Hired Carrie to do photography for a wedding, and she did a marvelous job. We contacted her on relatively short notice, and she drove out from Chicago to the suburbs to meet up with us and discuss our questions and provide examples from her portfolio for us to see. She was a joy to meet, answered all our questions and seemed to have the exact style we were looking for, so we hired her. She came early the day of the wedding and took lots of prep shots, and was basically invisible during the ceremony and reception. (In fact, we had multiple people tell us that they didn't even know we had a photographer, or that they'd forgotten we'd hired one at all because they just didn't notice her -- she blended in so well and never got in the way of anything.) The photos themselves were absolutely fantastic, and she shared the first half of them (ceremony/family/bridal party photos) with us within a month of the wedding, and the second half (reception photos) followed about a week later. Very prompt! She was professional, responsive, and all-around amazing. I would definitely recommend her for any event, but from personal experience, she definitely knows what she's doing with weddings. Thank you Carrie!

Visual Ettiquette's lead photographer, Emil, is an AMAZING photographer and choosing to work with him was one of the best decisions about our wedding!!! My wife and I hired Emil to shoot our photos for our recent wedding in Downtown Chicago. First off, Emil is hands down a great guy who talked with us over the phone before the wedding discussing all the details of our wedding day and offered up some great suggestions for where to shoot around the city. On the day of the wedding he promptly arrived on time, even with all of the crazy Chicago traffic that morning. His warm heart, charming personality, and artistic eye made shooting with him super fun and relaxed. Shooting with him was actually one of the highlights of our day when we went around Chicago getting photographed in the snow around Grant Park and the Planetarium. I can still remember Emil running around (yes actually running) in order to find all the artistic angles to take our photos. He even stood on frozen Lake Michigan to get us the best shots of what ended up looking like photos the wedding photos of our dreams. Oh yeah and for all this, he is 1/4 the price we were quoted by other artistic photographers. Emil gets my wife and I's highest recommendation!!! If you want top notch artistic wedding photography that is still affordable, Emil is your guy! I never knew my wife could be such a supermodel until Emil photographed her!

Martina did a fantastic job on my daughter's wedding. I could not be more pleased. It was the only thing that went right during her wedding. The groom's family did their best to sabotage the wedding. Martika's calm presence made the situation less devastating for us, even when the Mom was yelling out inappropriate comments during the ceremony. I could never have made it through the event without her. She spent time getting to know us and came away feeling like we made a friend and not just a photographer. She did an excellent job of explaining to my skeptical unknowledgeable daughter the services that were available to her so that the pictures told her story. She checked out the event site the day before and they both became more comfortable with her and the camera. She responded very well despite the constant conflict from the grooms family making this event devastating and unbearable for myself, the mother of the bride. No one could have done a better job under these terrible circumstances. Martina truly went way above and beyond given this unfortunate situation.

Kimia was very responsive and arrived early to set up for a surprise proposal shoot. We texted back and forth several times and she was happy to give advice about the best locations based on lighting. She got us the pictures within a day and they looked great! Would highly recommend her!

Words cannot do the justice of how breathtaking the pictures were! Geraldine was our photographer for my bridal shower and we did a photoshoot before the actual shower. The photos turned out absolutely amazing!! She was there, on time, so excited and just gave us such positive vibes. We truly enjoyed working with her. She let us be ourselves but took absolutely stunning GQ type shots as well. I wish I had known of her before because she is honestly one of the best photographers in Chicago. If you’re looking for one and ran across her page. Look no more! We had at least 10% of the people attending asking us about her name and info because they absolutely loved her work!!

Our wedding movie video is absolutely awesome. We've watched it with my about 5 times already! The quality is great, the sound is good, the transitions were great, the dance part is hilarious and it was honestly more than we expected to get out of the wedding movie. We are very grateful for that. It was well worth the cost and although it was a little outside our budget, it was one of the best decisions we made.

We hired Harry for our small simple wedding. The wedding was held at Pinstripes in South Barrington. We have not received the photos as yet because it was less than a week ago. Harry was very professional, showed up early and seemed to be everywhere snapping pictures. I can't wait to see the photos he shot! Even at the reception I got several compliments regarding how good he was. Harry was very easy to work with and eager to please. I highly recommend him for any occasion. Very reasonably priced as well.

Mark was wonderful to work with for our engagement photo session! He made working with him extremely fun, and enjoyable for both of us during the photos. We were worried about how comfortable we would be with having our pictures taken, but after a few minutes we were really able to relax. We ended up having a great time, and Mark was able to take some amazing pictures. He was able to work extremely well with the setting and the natural light, and was full of great ideas for different poses. We were especially impressed with the amount of candid shots he was able to get! He was also very flexible with picking a location, since we are from Cleveland, and he is located in Cincinnati. We are looking forward to having him shoot our wedding, and would recommend him to anyone looking for an engagement or wedding photographer!

Didomi did the photography for my wedding & I could not be happier. David the photographer is easy to work with & very professional. He went prior to our wedding day & explored the area where our ceremony was going to be to get ideas for backgrounds & shots. The quality of our pics were phenomenal. He has a great eye. I have seen his work over the years as my friends have used him as a photographer, as well. His work has always been high quality.

We booked Kevin at the last minute to film our wedding ceremony, and he did a FANTASTIC job. There were so many last minute details, that we didn't get everything taken care of, but Kevin made the video stuff very easy. His post-production skills are awesome, too. Everyone LOVES our highlight video. Even our friend who does event planning in TN for a living said it was one of the best highlight videos she had seen. Overall, this exceeded our expectations and even our hopes. Strong recommend to anyone who is considering booking him. Some details on our job: Mainly indoor filming. Large wedding party. We got a highlight video and a full ceremony video. We didn't book the video for the reception, just ceremony.

Working with Ryan was a pleasure and I couldn't be happier with the photos he took. Choosing a wedding photographer can seem like a daunting task and I'm glad I found Ryan. Him and his assistant were helpful and creative when taking the pre-wedding photos with just my groom and me, and at the ceremony and reception they were attentive and present to capture every moment. Ryan made the picture-taking process fun, as well, and instead of feeling stiff and awkward with cameras pointed at us my groom and I were at ease and enjoying ourselves. Can't recommend him enough!

Jim took our engagement and wedding pictures. He took the time to capture everything from the littlest of details to the parade of family shots for us. We took quite a few outdoor photos as well. He was patient with the elements and made sure to maximize nature's backdrop. We had a list of must have shots that he was happy to take but we're also very happy with what he was able to improvise. He was very professional all through the process and the end product turned out great!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
