Bob was great! He was timely and able to come out right away. He was very professional and explained why my new wireless thermostat needed a separate module with the wiring I had for my furnace. This would have taken me many hours and lots of frustration and I wouldn't have been able to install it myself in the end.

I was very happy with my Thumbtack referral experience in finding Michael Gonzales. He was very prompt in responding to my quote request, answered ALL my online questions and came within 2 days. He was polite, reasonably priced, no hidden charges, and no hard sell to replace furnace. Installed part as quoted. I would recommend him. As a widow of a General Contractor who no longer has any good sub contractor connections for services anymore, I would say Casa Heating & Cooling is a good fit for someone looking for good service and honest fair pricing! Thanks again Michael for restoring my air-con during this sweltering heatwave!

Doyle is a first rate professional who carefully dealt with the details on all aspects of our installation. He was a problem solver in figuring out an install solution for a new model that two others said was not possible. I would definitely hire him again. A++++

Chicago Fireplace & Chimney Co did an excellent job of rebuilding the top of my chimney and installing a chimney liner for my boiler and water heater system. I had them come out for a 2nd opinion on work that another company had recommended and I wasn't very comfortable with. Everyone from the initial call and estimate to the onsite workers were very friendly and explained everything to me with a lot of details. The work was performed efficiently and they cleaned up after themselves thoroughly. I'd highly recommend them and will definitely use them in the future.

Tony was great. He took a light fixture down and put up a ceiling fan in its place, he hung a couple of paintings and removed and replaced several towel bars in one bathroom. I’d definitely hire him again.

Everyone at Premium was wonderful. Betty was eager to help and answered all our questions. She was able to schedule us promptly and didn't charge us a dime when Mike came out for what I thought would be routine maintenance and what turned out to be needing a new furnace. Mike gave me a great quote on the spot and was not pushy at all, allowing me to get other quotes and do some research before scheduling for the replacement. He went above and beyond with the install and even added some great features at no additional cost and without prompting. The job was more complicated than initially thought and Mike and his partner came back the very next day to make sure the job was complete. We are so thankful for the great job they did. This is not a fancy operation and has very little online presence- because they focus on what they do- HVAC services. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing HVAC work.

Matt was wonderful to work with and went above and beyond in answering all my questions and ensuring everything was done right- even including helping us replace another household appliance that was past its prime. I have been knowing Kermit for 17 years when I bout my house. He was referred to me to put in a new furnace in my house which I had only been living in for six months. I still have that same furnace. If I call Kermit about any issue whether its my furnace, air conditioner or electrical he is prompt to fix the issue. I have and will continue to refer him to friends, family or my neighbors. I had humidifier installation service from Jaime. I found him on Thumbtack and he was very patient answering all my questions before the project. He was exact on time for my appointment, which is very rare among all the contractors I've used. The space on the return duct is pretty tight for the humidifier. He moved an electric box and reconnect furnace flue to make space. The installation was done smoothly without any issues, and he cleaned up everything before left. I really enjoyed his service and I will definitely call him again for my future needs on my HVAC system.

I had my furnace act up last winter. Justin “owner of exact temp control” came over the next day. I was convinced I was about to spend 1000s. He was able to get my furnace up and running quickly and for a great price! I had him do an air conditioning maintience for me this spring and boy was I surprised how dirty it was! He took the time to explain to me what he was doing and how I can better maintain my own equipment to prevent break downs! Highly recommend this company!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

    • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
    • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
    • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
    • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
    • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
    • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
    • Cleaning and oiling the blower
    • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
    • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
    • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

    • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
      • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
    • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
    • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
    • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
