I am a friendly and patient mentor and I know a lot about my profession and all its different musical styles. Listening to one of my students play a piece for me (and her family) when she has mastered it. I derive great satisfaction from helping my students to progress and improve.

  • Tom Margarites guitar teacher/performer

GUITAR TEACHING: God blessed me with the ability to break down complex and abstract concepts that are easily comprehended by anyone old enough to read as long as they can pay attention! I have taught so many people who took lessons from other teachers, and almost every time without fail,I am amazed at how little the student learned from his previous teacher.I think I am the best teacher for anyone who is brand new to guitar/music or to anyone who wants to become smarter about theory, songwriting, improvisation etc. btw,I have a reverbnation page under Tom Margarites that features 50 original compositions written, performed and recorded by me. All instruments. PERFORMER: Not only can I sing and play a wide variety of popular music from virtually every and any genre imaginable,I am also an accomplished classical guitarist/finger style expert as well as a virtuoso level soloist that transforms basic "cover tunes" into something unique and special that takes the performance far beyond simply mimicking a pop song like a record. We have mp3 players for that!... It's a great feeling knowing that you can change and have changed someones life and teaching guitar gives me that opportunity every day! For reasons somewhat unclear to me,I have spent the lions share of my waking hours over the past 42 years, studying and honing my craft and understanding of music.I cannot think of a better way for me to utilize the fruits of my labour than spreading the joy that is music, either through teaching or through performance!

I provide in-home guitar lessons throughout Lake County, IL. I have been teaching people how to rock since 2004, and have been playing and studying the guitar since 1985. I teach with a very music-driven approach, as I have found it to be the most effective way to master the instrument. I will show you how to practice in an effective manner that gets the results you're looking for. While I can not make miracles happen, I can help you achieve your goals, and help cut the learning curve down to size. If you're interested in having me come by and teach you how to play, either check out my website or give me a call.

What do you love about your job?

I really do value my independence. Although to be honest, working for myself, I don't know how independent I am since I am always looking over my own shoulder. It's hard working for such a perfectionist. Besides myself, I am only beholden to my clients, and I can pick and choose to work with "nice" people. I suppose that I'm a bit beholden to my own family too, as far as putting food on the table. That's why I charge my clients. I like being in charge of what I do and being in control of the things that I create.

What or who inspired you to start your own business?

I've started my own business more than once in totally different fields--high tech and low-tech trades, consulting, entertainment, and now teaching. Through them all, the common themes are that I like being able to take my ideas and go with them as I see fit, and also, I like working directly with the "end users" or the customers. I enjoy building the relationships with my clients. Now, my customers are families, and I call them as such because it all comes down to relationship building. I am a hands-on type of person with the if-you-want-it-done-right-do-it-yourself mentality. I don't know if I always do it right, but I like to do it myself. I learn a lot about what I like, what I don't like, what other people like, and what they don't like. Why? I guess that's ultimately my business--coming to understand a bit about all the people with whom I interact.
