Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

We are so happy we found Black Dog K9! Our 1 year-old rat terrier/dalmatian mix, Buddy, loves Marty and loves his dog Ida! I can't say enough wonderful things about our experience with Black Dog. Before we started training with Marty, we struggled to train Buddy with general obedience and meeting other dogs. Buddy barks like crazy at large dogs, but tonight Buddy played with 105 pound Ida in our house. It was such a relief to see Buddy play well with another dog! Marty facilitated the whole process and we couldn't have done it without him (or Ida!). We feel so lucky to have Marty help us with the socialization process, and to see Buddy have fun with a large dog! Before working with Marty, we received quotes from other trainers and not only were we uncomfortable with their approaches, but their prices were outrageous. Black Dog K-9 approaches obedience training with love and offers training that is best for the dog, at a reasonable price. Marty has realistic suggestions, answers all questions thoroughly, gives great examples, and has excellent recommendations for dog training tools. In addition to the exceptional dog training we've already received in only 4 sessions, Marty has been kind, supportive, and is really a joy to be around--Buddy thinks so too! Marty is flexible, punctual, and he really cares about you and your dog. If you're trying to decide between trainers, go with Black Dog K9, you won't regret it.

Wen Tze was an amazing trainer! Our dog Miso loved her and was eager to learn from her each lesson. Wen was knowledgable, encouraging to us and our dog, and flexible when it came to scheduling and rescheduling. We will use the things that she taught us forever and we can say that her training has helped our bond with our dog even more :)

Wen Tze is an amazing dog trainer! Our dog Ralphie was highly reactive (e.g. barking, lunging) towards new people and other dogs especially during walks on leash. While we found some success with previous trainers, Wen's knowledge and behavior management methods were the most effective for Ralphie! She taught us how to be better leaders, communicators, and provided us the tools to manage Ralphie's behavior. Ralphie is currently doing so well! His reactive behaviors have lessened tremendously! He seems to be enjoying his walks more and we are confident that he will continue to improve with the training methods that Wen taught us! We highly recommend Wen and Back to Basics Dog Training!

Wen improved mine and my dogs life by a lot! Layla was showing progress by the second session. Wen was able to train me as well, teaching me about dog behaviors and ways to improve myself as an owner. I had issues with Layla’s pulling, barking, and dog aggression. Now I am able to walk with ease and Layla is now in doggy daycare playing with every dog! Training was stress free, and my dog loves Wen! Wen was not only helpful during sessions, but outside as well! Any problem I had she calmed me down through text, and we went over the problem at the next session. Truly an amazing trainer and person, Layla and I love Wen!

I highly recommend these services. We learned so much from our time during training, both our dog and us as owners! We now have numerous techniques that we can use to better serve our pup and we wouldn't have been able to learn this without Back to Basics Dog Training.

Wen is a very knowledgeable trainer, and in a few short weeks, we have an entirely different dog! He was horrible on walks- pulling, barking, and not listening. Now, we can easily walk him with control. He doesn’t even have the aggressive reactions to other dogs that he used to. This week, she brought her dog to practice his reactions to other dogs, and he learned how to sit quietly with her guidance. This would have never happened before Wen Tze started training with us. I highly recommend her.

We would highly recommend Chris and Takacs Dog Training! We hired Chris to help with our 6 month old wheaten terrier puppy and were more than pleased with the results. Chris was able to customize a training plan based on our family home and not just an off the shelf program. He helped us create an engaging and fun training program that included basic house training, leash and walking control, when&how to treat, controlling temperament and discipline with guests, etc. We will definitely be calling Chris in the future for any and all dog training needs!

Wen has a very gentle, yet firm approach to dog training. I have a young, very small, puppy who would avoid training by laying, scratching an itch, and just sitting still. Wen trained us both in how to practice sit/stay and how it can be used for more than just simple commands; but rather redirections for common puppy behavior. I greatly appreciated her willingness to be a sounding board through text and her suggestions for how to deal with frustrating puppy behavior. Thanks Wen! Training is just as much about the human as it is the dog being trained :)

This company was great and extremely responsive. They were flexible and able to answer my questions at any time including offering helpful advice, then curtailing the lessons to my dogs needs. I highly recommend this company and will seek them out in the future if I have any further issues. This company not only trains your dog but helps train you to learn how to carry those lessons forward.

Working with Chris has been an absolute joy. If you are looking for a trainer for your dog, you will not believe how big a help Chris will be for you and your dog. For example: I was walking Kona down the sidewalk when someone with her dog asked if I used a trainer because Kona was the best behaved dog she had ever seen. She was so impressed, she reached out to Chris for her own dog! We could tell within minutes of talking with Chris that he truly cares about the dogs he works with and about us as the parents. His passion for dogs is clearly evident and his knowledge and ability to help matches his love of dogs. When we first were looking for a trainer, part of it was due to wanting to make sure we were teaching her correctly, and part was due to a resource guarding. After we had our first session with Chris, the resource guarding issue was taken care of in about 5 minutes! He also helped us significantly in how she plays with other dogs, she walks next to me, does tricks on command, and he helped with how she behaves around the house. Strongly recommend using Chris!

Wenzy is amazing!! After ONE lesson with her, my dog Milo was so much better at loose-leash walking. She is such a gifted trainer. Definitely go to her for any training needs! She responds so quick and her prices are so fair.

