Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it cost to stain a deck?

On average, it costs $674 to stain a deck. Expect to pay between 50 cents and $2.50 per square foot for re-staining. Cost factors include the square footage of the deck, the amount of sanding required to prepare it for staining, any repairs that need to be done, the type of stain used and more.

To find out exactly how much it will take to stain your deck, contact several local deck staining professionals and ask for free cost estimates.

Is it better to paint or stain a deck?

There are advantages to both painting and staining your deck. Paint gives you more variety of colors and lets you choose between bright and vibrant or muted and classic. Paint also lasts longer than stain and is much easier to maintain.

The stain has its own set of advantages as well. It’s more natural-looking and friendlier on the wallet. It also brings out the grain of the wood in your deck in a very striking way. Plus, it’s also easier to apply and can be painted over.

Who do I hire to get my deck stained?

You should hire a deck staining professional, company, painter or contractor. Although there are many contractors willing to stain decks — from the deck contractors themselves to painters, handymen and beyond — search online (or through an app like Thumbtack) so you can quickly see the top-rated professionals in your area and read their reviews. Whoever you decide to go with, make sure you also look at photos of stained decks they’ve worked on so you can gauge their quality of work.

What are the advantages of staining a deck?

Staining a deck comes with a number of advantages, including:

  • It prevents rotting by sealing out moisture, fungus, termites and other agents of decay, making it last longer.
  • It saves it from wear and tear due to solar radiation.
  • Staining your deck protects it against heavy foot traffic — an especially important consideration in areas that are common walking routes or that see lots of scooting chairs.
  • Stain preserves the appearance and natural beauty of wood, bringing out the grain and keeping it colorful and bright through the years.

What are some common types of stains for decks?

There are several main categories of deck stain. The first is clear stains, which are essentially there to seal out water and preserve the wood without adding color to the deck. These can bring out the beauty in your grain, however. The next type (and a popular option) is a semi-transparent stain. They impart some color into the wood for aesthetic purposes. Finally, solid stains coat your deck’s surface like paint. This is the best option if you want to hide imperfections. Talk to a deck staining contractor today to discuss other stain options.

How do you prepare a deck for staining?

Preparing a deck for staining requires having the right equipment for the job, as well as being able to spot problem areas. If you do not own the right equipment or do not have sufficient experience to spot potential problems, it’s better to leave this job to a pro (like a professional pressure washing service).

Make sure you do any preparation, from pressure washing to scrubbing to sanding and repairing, when there is no rain in the forecast. At the very minimum, use a broom and/or a leaf blower to clear your deck of dust and debris.

How do you remove paint from a deck before staining?

Removing paint from a deck in preparation for staining is an important task, as any paint left on the surface will block the stain from soaking into the wood. This will render the stain ineffective and lead to a poor aesthetic appearance. This is why the job is best left to pros who have the tools and experience to remove paint without damaging the deck itself.

This job requires tools like a pressure washer, grinder, chemical strippers and more. It also requires knowing how to use them skillfully. Contact professional deck staining contractors and companies to see if they can also remove paint from your deck.

How long should you let a deck dry before staining?

It’ll likely take at least 24 hours for your deck to dry after pressure washing it. Wood is naturally absorptive, so you’ll want to make sure it’s dry before a professional applies the stain.

He stained our three level deck in the back of our condo building and did a great job. The deck looks brand new and was way overdue to be restrained and sealed.

Katie and Brian painted our master bedroom and stained our deck. I was worried that staining our deck would be a two day job but they did everything in 7 hours. Everything looks great! We have more projects to complete and I will certainly request their services again. We paid with a credit card and I'm sorry we didn't have cash on hand to tip them because they certainly deserve it.

We had two decks power washed and stained by Kosterna Construction. They were able to do the job right away and for a good price. The decks look great and the hard-working team was great about moving heavy flower boxes and furniture. They even threw in a wash and stain for a big wooden flower box on our roof deck. The only reason I can't give a perfect rating is that they did not always arrive at the time we had arranged. It was not a problem for me as my schedule is flexible, but other Thumbtack users may want to be aware of this.

Carlos did a terrific job sanding and staining my deck. He accommodated my schedule, arrived exactly when he said he would and finished the job on schedule. I will happily recommend him and would hire him again.

Overall, the experience was good. Carlos accommodated my reschedules a couple of times. CHV powerwashed and stained my rooftop deck. They also built out a railing. The only thing i would say needs improvement is that I wished Carlos came back after the deck was dry to touchup some small things without me asking him to do so. Upon calling he was responsive and came the next day.

We hired Chris to complete a multi-deck staining job for our condo building. He was courteous, generally communicated timely, and the finished work was well done. He also was kind enough to pressure wash certain parts of our concrete, shore up deck joists, and re-screw in boards where nails popped out over time. We would definitely consider using Chris again and appreciate his help on the project. Thanks Chris!

Brad Lanaville at Lanaville Contracting is a thorough professional. Even during the estimate, he walked me through a detailed step-by-step process of how he was going to strip and stain my weathered deck. I felt comfortable with his methods and pricing, so we went forward. Brad started quickly thereafter and kept me in the loop on a daily basis about the progress of the deck. His timeframe was reasonable and the end result was stunningly beautiful. He even smoothed out some of the wood slats so that it would be smooth to the touch. And even washed my windows! Brad thinks of everything and is a very thoughtful, kind man who knows what he's doing. Don't hesitate to use Lanaville Contracting for your decking needs.

Chris did a great job for me. Very professional and very high work quality. I hired him to do some outside deck repair and staining, as well as some interior plumbing and repair work. He took care of all of the jobs quickly, at a high quality of service, and at a very fair price. Next time I have any repair work around my house, Chris will be the first person I call. I would highly recommend.
