Scott did a great job with my dog, Rylee. I was having problems with my dog growling and biting my one year old child. He came to my house and changed my whole perspective on how to care for dogs. Rylee has responded very well to his training techniques. My mom even commented that she feels as if my dog was hypnotized after Scott came. He has invested interest in helping my family out. Scott texted me after coming to my house to make sure that things were still going good. I highly recommend Scott to assist with any dog training needs.

I am delighted to write a review for Sherry from Love, Honor and Obey. I have a 9 month old- very large Great Dane. I was having trouble walking him (he knocked me down twice), he needed to learn commands, and I needed him to learn to obey. I found the price to be very reasonable- I was surprised at how affordable one-on-one training in my house was ( I was not confident enough to take my dog out to a group training as I didn't feel it was safe-he was too strong for me to control). First visit, Sherry requested that all family members were present and she asked each one of us what our training goals were (even the kids)-this was very helpful. I learned how to properly walk this dog at our first session, and by the end of the 2nd session, I could walk him confidently by myself. Sherry has a tremendous amount of experience in dog training and that is evident from the start. I am someone who has had dogs all my life, and I have learned so much- from nutrition to proper collars/harness, to appropriate toys. Sherry gave me a nice instruction manual with LOADS of good information. Sherry has made herself available by phone for any issues/questions that arise between training sessions. We have completed 4 lessons and I am amazed at how well we are all doing. It is nice to see Sherry in action, to see how well she can control a dog that is twice her size-using only positive reinforcement.

Chris was amazing from the start. You can tell right away how much passion he has for dog training. He was always just a call or text away throughout the entire process. He helped give me and my pup a solid foundation for training and taught us both lessons to last a lifetime.

Leslie put me at ease the moment she walked through my front door! She is so easy to talk to about any issues concerning my dog and takes the time and care to personalize training to that dogs needs. Her training method allows for the puppy parent to both see Leslie herself do it and then for me to do it myself, since us humans needs training too! It's very crucial that the puppy parents takes and use her guidance as it will pay off immensely! My puppy, Rhett, was constantly love biting for attention and bothering us during non play time, like dinner. Thanks to her training (me and Rhett that is, lol), he is not nipping and knows when we go to eat, it's not play time. He's also much improved with greetings, has better focus, and is well in his way to be an excellent Canine Citizen! We love, Leslie! 2 paws up! !

As a first time dog owner I have learned that the process to a well behaved dog is the training of both the dog AND the owners. Our rescue one year old Birder Collie/Australian Shepard mix was pretty well behaved indoors and in our yard but had a very aggressive issue when meeting new digs and people. He could not be trusted to not bite either. After one session with Lynn and homework he was 100% better. After the second session I have little fear of having a problem. Buddy still needs some work however the change has been dramatic. Lynn comes to your home with written plans and homework assignments. Hire Lynn, you will not be disappointed. Jeff Wadsworth

Here is a little history, we adopted a tree walker coonhound from a shelter in Tennessee and brought him home to Wisconsin. The first month was ok as we all got adjusted to each other. There were counter surfing, mouthing and dominance issues from the beginning. We knew we had a stubborn ALPHA, ALPHA male but we were working through it. The dog and I had an altercation over a rawhide where he became very aggressive and tried to bite me. From that day forward he would try to attack me unsolicited any time he saw me or heard my voice. It got so bad I would have to lock myself in a room so my wife could let him out. I am 6',1" tall and 220 lbs, this is the first time in my life with all the dogs I've owned that I was afraid of a dog. We talked to many behaviorist's whom all said we should just rehome the dog and had no answers for us. I was determined not to give up and make things work because I knew that this was a good dog deep down inside. That is when I was recommend to Shelly at "Hair of the dog that bit ya". I got a great feeling from her right away on the phone and was intrigued by her explanation of how she handles her training of dogs (it was a much different approach from what I was hearing from everyone else). This is a large breed hunting dog who is aggressive and she knew exactly how to handle it. She came out the very next morning to a situation where everyone in the house was uneasy and afraid of this dog who now was in total control of the situation. Long story short after two hours Shelly had broken the dog had him taking commands from both my wife and myself. We felt like we had our lives back and believe it or not the dog seemed happier that he now knew the pecking order. This was truly a Christmas miracle for my entire family. The picture attached is from the same day where that morning my dog wanted to kill me and what he was like by the afternoon! I cannot thank Shelly enough and I am so excited for our new life together with Bohannon. Todd & Shelly Bloom

Are experience was truly amazing! We have a 1 year old German Shepard mix that is high energy and within the first half hour Dee had her understanding commands like sit, bed, lie down and stay. She also showed us how to get her to stop jumping and nipping. Not only was the training great and effective but her recommendations for items to help walking and keeping her busy while we are not home were as well. We also really liked that she is very passionate at helping dogs and and their owners and that was very evident because she works with you during first appointment and then if you need any extra help you can text, call or email her! I would highly recommend this dog trainer!!

