Paul did a wonderful job getting the electrical work figured out for new my laundry room. I live in an older home so there's always little surprises. He worked all day. He also fixed a light switch in the basement and installed a ceiling light for me that he wasn't expecting me to ask him about but he was kind enough to take the time to do it. Thanks so much Paul!

Sean called me immediately to see how he could help me. He was prompt, very polite and very friendly to talk to. He and his associate removed three heavy, heavy pieces of furniture ( an upright piano plus a huge wooden console stereo and a huge wooden TV console from my basement ). They were very careful and I would call him again so I'll keep his business card for future needs.

I had a basement wall collapse. We needed to get it taken care of in short order. James took the repair seriously. He quickly removed debris, and constructed reinforced wall. James was very reasonable, and easy to work with. He thoroughly explained what needed to be done. He worked on over the weekend to ensure it was completed in a timely manner. I will not hesitate to use James in the future.

Zach actually sent me an email on super bowl Sunday with an estimate and request for more information. My water heater had gone out and I'd had no water since Thursday....Monday morning Zach and I talked and he arrived promptly at 2 pm to install my new water heater. I was shown the receipts for everything and he charged me exactly what was agreed upon....which was $100 cheaper then the competition! Zach has a large stocked work truck, did not complain about needed to carry heavy things to my basement and hauled away the old water heater so I didn't have to deal with it. I would definitely recommend Zach Rotkin and have already started on a list of repairs I'd like to have him do at a later date.

Sean has completed several projects for us including framing our basement and reconstructing our front porch handrails. He's already scheduled to do more work for us soon. He's hardworking, skillful, and his price is fair. It's challenging to find someone who has excellent craftsmanship and is an all around great person. I never hesitate to recommend him to those looking to complete a project.

Dave has been great to work with -- we have hired him for a couple of remodeling projects in our kitchen and basement. He was also able to complete exterior projects for us as well. He was within our budget, the work was high quality and I loved that he was always finished in the time frame given. We would definitely use Dave and recommend him to others for remodeling projects.

Basement waterproofing...............excellent work by two professionals. They explained each step in the process and left the site cleaner than when they started! I would recommend Indy Pro Home Services to all my friends, and I plan to use them on several other projects this Spring!

We couldn't be happier with the outcome of our newly finished basement. Johnny stayed in constant contact and his whole crew were great to work with. We always knew what the next step was and when they would be working. We changed a few things in the process and they were very open to making changes. We had a few other issues in our house and Johnny sent a guy out to fix them. We got multiple estmates and I am thankful we chose them! Wouldn't hesitate to hire them again!

Total Home Solutions did a basement remodel for our family- Shane and his guys bid against 2 other organizations and were the best bid we got. I was blown away at the work they did. The old owners of my home had started the basement and put Shane and his team in a bad spot to start form, but you would never know that when looking at the finished product. Due to the space we had I had some custom requests to maximize the basement and none of my friends can believe the cabinets were custom made- Thanks Shane- We love our new basement-

Luis & Orlando was very professional, very quick and clean. The results are amazing. They repaired my living room ceiling, my basement ceiling and a small hole in the basement wall. You can not tell there was any patch work done. I also had them repair my son's bathroom ceiling, basement walls and put down carpeting on the stairs and upper landing. I also thought they were very reasonably priced. Thank you Luis and Orlando.

We are having an event at our house in just a few weeks and really needed to get some lights added to our basement where we currently had nothing ran for it. I sent a Thumbtack quote late Sunday evening, by early Monday afternoon Matt was at our house looking at our project, and by Tuesday late afternoon he had completed the wiring we needed for our bar/hangout room, which first required figuring out what was already coming from the breaker panel and running wiring before putting up five light boxes, two plug outlets, and 3 way light switches. He would have completed putting up the lights for me before leaving if I had already picked them out, but I’m still trying to decide exactly what I want. He said no problem and he would come back once we were ready. We still have a lot of wiring/lighting issues in other parts of our basement that we want to eventually get done, and I can honestly say we will definitely hire Matt as soon as we are ready to begin those projects.

The experience that I had with J&E Remodeling Home Improvement LLC was amazing. These gentlemen finished my basement when no one was willing to take the job. They are also very polite while they were in my home. They showed up on time and when they said they were with no rescheduling. The best part was their prices. When you hear the term "you get what you paid for" you always think negatively, but with these guys, they took that phrase and made it into a positive. They were very fairly priced and their quote on the work that needed to be done was to the dollar with no up charge. I am very satisfied with the job that they did and they will be my GO TO guys when ever I need anything done to my home.

1. Repainted exterior of three story, 3 color Victorian house, did all associated carpentry and scraping, re-floored (including hand sand and stain) exterior porch, repaired and replaced gutters, re-painted interior of house. 2. Fixed burst pipes, replaced all powdered mortar in basement, insulated basement. 3. Built and installed permanent attic stairs. 4. Landscaping including entire yard till and re-seed, multiple plantings, and fence repair. Absolutely perfect! I have renovated three antique homes before this one and have never had a contractor like Eleazar and the Emarias Group before. They were very reasonably priced, stayed on budget, always arrived when expected, did the best quality work I have ever had, always cleaned up at the end of the day, and even brought me lunch on occasion! I found I could trust Eleazar and his group completely, so much so that they often worked inside the house when I was out of state. I initially made contact with Eleazar when another home in my area was being renovated. I was able to observe daily the differences between the Emarias crew and the rest of the contractors on site. I know that this home owner eventually booted everyone else and now uses Emarias exclusively. At my recommendation, four of my neighbors had their homes painted by Emarias. One neighbor also had a bathroom remodel done. All are Eleazar and Emarias Group devotees now!

Affordable Home Solutions has been both reasonably priced and reliable. Bob and Mike have done several jobs for me. Bob rebuilt a storage barn door, replaced siding, mitigated water problems I was having in my basement and helped me find resources to locate a small gas leak. Most recently Bob and Mike remodeled my basement including demolition of the existing basement, putting up drywall, adding a new wall and doors to separate utilities from usable space, adding electrical outlets and lights and painting an epoxy floor. I have been very impressed with the quality of their work and their work ethic. I will hire them again.

These guys know how to do it right and for the right price. We were tired of our dark, dingy basement and they did not disappoint. I found an idea on pinterest and they made it come to life without breaking the bank. If you need some remodeling done, these are the people to call. #weekendatrenos #pinterestdreamscometrue 👍

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
