I consider myself an adult 'beginner' student because even though I took lessons for a year or two in my pre-teens, I've long since forgotten how to play the piano or read music. Recently I found Jon Novi through the Thumbtack website. I was thrilled to learn that, right from the start, he would teach me the songs I was most interested in playing – bypassing the uninspiring, rigid, standard training lessons. In fact, we spent our very first session on a song that I've been wanting to play for years, and I enjoyed every minute of it! Jon has the qualities of a great teacher – he's very enthusiastic, positive, and encouraging, as well as a very skilled musician. Best of all, he takes the time to listen to the student, guiding and motivating them to reach their goals.

My 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son have taken piano lessons with Elif for several years now. Aside from being a wonderful teacher, she has also taught my children many life lessons through her instruction that will stick with them forever. I cannot say enough good things about her!

Drew has been taking lessons since he was 7 in voice, piano and acting. Theses gifted teachers helped him pursue his career in film, musical theater and, now in his final year at USC , an undergraduate degree in music composition. Most recently, Drew will be singing with the USC Chamber Singers! Each student studying with Stacey De & Co excels from their love for teaching the arts!!!

Michele is wonderful in all aspects of her service. She is extremely patient and encouraging. She truly knows her craft and this is very easy to see when you are with her. She has a balanced approach to learning how to not only use your voice but your ears as well. It's been a pleasure working with her. I would recommend Michele to anyone that is interested in vocal lessons.

I have been taking lessons from Dan for more than two and a half years and it something I look forward to every week. Aside from being a great teacher, he is fun, understanding and very talented. He takes the time to help you understand the structure of what you are learning without over burdening you with theory. He is also really interested in making sure you are enjoying playing (that is the point) and getting out of it exactly what you want. Any time I have a request (no matter how absurd) of a song to learn, Dan takes the time to find a good arrangement at my level and teaches it to me. It is really nice having that flexibility and personal investment in my lessons. In just two and a half years, I went from playing no to guitar to be comfortable jamming with my friends while also developing my classical guitar playing skills. His musical interests are vast; from beautiful classical pieces to classic rock solos to movie soundtracks (he loves Storybook Love from the Princess Bride). This blend of genres and talents truly sets Dan a part and I would encourage anyone looking to finally learn the guitar to sign up for lessons with Dan.

Paul has been the most amazing instructor. I have never played the electric guitar before and his level of patience has made it extremely easy for me to learn. He writes lesson plans and assigns "homework" appropriate for your level of experience which helps in learning or further developing your skill. I plan on continuing to take lessons with Paul for quite some time.

Peter is an outstanding instructor. Very personable, knowledgeable, takes his time to instruct, demonstrate and then, while I am peforming the move, if needing correction , does so in a calm and easy way. He fit the bill for everything I am looking for in learning self defense in a non class type setting. You wont be disappointed in giving Peter a try. He has all the equipment, mats, and practice items to use as well..He's also very flexible given my schedule of the times I am in his area on other business, to schedule a lesson around.

Irwin is great with young kids, and my twin boys (almost 7) have been enjoying beginning guitar lessons with him. I like that he teaches them how to read music and encourages them to memorize songs. It's how I learned piano as a little girl and I'm enjoying seeing the boys progress and learn to understand written music. My goal has been for the boys to get used to a weekly music lesson and enjoy that as part of their weekly routine...so far Irwin has been a great fit for us and I highly recommend! :)

I have studying jazz piano with Peter for 2-1/2 years now. I had a substantial classical piano background as a youngster, but hadn't really played 30 years or so. Jazz always seemed out of reach for me, but thanks to Peter I can play my favorite jazz standards at home and even hold my own at local jam sessions. Peter emphasizes learning music and incorporates theoretical and harmonic lessons along the way, which keeps the learning engaging. Just wish I had more time to practice!

I contacted Jerry, inquiring about in-home guitar lessons for my daughter. He replied immediately with helpful suggestions of an instructor. When I realized my daughter wanted a female instructor Jerry went out of his way to find out more about my daughter and the kind of instructor who would be compatible with her. He then suggested one of two female instructors he felt would meet her needs. I was impressed with the time and effort he put into helping me find an instructor for her. This was extraordinary that he would take the time to help me when it did not directly benefit him and he did not even know me! I had originally contacted Jerry because of his highly regarded reputation for teaching and instruction. But now I also hold him in high regard for his kindness and dedication to helping others find their way into the world of music.

As a singer I was not breathing properly and Jill brought out the best in me. I have been able to sing much more effectively as a result of her instruction. Phrasing was always an issue because I had poor breath support and after only a few lessons I was singing like a pro.

I have been seeing Jill for almost 2 years and she has brought out the absolute best in me and I look forward to every lesson. She has worked with me to develop not only proper vocal technique but has also instilled confidence in my life outside the studio. Jill knows exactly where to push you in order to get you where you want to go.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures
