My son Dan was failing math. We called Arbor because of a recommendation and they set us up with Ari (an excellent math tutor). Dan went up to a B. Then the next semester Dan went to an A. Arbor Tutors literally took my son from an F to an A.

Our family is so happy with the Math tutoring our child has received from Greg. Greg is highly professional, kind and interested in our child's progress. Her grade in her class has improved significantly and she is generally more relaxed with Math in general since working with Greg. We are thrilled that our child's confidence in Math class has improved significantly due the fact that Greg has her now "working ahead" a bit of what is presented in the classroom. It is great that she has exposure to some of the Math concepts with Greg before she sees them in class. In short, we are thrilled that we found Greg!

Bertina provided tutoring I both math and executive functioning for my middle school aged son who is autistic. With her help, he was able to institute a homework schedule he could stick to on his own, and we no longer had a battle every night. Bertina is kind, thoughtful and communicative, but is also able to hold ground with a disruptive kid.

Parent: When we needed a tutor for my son, Jeff was quick to respond and came over to help fast! He's always on time and the communication is perfect. As a parent I feel that Jeff understands perfectly what the need is and how to help. He gets to work right away and makes math easy to understand. My son really likes the way Jeff teaches him. He says he likes that Jeff doesn't do the problems for him but instead Jeff helps him out just enough so that he can figure out how to do problem by himself. Jeff is a dedicated tutor!

Ole Spanish tutoring is a wonderful experience. I have had many tutors in languages and he makes the experience interesting and fun. We learn a lot and have conversation and still get vocabulary. He also uses different teaching tools which I love. Also, he doesn't go too fast or too slow- he mixes it up. I always had tutors that went so slow and I didn't get enough from the class but this isn't the case with Cristobal. He is willing to answer questions and always makes you feel good about answering. He is very encouraging. Don't hesitate to take with him. He is very thorough and good at teaching Spanish. I recommend him 100% and still take Spanish with him now.

I was having a lot of problems with essay writing and math. The tutor that was given to me was able to help me with both subjects. I'm very relieved. I recommended Arbor to several of my family members who also had similar results.

My 8th grader and sophomore are both being tutored for Math and Mike has been a great help. Even after just a couple sessions I can see that my children are more confident in the subject. He's taught them to understand more in depth what they are being taught in school.

Amazing teacher!!! We can't say enough good things about Keerthi, our maths tutor! Not only did she single-handedly teach my daughter different techniques and shortcuts to solve problems , where she ended the year with a solid A, but she gave her the confidence that she could really solve any kind of hard problems .

For the love of teaching

I was so impressed with Kevin and couldn't be happier that he reached out on thumb tack. I was in search of a tutor to help me pass the Elementary Education Math Content Test (very similar to the ACT math). Not only was Kevin able to teach in student friendly terms, he was SO knowledgeable of the types of questions and concepts I would need to know. Kevin was always very punctual and approachable when ever I did not understand something. We were able to meet before tutoring began to create a plan that we would follow together. By the last session, we covered every topic in the amount of time I hoped for. If you're in need of any math tutoring, I would HIGHLY recommend Kevin. Hands down the absolute best tutor I have ever been in contact with!!

My son did not like being tutored. Mr. Stehlik is the tutor that my friend highly recommended. When I proposed to him to get tutoring from Mr. Stehlik for ACT, not surprisingly to get the answer-- immediately declined. I could not do anything until my son told me his practice ACT test scores-- his scores during practice had been in the range 33-34. At this point I forced him to go to see Mr. Stehlik. I pre-arranged with Val for a 6 lesson package but in case my son did not want to go further, he would only do one lesson. Nervously, I asked my son when he finished the 1st lesson, "do you feel helpful?" Surprisely, he answered "yes". "Would you like to continue for 5 more lessons?" My son said firmly "yes". The 6 tutoring lessons were done in a period of 3 weeks and then my son went for ACT test in school in April. He told me he did not feel well during test because of acute cold syndrome started in that test day morning. I then registered him again for June ACT test, thinking that he may need to repeat. Three weeks later, my son asked me, "do you think we can cancel the June ACT test and get the registration money back?" I became nervous: "what score you got?" "Composite 36", the voice came calmly and pleasantly. We highly recommend Mr. Stehlik for ACT tutoring. He is like an excellent carpenter, able to find a small hole and put the nail on the hole to make the whole piece perfect and firm!

After deciding to return to school, and complete my degree, the last class I had to take was a Technical Math class. Being years later, this class was no longer offered - I had to take it as an independent student, meaning I had no instructor, or class to show up to, only a syllabus and a Math book. A Math assistance area was available to students, and there I met the tutor I write of here. Of the 6 to 8 tutors available, I signed up with Dave as much as possible. The class I was taking dealt with Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry as well as an introduction to Calculus. I could barely remember how to factor a problem, but working with Dave, he spent the time to help me get through the basics, and had the patience to answer many of my off the wall questions, and many that I thought were unrelated. The first test I took before I asked for any assistance, I had totally bombed. A 47... I knew I'd need help and after working with Dave for a week and a half, the retake test I took got me an 88. Dave helped me gain the confidence I needed to figure out problems on my own, and showed me how I could apply other concepts and equations from other chapters and solve new problems in a variety of ways. I am on my last exam now, and I still choose to wait in line to work with this excellent tutor, when there are another 5 available at any time. If you are in need of assistance with Math, and are looking for someone to help you either from the very basics to intermediate and advanced topics, I would highly recommend Dave as he is an outstanding tutor, with loads of patience and knowledge, as well as being incomparable to other tutors in his willingness to help and assist you as much as you need. Thanks Dave!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
