The Rent A Vet mover team led by Frank was prompt, arriving 15 mins early. They worked quickly but carefully, wrapping the large items for safe transport. Upon arriving at the new home, there were some challenges getting certain large pieces into certain rooms, but the team did what they needed to do to make it happen without damaging anything. We were under a serious time constraint with rain in the forecast plus needing to be out of our old house by 5:00PM, and Frank's team made it happen. I highly recommend using their services for your move, large or small. You won't find a better value.

I hired Cartan to move a few pieces of furniture into our 3rd floor walk up apartment. It was a challenge to fit these items through the door and I thought we'd have to have them hoisted over our balcony. Cartan said he could do that, but was sure to exhaust all other possibilities before resorting to this measure. Sure enough, he and his associate found a way to get these items through the door and did so without damaging anything in the process. The entire time they were both very positive, efficient, and professional and I appreciated their service.

I highly recommend Easy Moving. They were very easy to work with and were very accommodating in working with my schedule and budget. Anthony and his team were very professional and were able to move everything very quickly and carefully. I was moving out of the second floor apartment and they maneuvered a three section couch down an narrow hallway without a hitch.... not so much as a bump or scratch. I would use Easy Moving again and I would also refer them to anyone else looking for moving services.

Josh was very punctual. He reached us before arrival and provided approximate time to complete. All works were done with great pride and professionalism. Josh also volunteered to hal out an old garbage disposal for us. The job was quick and we had the new unit up and running with no time. Thanks again for your work and dedications. We will definitely call again for the services that Josh could offer.

Movers were punctual, even early. I hired them to move furniture to a different floor in the house. Sounds easy, but it was two really bulky, heavy pieces through a narrow hall. They were very careful and moved them without a touch to the wall! The two men were kind and polite. I will be moving in a few months as my husband is now infirm. We have lived here for 25 years and have a lot of stuff. I will be using them for the move especially since I found out they will provide a dumpster and can provide junk hauling service as well. BTW, they were very reasonably priced too! I am so grateful when I can find good professionals at reasonable prices! Thanks guys!

I was having guest in from out of town because of a death in the family. I really needed someone in a pinch and was already overwhelmed with everything going on. The staff from Clean Queens were very polite and professional from our initial phone contact all the way to the in person greeting, doing the job and departure. I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I do not believe that my house has been any cleaner. They did an amazing job. I will definitely use their services again.

I first hired Full Service Moving on a lark. I had bought an antique bedroom set off of Facebook market, and I needed experienced movers stat. Ryan was incredibly responsive, and he and Otis knew exactly how to handle the furniture. I was so impressed with them that when they mentioned that they did longer-haul, full-house moves, we cancelled our appointment with Mayflower, and hired Full Service Movering. They moved my entire house in Southern Illinois to STL in one day. The truck was masterfully packed. Nothing got broken. The team remained consistently upbeat, and they never dogged it. I have had some really terrible movers in my time, and I have had some adequate. I really like Ryan, Otis, and their team. Also, they were really communicative. A great experience. I would use them again, and I strongly recommend their services.

I had a very good experience with One World. I previously used their services in 2012, so I sort of knew what to expect. It was the same great experience with clear communication; a great team of workers, and I felt I got a decent price as well. The entire team from the office, to the driver and movers were upbeat and kind. I not only would highly recommend them but was delighted to hear that they also do nationwide moves! Such a relief, I will certainly be calling again when they’re needed.

We were scheduled for a move with another mover who backed out on us during the busiest month. We were scheduled to go from Missouri to New York. Rose answered our Thumbtack request and helped within hours, by the next morning next morning we had everything finalized. We booked within 24 hours had a full pack move and 3 days later we had peace of mind within 5 days from day of being packed the truck arrived. The crew came out to pack us and I was very worried that something would go wrong. The foreman Mario was beyond wonderful with the 5 other guys. We were fully packed loaded in two days. (it was a long two days but it was done). Our estimate was just about 98% on. Mimi called to set our delivery schedule and Rose kept us updated through out the 5 days on where the truck was, when to expect them to arrive in Upstate New York. Our move was about 1300 miles and I have to say, it is not every day a company returns calls at 11:00 pm at night when you realize a tractor trailer will not be able to access the street to deliver. Rose called us back within 15 minutes and said she would make sure it was taken care of before delivery at 10:am in the morning. We had 17,000 pounds plus moved and NOT one item damaged. If anyone has questions message me. My husband is a Attorney with nothing but praise. Thank you all for a Happy Move!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
