Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

AllPawsonDeck has not only trained my dog but has given me so much insight to complete the training with my dog as well. She has given me very good ideas and I am very happy with the training. Remi is a changed puppy, for the better.

We took my 2 year old pitty mix for the 3 week board and train. She came back a completely different dog on a leash, and they worked on increasing her confidence and socialization skills with other dogs. Brittney took the time to figure out which walking tools would work with our girl. Brittney also made sure that she was 100% ready to go home prior to leaving training, and she genuinely cares about the progress of the dogs she is training. Definitely recommend!!

We received our quote very quickly, and Marianna was great with our dog, Bentley! She was always on time and took Bentley's behavior into consideration on what would be the best approach to train him. We had a great time ourselves, and would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a high-quality, cost-effective dog training program!

All paws on deck may be priced higher but you get what you pay for. Marianna is great with my dog, has so much knowledge and different ways to train. Plus she makes training fun for all of us.

We did private lessons and a board and train. As far as the training, Brittany and Shelby are excellent and pleasant to work with. However, the communication is frustrating, especially for us, as two working people with schedules to keep. We had missed appointments for the privates, issues getting refunds on two different occasions, and when our dog was with them at the board and train, we were explicitly told that we would receive multiple pics and videos every day. We received 2 pictures the entire time, after I asked a few times, Great dog trainers, not great business owners,

Mary Lou went above and beyond for our training experience! She was extremely flexible with time, day of the week, and location to meet our scheduling needs. She consistently brought new ideas and resources (toys, treats, clickers, play pen) to work on a problem in a different way and brought her service-trained lab to help socialize our dog. She has the skills to work with aggressive and poorly socialized dogs. Training with Mary Lou improved our dog’s behavior immensely and also gave us the tools to understand our dog’s body language so we can prevent problems before they occur. I could always tell she cared a lot about my dog!

We did a 2 week board and train for our pup Betty. Brittany did an amazing job with her. She came back a brand new dog. Betty came from a rescue and was found as a stray. It was clear she had never lived in a home or had any type of training. We couldn’t be happier with our experience! I would highly recommend her!

I’ve only had 2 classes with Clay and I can tell such a difference in my dog, Jim! Jim is a 7yr old Brittany who used to pull me on our walks. I told Clay I wanted to be able to get him leash trained and get him to the point I can talk him more places with me. Jim doesn’t pull me now and I’m excited to see how his progress at the end of all his training. I would recommend the services Clay offers!

In the 6 meetings we had we Marianna we learned so much and it was evident that she is such a lover of animals! we hope that we will be seeing her again in the future. she helped us tremendously with our Pebbles and we have a way to go to help pebbles with her excitement over people coming to visit but Marianna left us with strong basic tools that are easy to use - you just have to use them to develop new healthy habits. pebbles loves her so much! We would absolutely recommend her to anyone interested in training for the dog love in their lives!!! We miss you already Marianna!

I reached out to Brittany about my 5 year old Shiba Inu who really needed some leash manners, and socialization. She had some good reviews & for very good reason. We went with the board & train path for Rooney, which she does in her own home. She brought him back to me like a whole new dog on a leash. I couldn’t believe the transformation in just 7 days. She recognized the best leash system for Rooney & guided me on how to implement it at home. Along with that she began some dog socialization, & even helped with the beginning stages of introducing Rooney to cats (which was important as I plan to soon move in with my partner & his cat) If you request it she has a co worker that will send daily updates along with photos/videos. I look forward to my next session with Brittany, and continuing to better both Rooney & my own quality of life including more walks & park visits.

I wouldn’t give stars if I could have the option, the first day she came. She was rude my husband told me not to hire her I did being a good person and giving chances...she insisted while she was in MY HOUSE, WHERE WE PAID HER TO COME, and WE PROVIDE EVERYTHING. To keep our 4 year old in the back while she’s here..saying too hyper and to work with the dog. Although the dog will be outside which is where she was the couple sessions whenever she came. Although teaching the dog how to work in the environment it’ll be living in with the child is critical. Then I got orders to go back active duty called to cancel as we only had the intake with her..and according to her policy the intake where she didn’t even work with the dog we just talked and and she gave opinions and “advice” was a session so no refund and it’ll be saved to use later. So my husband ensured he was here and before I left stayed with the kids inside while she was outside in the fenced in backyard because the 4 year old was so consuming 🙄 and then we got a text attached below saying she’s there. At 6:40pm our appointment time was 6 even in contract she stated my husband changed and said 6:30pm which was not true I was there for this last one. I also didn’t work as I quit my job a week before to spend time with the family before I leave. He also has all Friday’s off..regardless for her incorrect information. She saids “I wrote on my yellow folder” okay well what you wrote down and what happened to cover yourself is incorrect. She was still late and no notification, when pointed out for last week and even this last message no response to rectify or care about customers, money money money. Even the week before she was late, which was fine cause we were home and we were being cordial. This past week we had somewhere to be at 7:15 and she came at 6:40 sending us a text being rude, and unprofessional. Due to her contract she gets the best of both worlds insult her customers have no professionalism and treat how she wants and we lose our money. Nothing she taught us was worth 275 and the way she treated us unebelieveable. Not even an apology or text back when we expressed how we felt and her being late this time and the week before or what she said in our home about our child because he’s a 4 year old and hyper and wanted us to keep him locked up in his room while she was here. And no our child wasn’t hitting or screaming or being a brat just running circles and our dog Mia plays with him we were asking how can we get her to come down on command and jump less that’s when she suggested locking him up instead of training, attached is the texts below. In addition to us sending her text saying we don’t even want to finish her services so we got robbed out our money and pushed to that extreme because of her behaviors. Please be wary. We’re very upset considered taking additional action but not worth it. We were still as polite as anyone can be, considering how rude she was to us. Also, when she was here she went outside with the dog and my husband we stayed inside no additional conversation over then work related to the dog. So she was not treated malicious or anything. Ridiculous. Be cautious.
