I hired Kosterna Construction to do various drywall projects, including building the framing and insulating the walls. They also put in support beams where needed, built a sub floor for tile in the kitchen, installed an exterior door with frame, built frames/molding around windows, evened out a sloping floor/ ceiling. I was able to buy my own materials and paid them for the labor. They are very experienced in all new construction and remodeling. Very nice, reliable, easy to work with. I thought they did great work for a fair price and plan on hiring them for future projects! attached are some photos

My house is about 3000 sq ft so there was a lot of ground to cover. Erika came with three other girls to clean and they did a nice job overall. However I feel like they rushed a bit as they went along because Erika expressed they had two more houses to clean. They could have done a better job on my baseboards, windows, and floors. She is affordable so I would hire them again...with more guidance.

Had Jason come out and quote insulated glass pane replacement on 4 windows (5 total panes) that had fogging issues. He arrived on time to our scheduled estimate, took some measurements and gave me a very affordable price for the windows and labor to install. We went forward and scheduled a date. There was an issue with one pane when Jason picked them up. Fortunately he inspected the products and found the issue. I was very happy he gave me an advanced notice so we could modify the installation time fram. I pushed the install date back a few days so he could install all 5 at the same time rather than make him come out twice (which he did offer to do). Jason arrived the day ready to work. He was very respectful of our home, taking his shoes off and being cautious as we have a 14 month old running around the home. The install was quick and painless. Jason left no messes and anything he had to remove was put back properly. I am extremely happy with the quality of workmanship as well as the product Jason provided. I will be passing his card along to my father in law who is in need of similar window repairs and would recommend Jason to anyone looking for an great solution to fixing fogged up windows. You will be happy with the level of service and the overall quality of the work. Thanks Jason.

They were excellent. I was worried I'd have to replace a lot of the windows of a building I had bought to renovate and he was able to get them all to work. On time, professional, fair price and was able to work around a tight deadline I had. Great experience.

Lou was fantastic! He responded quicky to my initial inquiry and gave a fair, reasonable quote. After I hired Lou as I explained this was for Make-a-Wish, a room re-do for a little girl, he offered his services for FREE. How incredible! Lou was professional, on time, (I even had to reschedule and he rearranged his schedule to meet our needs). He removed and installed ceiling fan/light fixtures and also installed the window treatments. I was so lucky to have found Lou on Thumbtack. I will most definitely be using him in the future for my own home as well as recommending him to my friends and family. You cannot go wrong with Lou and this company. Eileen Moran

I had a new roof installed on my grandmother's house. From start to finish Jose was very professional. He took the time to explain all the details to me and my grandma. He kept us informed every step of the way. Jose was very understanding with all the calls and questions from my grandma. My grandma is very satisfied with the quality of work and the performance and demeanor of the entire crew and that says a lot, my grandma is not an easy woman to please. I definitely recommend Maya Roof & Maintenance, Inc. Thank you Jose for such a great roofing experience.

From start, (with the salesman) to finish (installation) it was by far the best experience I had with a company. Salesman, not only knew his product, but explained everything to the smallest detail. When he left I knew exactly what was in store and how it would all take place. The installers, were punctual, polite and extremely neat. There wasn't a scrap to be found when they were done. Even to the financing department, when I had any questions they were answered immediately. If I ever needed windows again I would not hesitate to call Supreme Windows, Inc. back. They get 5 starts from me. Pearl - Channahon,Il

After several months of our house being on the market, we decided to call Hooks Service for an estimate on putting a hardwood floor in our family room. After hiring the service, we had them check out our hot water tank as we thought there might be a problem with it. They advised us of the problem and they replaced our hot water tank. After the floor was installed, we had several offers in the next week. After the inspector came through for the buyers, there were a few repairs that needed to be done and of course, we called Hooks Service. They once again did a good job taking care of the electrical and window repairs. I will call them again if anything needs attention in our new home, and I would recommend that you call them too.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