We are so happy we found Black Dog K9! Our 1 year-old rat terrier/dalmatian mix, Buddy, loves Marty and loves his dog Ida! I can't say enough wonderful things about our experience with Black Dog. Before we started training with Marty, we struggled to train Buddy with general obedience and meeting other dogs. Buddy barks like crazy at large dogs, but tonight Buddy played with 105 pound Ida in our house. It was such a relief to see Buddy play well with another dog! Marty facilitated the whole process and we couldn't have done it without him (or Ida!). We feel so lucky to have Marty help us with the socialization process, and to see Buddy have fun with a large dog! Before working with Marty, we received quotes from other trainers and not only were we uncomfortable with their approaches, but their prices were outrageous. Black Dog K-9 approaches obedience training with love and offers training that is best for the dog, at a reasonable price. Marty has realistic suggestions, answers all questions thoroughly, gives great examples, and has excellent recommendations for dog training tools. In addition to the exceptional dog training we've already received in only 4 sessions, Marty has been kind, supportive, and is really a joy to be around--Buddy thinks so too! Marty is flexible, punctual, and he really cares about you and your dog. If you're trying to decide between trainers, go with Black Dog K9, you won't regret it.

Jeanie Murray: Well, seven years ago Tom McMurchie worked with me and my 1-year old Labradoodle, Rush, in Phoenix AZ. I don't have adequate words to explain how wonderful the experience was. Tom was knowledgeable, professional, patient, humane, and just darn perfect. He trained me as well to make Rush an awesome, well-mannered family member. Then, Tom moved to Chicago. Rush is 8 years old (still perfect), but Tom has always been available for me to talk to him on the phone with dog-training advice. Then we brought a second Labradoodle into our home at 8 weeks old, Reagan. Do I ever wish Tom was still here to work with me and Reagan, who is a work in progress (almost 3 years old now). Actually, Tom did advise from afar when I had questions about Reagan. If you are looking for that perfect person to work with you and your dog, don't look any further than Tom McMurchie. Thanks, Tom!

Jim was the best! In 5 weeks (really just after the first lesson!) I had the confidence and tools to maintain my dog’s training. It made the world of difference walking my dog, Barney, each day when he would walk by my side and sit on command versus pulling the leashing and leading me. Barney loves our walks together, and I do too! He sits, stays and comes on command! I can't thank Jim enough for his patience and positive energy. His passion for dogs is obvious and I would recommend him to any/all families in need of training! Katie G.

Nicole at Great Pet Vacations was a Godsend to our family. Our 14 month old yorkie poo was disobedient and had awful manners. We did not have the skills to change the situation. In June, we did 9 days of board and train with Nicole and we all were amazed at the initial results. Cocoa immediately was more reliable with potty training, would not cry in her cage and did not attempt to escape her pen. In July, she went back for the additional 12 days of the board and train program and can now sit, lay, target, walk on a leash, leave an item alone and is a calmer more obedient dog. Nicole is a miracle worker and takes her time demonstrating how to continue working on reinforcing the behavior with the owners to ensure continued success at home. She spent more than an hour with us at the intake consultation in order to understand our training goals. In addition, she spent more than 2 hours upon exit. It is clear she loves the animals she cares for, treats boarded dogs as her own, and is a superb dog trainer. This experience was every thing I hoped for and more than I expected. We plan to continue training sessions with Nicole and give her our highest recommendation to others.

Lilo was my very first dog and I quickly got overwhelmed. I got the puppy package which was the perfect number of classes for us to train my dog and for me to feel confident in everything I do with him. We even did potty training and crating! Compared to dealing with classes or going to a trainer for sessions this was a great deal on top of being convenient. We would just meet at my house after I was done with work. I didn't want to deal with going to classes being in classes with other people and their dogs and Chicago traffic!!! Haha She is very patient and you can tell she really cares about dogs and their owners. She has this way of making you feel motivated and excited about training and 'engaging' with your dog. I felt confident and ready to take on the 'homework' she would give us. I would definitely recommend her to everyone, but unfortunately I moved out of state! Otherwise I would be telling everyone to call her! Speaking of calling, I was also very impressed by how easy she made it to get in contact with her when I had questions. She never made me feel like I was bothering her and as a first-time dog owner I really did message her a lot between classes haha. She was always prompt knowledgeable and kind. Some people just have a way of restoring your faith in humanity.

About

I've been around many dog walkers and the thing I've notice is the lack of interest in the dog they are walking. I don't walk while texting, talking on the phone, listening to music... I give the dog all of my attention because they deserve it! I always stop and give them love so that they know I am here taking in the fresh air as well. What I love most about my job is that even though I may walk the same dog every day it's not the same experience as the last walk. We always have an adventures time.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
