Gary is a consummate professional who visited our home to provide advice on several issues that concerned us. He sent an itemized proposal within 24 hours of visiting our home and was able repair our leaky tile roof and install safety handrails in our shower and outside entry in one visit. While on our roof, he observed that the chimney on our 85 yr old house is in need of repair, took pictures to show what needs to be done and suggested a time line for addressing the problems. (No hard sell on immediately fixing it). He is thorough and clearly takes pride in providing quality work. We highly recommend Gary, and you will, too.

Added a roof to our existing deck, framed it added shingles, vinyl to the underside with new soffit and trim. We were so pleased at how nice it looked, we had him to add the vinyl railing to match the look on the front of the house. We also had a "man door" cut out, framed and door installed. Shawn and his crew were very professional, easy to work with, performed precise quality work, Always on time and worked longer hours to get the job completed in a timely manner. Will definitely give them a call for our next construction project needs...

Pinnacle Remodeling tore off my old roof and put on a new GAF Timberline dimensional shingle. They replaced 25 feet of bad boards and replaced all the flashing and 1 skylight. I was very happy with their workers and how they cleaned up. Brad also gave me a price to install floating vinyl plank flooring in my basement. Pinnacle Remodeling is installing the new flooring next week.

Sawyer Construction installed a new full bathroom in my basement 2 years ago. Sawyer Construction and Roofing also replaced my roof just a few months ago. Dennis Sawyer and all of the workers working with him were very efficent and both jobs were done in a very timely manner and both jobs were very, very well done. I could not be more happy with the work and professional manner in the way the work was done. The workers were at my home every day and time that they said they would be here. I could not be more satisfied with Sawyer Construction & Roofing's work and workers. I can not think of anything that could have been done better.

Castle-Home is a very competitive, trustworthy, and quality roofing contractor. We had a couple prior bids and exposure to other contractors (including Mr. Roof), but felt most comfortable with Castle-Home. They did an excellent job explaining the proper installation process at various areas and stages, they did not try to upgrade us on things we didn't need, and our initial gut instinct about them proved to be accurate once the job was complete. If anyone wants the professionalism and quality you're supposed to get with a big company but without the "big company prices," use Castle-Home. We are happy to be on their referral list indefinitely.

They replaced our roof summer of 2016. They worked with us to get our insurance to pay for the damage to roof. The job was completed in two days. Barry was extremely nice and helpful with the completion of our roof installation. And afterwards the workers cleaned up the yard of all the debris. I would definitely recommend Barry and his company.

I hired them to place inserts in my gutters. While doing that, Tracy noticed some of my vents were crushed by previous storms. It could have killed us in the winter by carbon monoxide build up. We ended up with all that fixed plus a new roof because the shingles couldn't be matched because they were discontinued for poor quality. I had no clue about any of that and my house was only 10 years old! Also being a single parent it made me feel grateful to have someone looking out for us. They were trustworthy, fast and did great work. I highly recommend them and I quite often do!!!

Mr. Hellard and his crew did a wonderful job repairing leaks around skylights and popups on our roof. After torrential downpours, we are still leak free.

My name is Malisa Rose, and I had this company do some extensive work for me; i.e.: totally tear out my bathroom & re-do (this involved having to replace some floor joists that were rotted) then totally tear out and replace my kitchen. The whole corner of my house had to be jacked up, and a lot molre was wrong than we thought. Garry was very professional, not only that, he either showed me or took pictures of everything wrong so I could see it myself. I really appreciated this, as I have had many bad contractor experiences in the past. After all that, he fixed my roof, installed ceramic tile, and gave me the best service, price, and quality of work that I have ever had done! Thank you Done Wright! If any one needs to contact me for a reference, call me at (502) 583-2006.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
