Hollie is great! Our floors are wood/tile and are really tricky to clean without residue. She came back and redid the floors, and we could not be more pleased. She was great with our dogs and we are excited to have her clean our home.

Seriously great job! I had them out to install a new sliding glass door, and it looks phenomenal! He was very thorough but highly efficient. It was a great price compared to the other quotes I got, and he was willing to work with me to accommodate my budget! I was so happy with the work that I'm having him work on another project.

JM Painting was amazing! We hired him to clean all of our windows, inside and out to include screens and window casing. He was on time, got started right away and my windows were sparkling with no streaks in no time. I plan to keep his card and continue to use him for window cleaning and painting as well. I will recommend him to anyone who is looking for his service.

Ron replaced a sliding glass door for us, which proved to be very challenging since the door I ordered was not the correct size. He worked very hard, showed up on time, was reasonably priced, and is extremely polite. I was very happy with the way the door turned out and will definitely hire Ron for future projects!

I was very pleased with the work performed (replaced two window panes). One of the windows was part of a large 6 panel window and the other was a small window in the sun room. The large pane was, pardon the pun, a real pain to remove. It appeared that the entire 6 panel window system was assemble and then placed on the large opening. The guys figured out how to get just the single pane out and the new glass was promptly installed. For the smaller window in the sunroom, it took them maybe 30 minutes total. They did a much nicer job than a previous contractor I used for the same size windows last Summer.

We own several properties and have had Dan do varies work at all of them. He's done roofing, drywall, demo and custom tile work projects for us, his work is always excellent and fairly priced. My wife love the custom master bath with the travertine tile floor and glass waterfall in the shower. I would highly recommend Little Dutch Acres for any home project!!

I needed urgent repair of a couple of window frames that were rotten and were blown off to pieces during the recent storm. Randy was the fastest to respond online with a quote and to show up to give an estimate. Once a price was agreed upon, he got to work right away. Rain slowed his work but got it done by returning to work on Sunday. He seemed to deeply care about his work and ensuring satisfaction. I am happy with his work and both him and his co-worker Derek were pretty easy to work with. In retrospect, I should've spent a bit more time on defining the scope of the work (not Randy's fault) but I weighed immediacy being more critical than cost for this particular work. And, he delivered. We now have a Part B to include everything else I wanted to get done in the first place.

I have recommended Seniors Handyman to many of my friends. Gordon's pricing is very reasonable and the quality of the work is outstanding. From fixing a roof to installing a glass tile backsplash to installing light fixtures or a chair rail and trim, I've never been disappointed with the quality of the work. He is also always willing to work around your schedule and completes jobs on time. I feel fortunate having a handyman I can trust.

We have used Columbus Custom Builders for a number of years. They fitted our kitchen and recently completed fitting our windows. There was some confusion over the window finishings but they were attentive and quick in finishing them how we asked. We have recommended them to others because they are reliable and do a good job. They are approachable and tell you succinctly and honestly what is needed

About

Smarter Windows was founded under the idea that buying replacement windows should be easy. We strive to deliver the best products and experiences at the lowest possible prices, all while minimizing the time required from you, the homeowner. In a marketplace where convenience is king, why does purchasing windows seem so difficult? We asked ourselves the same question and came to the realization that the old way of doing things simply doesn't cut it. Often times, companies will charge 3 to 6 times over cost of installation and the windows themselves. They use salespeople and a long, drawn-out sales process to justify their high prices, but at the end of the day, there is only so much a window can be improved. The bottom line is that consumers are being gouged, and we're here to change the game.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
