I hired Jerry to complete drawings and load ratings for removing a load bearing wall between kitchen and dining room. Very prompt, knowledge, and professional. Plans were submitted to village for the permit and they had no questions and passed on the first submission. Additionally, cost was very reasonable. Wouldn't think twice about using him again.

Brian was a true professional! He helped me design a deck for my client and made very professional drawings that the village required. He took our ideas and with only a couple small adjustments we had all the necessary drawings ready for the building department. He will be my go to architect for all my future projects. Thanks Brian for the great service!

Chris designed our house and pole barn attachment. He has been readily available throughout the entire processes answering all our questions thoroughly. He has been patient with my husband and I as we tried to make mutual decisions. He has also been in contact with us during the building process. The house and pole barn aren't finished yet but I'm excited to see the final product.

Roman created a set of drawings for an addition of an exterior walk-up basement entry to my home. He did a great job covering all the details, making suggestions that I had not considered , and came up with a finished set of design drawings in short order. Thanks Roman!

Andrei completely renovated three of our bathrooms. He did an amazing job starting with the design of each of the bathroom. He has a great eye for bringing different materials and colors together. Having Andrei with us, really sped up material and color selections as we were done with selection and purchase for all three bathrooms in about two hours. This was a huge help and not mention a relationship saver :). Now to the work - his team did an excellent job on working through each of the bathroom. Andrei communicated clearly as to what was being done along with any changes that are occurring which may not have been included in the original estimate. We truly enjoyed working with him and his team. Look forward to next time we hire Andrei for next project.

Caryn is perfect! My parents worked with an interior designer when I was growing up, and I remember she would always push really fancy expensive furniture on them, so I was hesitant to hire someone when we bought our new home. Caryn understands that we are DIY people, and works with that, and our budget, in mind. She doesn't overcharge, and we got SO much done in our one-hour consult with her. She picked out paint colors for the whole house and I LOVE them. I would have spend hours agonizing over it had I picked them out myself. Worth every penny! I can't wait to use her over the years to design our home!

We have a small house in Riverside. It is about 1,000 sf. It is a split level modern house built in the 1950's. We wanted an open plan concept with a cathedral ceiling. We removed wall to new ceiling, creating an upstairs loft. The project was completed in 2001.We have lived in it for 16 years! We love the plan and the cathedral ceiling 16' high. Our room is now open 20'x24', with new skylights above the living room. Arlene was a terrific help. We got our plans on time during the design phase, and got our permits without any new work or any changes to our design. We have enjoyed our redesigned home for the past 11 years and would definitely recommend Arlene to our friends! -Keller Jobe

I hired Variant to help me with branding and the interior remodel of my coffee shop. It was my first time hiring an interior designer so I wasn't sure what to expect but they were great to work with and the renovation looks beautiful. I could not have asked for a better experience or outcome. I would refer them to anyone looking to renovate their business or home.

Lauren designed our first floor bathroom in a 1918 Dutch Colonial. The aesthetics hadn't been updated since the 1970's and it was terribly cramped with little natural light. Lauren came in with fresh ideas and worked with our difficult layout to include an expansion and total reconfiguration to maximize our space. She was a great listener and was able to conceptualize exactly what we wanted. We will definitely be using her in our future projects.

We needed to stage our house very quickly to move to the West Coast. After we scheduled our consultation. We were sent a detailed list of things and how the project will be managed. Within 5 days our house was decluterred and staged. We needed to have our furniture moved right away so Sophia had all our things organized with movers and had new furniture staged in the house. Our realtor just had to bring a photographer to get our house listed. Everything was done quickly and efficiently. We felt at ease with this stressful move and ended selling our house in 9 days! Thanks to Space mkr’s team Amazon style our house looked like a magazine home! We moved 2 weeks ago in our new house! We liked the design Sophia did at our old home so Much, she will be designing and planning the layout Of our new home. Our family had a positive experience and loved working with a fun and creative team! Thank you again!

It was a pleasure working with Chester. He was a professional throughout the entire process. I had some city violations on a 2 flat I own. Chester knew exactly what needed to be done. If it wasn't for him I would still be dealing with these issues. Everything was done in a very timely manner for what I consider to be a more than fair price. I look forward to working together again in the near future. I would recommend him without any hesitation. Chlebek Architects are top notch in my book. Above all Chester was reliable and that is something that is very hard to find! Excellent service, upfront and honest off the bat. We were looking for an interior designer to really alleviate the hassle of moving into a new home. We were low on time and wanted someone who would manage a project from start to finish. David's offer was to do a free consultation in home with a full walk through free of charge, and his website laid out how the entire process will work so it was 100% up front. From a project managers perspective, that's perfect. We are looking forward to working with David on creating our home and will leave a post review of how things went. Expecting things to go really well.

I was planning an addition to my home. I had no clue as to how complicated it could be. Between permits, the zoning requirements and not to mention the contractor problems that could have occurred. I was referred to Illusione Design by a friend. He said they did a great job for him and know I know why. Mr. Quintero and his team lead me through the whole project with professional advise and a level of experience and professionalism I have not experienced in a long time. What I now know could have been a really trying situation, went off without a hitch. The plans were done in no time and as far as knowing your way around city hall and all the codes. These guys really blew my mind. So yes. if you're planning any type of project, I think you would be smart to give them a call. I'm sure you will be pleased with the services they provide.

I hired Angela from Elegance by Design as my interior designer and it was a great decision. Angela is not only a designer but can be your general contractor or you can use your own contractor and hire her as a designer and she can also project manage your contractor so you aren’t stuck dealing with every detail. She’s very thorough and passionate about design. As a homeowner you’re emotionally tied to certain things or how you think things should be, however she take a holistic design approach and looks at the space you want to design and gives you ideas of what things can look like based on your style and what would appeal to others if you were to ever sell in the future. She’s detailed oriented and a perfectionist. She gave me an idea to cut a piece of drywall in the bathroom that added minimal cost but added much more return to the value of my bathroom having a fireplace which you usually don’t see in homes which I’ll get back if I sell this home. She also helps you pick up material and has saved me money and chosen the right material like lights and tile which I was going to pay a lot more for. Never using a designer I didn’t know what to expect and now having one I know that any remodeling I will do I will use a designer more specifically Angela from Elegance by Design.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Waay less than $3K. I'm a renter. Nothing I can do about the DIY horrors in this apt like old appliances and the floors. Already bought lots of new furniture, carpets, etc., but still have some old clunky (yet functional) pieces like my bookshelf and desk. Can't tie it all together b/c I have 0% artistic vision. BROWN or BLACK is how you could describe my style. No matter what I go out to buy, I come back with something brown or black. Its horrible. I tried to fix that with a white carpet. Yea. Been here almost a yr. Love the building and neighborhood, don't love my "space". International travel is big for me, so my apartment needs to reflect that. Right now I have buddha, an elephant figurine, and a hollowed-out painted gourd on my bookshelf to get my point across. HELP!
