Installed 3 rooms of carpeting. They arrived on time. They did a great job. Cleaned up and vacuumed the rooms. We provided the carpet. We purchased two 15' wide rolls and one 12' wide roll because we did not want any seems. I wanted a specific trim strip at the edge of the living room. Adrian was very accommodating. We discussed options for the doorways in the two bedrooms. We will install a reducer to match the bamboo wood flooring in the hallway. The doorways are finished with the tackless strips, but long term, we want to use the reducer over the area where the carpet meets the wood floor.

I experienced water damage (leaking roof) and needed to have my hardwood floors repaired (damaged boards) and resurfaced. The area covered much of our first floor (kitchen/dining + hallway and 2 bedrooms)...about 875 sq ft. I obtained bids from several contractors on Thumbtack, but after speaking to each, put my trust Procare Restoration. Paul (flooring expert) visited my home, explained what was needed, and was very knowledgeable. John, at the Procare office was very prompt on providing an estimate and working with me on the specifics. Paul returned to perform the work himself (and did a fantastic job!) and was punctual, polite, and professional. The floors look great and I would recommend Procare!

After living with old and peeling parquet floors for two years, we decided that we wanted real hardwood in our area. It is relatively small, about 330 square feet, but very oddly shaped. We had a couple of people provide us estimates for our floors. Peter was by far the most knowledgeable; he asked us questions that the other people hadn't, and gave us a more detailed rundown of both our options and the tradeoffs and potential risks associated with our project. Specifically, hardwood is thicker than the parquet flooring, and that had implications for our appliances and how they lined up with the counter space. He gave us the option of either installing on top of the existing flooring, which would have been faster and cheaper, or ripping it out and re-leveling the floor (which we chose to do). The work was done extremely efficiently. We were able to begin the work within a week of agreeing to the estimate. The entire process, from demolition to finishing, took from Tuesday to Saturday, and we were able to move furniture back and start using the space by Sunday. The work itself is beautifully done. We love our floors, and you can see from the photos that he did excellent work. Once finished, he provided us with some care tips and equipment to protect the floors, which we really appreciated. Andy was easy to communicate with, knowledgeable, reliable, and hardworking. Our experience with him and his company was great.

Recently, with all my family we moved to our new house. Our floor looked terrible, it was a very old floor with scratches and dark spots, when walking on floor I could hear noise here and there. So, we decided to repair our floor. It is amazing I can say ! We did choose Idc Flooring. Very nice and very professional company. Our floor are like new. Couldn't be more happier. Many thanks!

I had a few projects that I needed repaired at my home this past week. The crew came to my house and had everything completed in a few hours. They were even able to fix my doorbell after another handyman told me it was not fixable. From painting to plumbing and electric, this crew does it all. Hire them, and you will not be disappointed. Special Floor was amazing - I cannot say enough good things about him and his company. He consistently went above and beyond, more so than any other contractor I've ever worked with. We had to move our floor refinishing dates up at the last minute due to other work that was being done in the common areas of our building, Radu and his team worked extra long hours in order to complete our job in time. There was no way anyone else would have been able to accommodate this job on the timing we needed it. The floor refinishing was also top-notch quality and we were thrilled with the results. You can tell Radu really cares about the work and kept us updated throughout with pictures and messages. He even fixed molding that we were missing and parts of the flooring that were not originally installed correctly to make sure we had a perfect end product. On top of this, he charges very reasonable and affordable rates for his work. I wouldn't go anywhere else to have my floors refinished next time and would 100% recommend him to anyone else I know!

I can't say enough about Michael and the quality of work from him and his team. No remodeling job goes perfect, but he is there every step of the way to make sure the finished product meets expectations. He stands by his work and his number 1 priority is customer satisfaction. He even went out of his way to notice and replace a rotting piece of wood on the OUTSIDE of my house by the sliding glass doors. We had Michael and his team install 900sq ft of red oak with Early American stain. He only uses the Sentico finish which will truly make your floor look like a sheet of glass. He should have some pictures in his portfolio. It is truly beautiful flooring. After the Sentico was applied we noticed a run in it. Michael had to redo the finish so he put us up for the night in a local hotel. He installed all new baseboards and painted them, and installed the wooden vent covers. We also had him install tile. He noticed that the tiles were not all from the same lot which was a good catch because the grout lines were off. I returned them and bought new tile. We hired his team to paint the house as well. All in all it looks like a brand new house on the first floor. I will definitely use Michael for future projects. Thank you Advanced Flooring!

Sherman Flooring installed wood floors in my bedrooms. They completed the installation and finishing of the floors on time. Neal spent time discussing my color choices and finishes before completing the job. I expected to have a huge mess when they were done. This was not the case at all! I appreciated the work and would recommend them to my friends.

Albert completed one bathroom that included ripping out and replacing a stall shower with tile, vinyl plank flooring and installing new trim. We've already rehired him to do our other bathroom as well. He's responsive, on time, patient while we changed our minds and his prices are very fair. We will definitely being hiring him again, probably for our kitchen, and recommending him to friends and family.

As a general contractor myself, I've dealt with many flooring contractors but working with Hardwood and Co has been the best experience hands down! This project was a townhouse we are flipping and the floors were in despair, but I cannot believe the transformation. I plan on working with Hardwood and Co for all future hardwood refinishing projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
