 guests and everything was delicious and well timed. Alvin totally understood what I wanted and was able to seamlessly accommodate special dietary needs. He was very responsive to all my questions throughout the planning process and seriously made the event really so easy on me! And they really made our guests of honor feel very special, too. They really go above and beyond. A huge thank you to Fyusion Dining for making our event such a success!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