Chris did a great job with my adolescent pup, Toast. He gave me all the tools I need to know how to manage and keep up her training. Would recommend to any new dog owner, especially those who have adopted dogs with quirky habits!

Chris was very quick to respond to my request for dog training. Our little beagle corgi mix was beginning to react very aggressively on walks towards strangers and other dogs and the big brother lab/husky was also starting to jump too much and become more aggressive towards strange dogs making me anxious and stressed along with them. Finn being the smaller dog was constantly anxiety ridden in the apartment and on walks. Chris did a consultation over the phone to assess our needs and quickly gave us tips over the phone to immediately start working towards remediation. The trainings were fun and informative and best of all we got the big boy off the prong collar that a previous trainer had recommended we use to manage his strength. The boys are happier and better behaved and we’re better prepared than ever with a myriad of tools to keep them calm and us less stressed! Chris has been a life saver and we’re super pleased with the results!

Daniel has been wonderful to work with. He is though with his knowledge base and explanation of our puppy’s behavior even when it was not ideal! Would definitely use him again for any dog obedience training!

Martin is fantastic. He cared about our rescue beagle from the beginning, and made amazing progress on his first visit. It will take time to bring our beagle to where he can be a dog and not a guardian, but if anyone can do it, Martin can. We highly recommend Martin and Black Dog K9 Training and Pet Services LLC.

From the first class already Wen showed she is a dog whisperer and got our 8 month old pup to know he should not pull and criss cross when walked on a loose leash. Outside of classes he has been really stubborn and slipping into old walking habits, and Wen very effectively continued training both him and us on improving his consistency. She also taught him all the basics like Sit and Stay and Leave it and gave us useful tips on further training to not jump up on us, Lie down, and more. We (and our pup!) really enjoyed working with Wen and would definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a dog trainer.

I did puppy training with Chris and I am so glad I did! I was very stressed about being a single dog mom and no one in my family has ever had a dog. He was super helpful and responsive to my millions of questions I had throughout the day, and he is very patient. He knows his stuff and I would highly recommend.

I contacted Chris on night 1 of getting my puppy while freaking out after our corgi had just gone to the bathroom in the house for the 4th time in a row. Chris got back to me that night and we connected and our dog has been better ever since. I couldnt be happier to have selected Chris to do puppy training with. After a few sessions our corgi can now sit, stay, come on command and is all around a calmer dog. He even knows the difference between blue and yellow! We live in Lakeview for anyone looking for a trainer down here. I highly recommend!

My pup Joy is a 7 year old lab and he had never been trained. When he moved to the US, I just could not get him to walk on leash. He would lunge and bark at every dog he saw, it was impossible for me to control him, and every walk with him was an enormous task. I couldn’t take him on a walk without apologizing to a 100 people on the way. Then...I contacted Tom. I explained the situation, we discussed the timings and Tom was over for Joy’s first lesson. Tom definitely has a lot of knowledge about dogs and their temperament. We did a few walks together with Joy and I realized that more than the dog, it’s the owner who needs training. 2 sessions later, Joy was walking on the streets like the most perfect dog ever. The small tricks and tips which I received from Tom proved to be super helpful! Tom is overall a great guy, very punctual, and understands dogs very well. I wouldn’t call him a dog lover, but he is definitely a perfect dog psychologist. The biggest challenge which I faced and many owners might face is getting out of habit of babying your dog and letting them be stubborn. I believe that was a major game changer. I was initially apprehensive about using a prong collar on Joy and I would suggest all owners to get professional help from individuals like Tom before trying to use any corrective methods on your dog. If used properly, they can correct your dogs behavior. I am now in process of transitioning from the prong collar to a normal one. Thanks Tom for all your help

Wen is so awesome to work with, she’s a natural dog whisperer! She knows how to communicate with dogs and puppies and teaches you how to best communicate with your dog as well! To be honest, I felt the training was equally for my 3 month old Bernedoodle Naiya and myself! In just 3 weeks we worked on proper leash walking, leash popping, leave it, no, sit/stay (she even brought her puppy out to help teach my puppy to sit/stay around other dogs!!), come here and hand touch. We also worked a lot on the basic commands with our puppy and Wen was an awesome resource to ensure we were on the right track. I’d highly recommend to anyone looking to jump start their puppy on the road to being an amazing, attentive and well mannered dog!

Wen did such an amazing job with our puppy, Sydney! Our original reason for hiring her was because Sydney was a STUBBORN 3 month old puppy with a tendency to bite on occasion. Since we started training, Wen has helped her behavior immensely. Not only does Sydney no longer bite, but she has learned to respect us as her owners and listens much better because of it. Wen came to our apartment to train once a week, and kindly worked with our schedules to find the perfect time so both my boyfriend and I could be involved in training. Wen also was very responsive to text messages whenever we had a question or concern in between training sessions. We would HIGHLY recommend Wen to anyone looking for a dog or puppy trainer!

My dog suffered from separation anxiety as well as leash aggression with other dogs. I was hoping to find some methods to combat these issues, and I am beyond impressed on the progress we have made. Chris has incredible tactics that work so well and so quickly! I am to the point where I can take my pup anywhere without being nervous about her behavior. Her progress has been incredible - you can tell she has lots of confidence in herself now! Chris is wonderful and so easy to work with! I highly, highly recommend if you're looking for a dog trainer who wants to see you and your dog succeed as much as you do!
