Greg has worked with our 8th grade daughter for the past eighteen months. She went from being a B math student to an A student and has maintained that A grade every trimester since. Her standardized testing and CPS MAP scores have increased dramatically in math. Her confidence is very high. Greg is extremely knowledgeable and kind. Our daughter feels very comfortable asking him any math question or for clarification. Greg is the ultimate professional. He is always on time and truly cares about his students progress. He is wonderful about keeping parents aware of each class session. Our family has benefitted a great deal from Greg Pucci of Accel Math and Science Tutoring. Try one of his sessions and you will be hooked.

I have been taking Spanish lessons with Cristobal for coming up on a year and French lessons for the past 6 months or so. While I am sure that there are plenty of choices for tutoring this may be the only teacher I have had that I can honestly say has far superior methodology versus all my other professors. I don't say this lightly either, I say this coming from years of experience with other teachers in various settings. Just to give a little background, I studied Spanish for 3 years in high school, then studied in Mexico at a vocational school in a completely immersed environment (living with a host family of non-English speakers) far from the reaches of most gringos in a small city called Cuernavaca. I have worked with native Spanish speakers that speak very little English for 10+ years, studied Spanish in college for 4 semesters, and even studied with Professor William Slavin for two years in weekly private sessions, a local scholar who spoke English, Spanish, French, ,Italian, Portuguese, and Hebrew. While Slavin's approach was very thorough, Cristobal's approach is practical, more natural, and aimed at speaking. Ole! Spanish School isn't just another business in the sea, it's a place with an authentic philosophy and a natural approach to language learning. To make the experience even better, his rates are super reasonable and he has a very easy going personality that creates a relaxed environment. His positive ratings exist for a reason.

Renjie and I worked together over the course of two months in preparation for a GRE test. We had long sessions (3 hours) each time, but Renjie was focused and prepared and all the breaks we took were on my account. I took two Statistics courses in university, but aside from this hadn't taken any math classes since high school, so I focused all of my hours with Renjie in math. He has all of the hard skills that a good teacher/tutor needs: he has a deep knowledge of math and used repertoire of teaching strategies to help me learn. The teaching and learning strategies Renjie shared with me in math make it so I'm confident in saying I know he has the same skills for verbal reasoning in the GRE (specially) or vocabulary more generally. More than this, Renjie is kind, understanding, friendly, and easy to connect with. Both Renjie and I had traveled and worked abroad for a number of years and so it was fun to share stories in between problem solving. I got accepted into my graduate program of choice, got a full scholarship and a stipend to be a Graduate Teaching Assistance. It was a pleasure working with Renjie and I would recommend him to any who have an interest in improving their scores on a variety on tests, or to improve their performance in school at all levels.

I was so impressed with Kevin and couldn't be happier that he reached out on thumb tack. I was in search of a tutor to help me pass the Elementary Education Math Content Test (very similar to the ACT math). Not only was Kevin able to teach in student friendly terms, he was SO knowledgeable of the types of questions and concepts I would need to know. Kevin was always very punctual and approachable when ever I did not understand something. We were able to meet before tutoring began to create a plan that we would follow together. By the last session, we covered every topic in the amount of time I hoped for. If you're in need of any math tutoring, I would HIGHLY recommend Kevin. Hands down the absolute best tutor I have ever been in contact with!!

After deciding to return to school, and complete my degree, the last class I had to take was a Technical Math class. Being years later, this class was no longer offered - I had to take it as an independent student, meaning I had no instructor, or class to show up to, only a syllabus and a Math book. A Math assistance area was available to students, and there I met the tutor I write of here. Of the 6 to 8 tutors available, I signed up with Dave as much as possible. The class I was taking dealt with Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry as well as an introduction to Calculus. I could barely remember how to factor a problem, but working with Dave, he spent the time to help me get through the basics, and had the patience to answer many of my off the wall questions, and many that I thought were unrelated. The first test I took before I asked for any assistance, I had totally bombed. A 47... I knew I'd need help and after working with Dave for a week and a half, the retake test I took got me an 88. Dave helped me gain the confidence I needed to figure out problems on my own, and showed me how I could apply other concepts and equations from other chapters and solve new problems in a variety of ways. I am on my last exam now, and I still choose to wait in line to work with this excellent tutor, when there are another 5 available at any time. If you are in need of assistance with Math, and are looking for someone to help you either from the very basics to intermediate and advanced topics, I would highly recommend Dave as he is an outstanding tutor, with loads of patience and knowledge, as well as being incomparable to other tutors in his willingness to help and assist you as much as you need. Thanks Dave!

I could have never passed math class without this wonderful educator by my side. There's no question that I'm not the best student and I'm a struggle to work with. Maureen never gave up on me and motivated me to never give up on myself. Her teaching style and process made it so much easier for me to understand the content, where other teachers and tutors had failed again and again. Mo sets the standard that every educator should aspire to live up to. She is the absolute best!

About

I was a home-school mom for over 10 years. So, although I am not a certified teacher, I am a mother who taught and directed three children in how to learn and learn independently. Primary grades are my specialty, especially reading skills, foundational math principles, spelling, and English language basics. While I home educated, I’ve managed an apartment building in Chicago, part-time. I have been managing this property for 24 years. It is a part-time position, and I am seeking additional work at this time. I really like kids (our house is too quiet), and I enjoy helping them get excited about reading and learning. Let me help your kids to lay the solid foundation they will need to love learning for the rest of their lives.

I have over 40 years of experience in teaching all levels of math from grade four through College Calculus II. I am accredited in the New York and Texas states. I have excellent rapport with students. I will supply references upon request.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
  • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
  • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
