Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Unbelievably efficient! We discovered a leak in the laundry room ceiling that was dripping right into the AC unit. With it being the middle of summer, and with us getting ready to go out of town, we were in a rush to replace our 20-year-old roof. Brandon Matlock came to see our roof the day we called, walked us through the entire process to let us know exactly what we would be paying for, and replaced our roof in a single day with the help of his crew! His quote was also the best out of all the quotes we received. Most importantly, the quality of the roof was superb, which is incredible considering how quickly they got it done and how fairly they charged. Not only do we highly recommend him and his crew, but we will definitely consider hiring him again in the future!

The job that I asked them to do -- remove leaves from my roof and clean up other debris -- was done promptly and efficiently. I thought the price was fair.

It went great. Brandon Matlock is a local contractor that handled the estimate, ran the project of replacing my roof and was a breeze to work with. I’m really happy with the thoroughness and quality of their work. He walked me through every aspect of the job as it progressed, included a couple special requests I had and went over and beyond what I expected, he even cleaned my gutters and replaced some missing gutter guards. It feels great to have worked with a company that is honest, hardworking and does great work. Brandon’s a very professional individual whom I also used to reseal a commercial building’s flat rubber roof which I manage downtown. I would use him again and I would recommend him to others. Thanks again.

I would not hesitate to recommend Fresh Perspective for Roofing work. Doug Monroe was very responsive with setting appt to look at job, getting back to me with proposal, as well as answering any questions both before, during and after the work. He offered excellent pricing and the work was accomplished when scheduled and very efficiently. Doug obviously cares about the quality of the work his business does and wants satisfied customers who will contact him again for other projects they need done.

We had some shingles buckling around our chimney and an exposed drip edge that needed to be fixed. Felix and his team showed up early, quickly assessed the situation, explained clearly what needed to be done, and completed the work carefully and with attention to detail. The pricing was fair and reasonable given the high quality of the work. They also suggested and left extra shingles which was much appreciated. We are very happy with the repair and plan to work with them again on future roof improvements.

I needed repair work for a roof "valley" and for flashing around a chimney on a '50s-style ranch house. Mr. Matlock was quick to respond through "Thumbtack" with an offer to come take a look and provide an estimate. He was punctual and kept in good touch with arrival time, etc. We took a look together and he identified and clearly explained what would need to be done. He promptly provided a detailed written estimate by email, and at my request, a similarly detailed estimate for a whole roof replacement. After crunching numbers, I opted for just the repair, which was quickly scheduled. Mr. Matlock and his crew of two arrived before 8 AM and promptly got to work. The valley repairs were a little more extensive than initially anticipated, and he showed me where fascia and joist had rotted, etc. and how he would repair those as well. I was impressed especially with the chimney work, which included building a "cricket" -- a little doghouse-shaped bump behind the chimney that diverts snow and water. They finished a bit after 6 PM that day, and cleaned up thoroughly. The following evening we had a heavy rain and I was pleased not to have leaks anymore. In summary: prompt, courteous, detail-oriented, great at communication; I recommend his firm.

I hired Matlock based on the reviews on this site and his price was competitive . My experience was not that good. After signing contract he said he shorted the square count and needed 600$ additional to finish the roof. He borrowed my ladder for the whole 2 day job and never asked to use it. I let him borrow my compressor because his broke down. His crew left marks all over my siding from shingles hitting it. Edges weren't straight . Busted an outside light which he did replace. Clean up was marginal at best . Equipment was left on front yard 2 days after completed job. He complained we were hard to please. Two stars is a stretch. I was at the house for both days and was watching while I fixed my fence. Brandon is a hard worker but the crew as a whole was not organized and it was almost hard to watch
