I hired Bob (not Roger; Roger is Bob's cousin who handles the Thumbtack account) to move about 70% of the stuff out of a 1,500ish sq. ft. house and into a similar-size house; my husband and I did the rest. I sent Roger a list of the largest items to put on the truck, and he estimated that the move would take 3-4 hours. Overall, I'm pleased with Bob's Movers -- thus the four-star rating. I elaborate below on the pros and cons of the service. I know that reviews can make or break a company, so take my cons with a grain of salt. They might not apply to you or affect you. That said, let's start with the pros: 1. Reasonable price: I'm not sure whether the price varies by the size of the job, the estimated amount of time, the number of guys on the job, etc., but I was quoted $60/hour for three guys and a truck. I was told that there was no minimum cost, so if the move took only three hours, I'd pay for only three hours, not four. 2. Excellent communication: Roger responded quickly to my messages on Thumbtack, and Bob responded quickly to my texts and phone calls. 3. Timeliness: The guys showed up 15-20 minutes early. Fine by me! 4. Care: The crew tried mighty hard not to damage any of our stuff. They packed the truck tightly so that nothing would shift. 5. Friendliness: All three guys were nice. Even though at times they were carrying some really heavy stuff, they stayed in good spirits. So here are the cons: 1. Truck size: At about 14', the truck wasn't large enough to move a small houseful of stuff, so two trips were necessary, extending the moving time to 6ish hours. 2. Smoke! At least one of the men smoked, even inside the back of the truck. I don't know whether the moving blankets were smoky too, but our upholstered items smell smoky now. A few weeks' time and periodic Febrezing should fix the couch and most other items, but the smell is pretty deeply embedded in one mattress and box spring in particular (they were at the back of the truck, right up against the cab), so those might take a month or two to air out. 3. Bumps and bruises: I asked Bob whether he offers insurance, like the big moving companies do, and what sort of policy he has regarding damage. He said that nothing would be damaged, because he and his guys are careful and "do it right," but if something were to be damaged, he'd pay for it on the spot. I expect minor wear and tear from a move, and very minor wear and tear is what I got: a scuffed couch leg (normally I cover the legs for a move, but I forgot to this time) and a dented dresser drawer edge. Am I bummed? Yeah. Did I complain to Bob? Nope. These little things are just the hazards of moving. And frankly, it's miraculous that these were the only physical damages. 4. Not quite three men: Two of the guys busted their butts for us the entire time. The third man directed the others, telling them what to do and where to put things. He also helped maneuver some of the oversized items out of one house and into the other, and he disassembled and reassembled a bed. In essence, we had the man-power of somewhere between two and three men.
Who needs two men and a truck when you can have three men and a truck. The Gnem guys were very respectful and courteous, worked hard to protect items being moved, and did it with a smile. We needed a small number, but some heavy items taken to the third story apartment and they had no problem with it. If you have a few things to move, want to save a lot of money, and need help these guys are your team. Thank you.
First Call Relocations is great! I called them three days before our move and they were able to accommodate our needs and times without hesitation.Mike and his crew showed up at their promised time, packed us up and moved our things. Then they called to confirm the move-in date and were there earlier than expected. The entire crew was funny, friendly and speedy. I recommend using them for any move you have coming up!
