Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

I contacted this company to trim a large tree in my back yard. He responded very quickly and came the next day to complete the job. He did a great job trimming the tree and his prices are very reasonable. After the initial trimming job, I asked him to cut down another small tree, and he did so for a reasonable price. I recommended him to several neighbors and friends.

ASAP came out and gave us a price to cut down a dead ash tree and trim a maple tree that was hanging over neighbors house. The price was very reasonable and work was completed quickly. They cleaned everything up and made sure we were satisfied. They are very professional and courteous. I would recommended them to anyone needing tree work. I will also be having them come out to trim all the rest of our trees in the near future.

We had a great experience with ASAP tree services. They came out to our home to give us a quote on pruning/crowning a tree within 24 hours of us calling them and cut the tree within the same week for a good price. We were informed the day before they came out that they would be coming and an approximate time. The crew was very professional and did a quick but beautiful job trimming our tree. They also raked our lawn after the trimming was done and left our yard in good condition. We would definitely recommend them to others and will be using them again in the future for our tree needs.

Saul and his team did an awesome job. My trees and especially my backyard were in a terrible state. They trimmed the large trees very well. They removed all the other baby/weed trees, fallen branches etc. and a huge garden patch we dumped in for years and had serious over growth, it looks brand new. I highly recommend Saul and his company!

They did a great job trimming and deadwooding two very large trees in our front yard. They removed all debris, cleaned up the yard, swept the driveway and, in fact, left it in better condition than they found it. We highly recommend them!!

They were very quick responding initially, and were here that same day to give me an estimate. They also gave us advice on how to properly care for our trees. Instead of encouraging us to do more, or even what we thought we needed done, they educated us on how to maintain the health of our trees and as well as make them beautiful. They cleaned up everything and there was no sign that they had ever been present besides our newly trimmed trees. We will be using them in years to come.

I had several mature trees on my property and my neighbor’s property hanging over the roof of my house and the roof of my garage. All of the Milestone crew did an amazing job. They were kind, professional, and thorough. They trimmed trees, hauled away branches, and cleaned up my yard of fallen leaves and twigs. My yard looks better than it has in years and they charged me a very fair price. I will definitely work with them again.

We are in a mixed feeling to leave this review: the initial contact and the quotation was very quick. We have two separate tree maintenance with him; 1) Trimming trees & chopping down one tree for $600+, and 2) Replanting of Maple tree for $300. 1) was taken care of in a reasonable time frame in September. We were informed that the Maple tree would not be released from Nursey till October 1, so he said he will come back as soon as it is released in beg/Oct. Now it's middle of the October, and we somewhat lost contact with him. No return calls nor e-mails. His voice mail now not accepting any messages. It looks like for us that he suddenly disappeared after larger part of our contract. Perhaps $300 is not worth coming back? Phil, if you see this, please contact us. We still want to work with you...

Saul and his crew removed 2 large trees and trimmed another tree in our backyard. We were extremely pleased with his expertise and professionalism. He responded quickly to our request -- showed up on time and when promised to complete job. The trees that were removed were close to a flower garden--Saul did an amazing job at dropping limbs without harming any flowers! The crew did a very thorough job at cleaning up the debris and the stump grinding was also completed to our satisfaction in a very timely manner. From start to finish, we couldn't be more pleased with the job and would highly recommend Saul/AsapTree Services.

Very prompt in removing tree off of house. The issue is that when Phil originally came out to our property to assess, he provided us with a quote and also said he would trim the stump down as much as possible due to fencing in the way. After he came back to remove the rest of the tree out of our yard, which was 2 days later than originally stated, he left the stump as is and he proceeded to provide us with a final invoice that was $500 MORE than our quote. He actually scribbled out the original quote and placed the new price on our copy of our quote and handed it back to us. Very unprofessional and disappointing. Prior to leaving he said, let me know once the fence is removed and I'll come out and provide you a quote for the stump (which originally was supposed to be included)
