I had a great experience with Your Friends with a Truck today! The movers were on time and finished 2 hours faster than the estimate, even though the weather was freezing and they had to carry my loads of heavy items up 5 flights of stairs! I will be glad to use them the next time I move and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for movers in the area.

These guys are my absolute heroes. Not only were they able to book at the very last min (my other movers cancelled last min!), but they were in constant communication, fees/prices were completely transparent, and the movers were professional, fast, and hardworking. They literally embody those words. They were only 15 min late and I got a call 30 min before they were scheduled to update me on their position. Every single one of my items (electronics, furniture, boxes) were in 100% perfect condition after the move. They moved me down three floors and then up three floors without an elevator both times, and did it so fast. This company absolutely saved my life. I couldn't recommend them highly enough.

We hired the AK Movers team for a recent move from Gaithersburg to North Bethesda. The day went off without a hitch, and was one of the best moves we have ever done. The team from AK Movers was on time, professional and very respectful of both our furniture and our time. Our new apartment is on the fourth floor with no elevator, and even that couldn't slow these guys down. If you are looking for movers in the area, go with AK Movers without question. They are quick to get back to you with an estimate, come prepared with extra boxes for any last minute things, are very friendly and personable and are super efficient with their time.

I had hired NovaMovers to move just the big things (couch, beds, dressers) from my first floor apartment to a third floor apartment around the corner. The quoted rate was reasonable compared to other movers in the area. The two guys arrived 30 min early and took extra care to wrap my belongings before carrying them out to the truck. They unloaded quickly and I didn't find a single scratch or ding on my stuff. I was very pleased with their professionalism and I was extra glad to not have to carry my couch up 2 flights of stairs :) Highly recommend this company.

I recommend NK Movers, after being cancelled on by another one here on Thumbtack, they showed me professionalism by sending me a contract and calling me every step of the way. We both had some issues with timing but we were able to work together and keep each other informed. In light of my building manager being irresponsible and insensitive, they kept their cool, and helped me remain stress-free, i feel that they cared about making this move as great as possible. Will definitely recommend!

The movers were professional, careful, and strong! They moved me out of a ground level condo to a condo with over 40 steps. Although the task was arduous (climbing steps in hot sun and temps). All of my belongings arrived in-tact and in working condition - including 3 flat TVs (42 inch - 48 inch), computers, and glasses. They dissembled and resembled two queen size beds and 1 large entertainment center. Value was worth money spent! I took the flat rate $900.00 - so there were no surprises at the end. The manager, Danny, is extremely professional and stayed in contact with me throughout. I would recommend Pack-n-Move. (Note, I did not rate them on punctuality because they were 1/2 delayed - but no fault of theirs. Traffic on beltway (695) is always a hassle.

We moved 8 days before Christmas 2016. We had movers come on a Friday to pack and load us. It was a two day drive to our new home with a baby. The movers arrived Monday morning to off load us get everything placed. (THIS WAS A THREE DAY TURNAROUND) We had a second drop off at a storage unit. The moving guys were as professional and curious as it gets. Rose was great, and this move was planned and excuted to profection. Highly recommend if you need honest, reliable movers. Zero damage.

I had a wonderful experience with Moving With US. They were on time, very professional, and easy to work with. I really appreciated their flexibility - we ran into some snags with the loading dock and elevator at our destination, and they took it in stride and made it work. They were very timely and things got done quicker than we expected. The cost is slightly higher than other movers in the area (still nowhere near the highest end of the quotes I got), but it is more than worth it for the excellent quality of the work. We will definitely be contacting Moving With US for our next move.

I was beyond impressed with the professionalism and care of this team. As someone who never hired movers before, I was not sure what to expect. These movers were kind and prepared to get the job done, arriving a half hour early. They were able to get the whole job done in 2 hours exact and didn't waste any time. They took the time to wrap my furniture to ensure no damage or marks in the process. 10/10 would recommend them to any friend.

My two movers showed up and gave 100% the entire time they were there! Would definitely recommend this company to my friends. The only negative I have is that on Thumbtack and my responses the price states $89 and yet when I went to website is say $99. When I asked about it, I was told that the price they quoted was wrong and they still charged me the $99. They should either change the price on here or honor the price they advertised.

Proah movers were excellent and great to work with. They helped us with the final stage of our move. They were on time, courteous and worked so fast! My job ended up being a little bigger than expected, but Bede and his team approached it with a "Can do" attitude and got the job done. Will definitely hire them again in the future.

Like most people when it gets to be the end of a move-out month, things get stressful and worries mount about being able to get "all that furniture" moved in time. I was under such stress for the past two weeks...UNTIL TODAY when Po's Moving pulled up. It was not just a godd experience, it was phenomenal! I was simply aamzed at how safely, securely, and most importantly QUICKLY they emptied out my seemingly insurmountable amount of apartment furnishings and transproted them to their destination. Seriously, I don't rave about service these days as usually there's nothing to rave about. Po and his crew however? Well and truly OUTSTANDING. Great personalities (singing while they worked LOL), obviously skilled at their trade, well dressed in uniforms, etc. An absolutely perfect moving experience. Now having said all that, I want to STRESS the thing we all stress the MOST about if we are here seeking movers...the ridiculously high costs. I had no less than 11 movers answer my calls for aid here and Po's beat them HARSHLY on price! I still can't believe it was as cheap as it was for all the work they did and the traveling to my location and all. YOU WILL NOT GET A BETTER PRICE FROM ANYONE on here...in some cases, Po's was over $250 LESS than other quote on here. So please, if you are intensely stressed about your move, and you have a deadline lease-wise, USE PO'S MOVING! I am sitting here writing this with such a sense of relief that they somehow did SO MUCH in such little time! WAY TO GO PO'S A+++++ and 6 STARS if I could!

I really liked this group of professionals. They were so fast yet careful and diligent. They came as scheduled, they were polite and helpful in placing my piano properly in the room. Beware of the other companies out there who claim to be one of only three professional piano movers in the area and give astronomical quotes. These guys are contenders, for sure. They were very fairly priced.

This was my first time using movers for a local move, and I was a little nervous, but this was a wonderful experience. The movers were friendly, helpful, efficient, and careful. They really took care with all of my items and did their best to make sure everything was protected. I will most certainly use this company in the future (though I hope I don't have to move again any time soon). I'll also highly recommend them to anyone needing movers or junk removal.

Mike and his helper were awesome, the two of them had the apartment emptied in about 45 minutes. Mike took the time and effort to ensure all fragile items were properly wrapped. After all items were packed,Mike actually beat me to the new apartment, had everything unloaded and into the apartment in under 2 hours, but that's not it, Mike also agreed to a follow on job of delivering a couch and 4 end tables to a separate location and also removed the old couch down to the dumpster. Overall Silkway movers performed well above expectations, I will definitely recommend and will use them again when it comes time to move.

I would have given a 5 star rating, but I only gave 4 stars because the movers had punctuated a small size hole near my stairwell while taking down a queen size electric bed frame. It was the fact that they did not tell me, until I went back to check behind them, which I pointed out the issue to them. Not telling me, was the worst part. Overall, the two movers did a good job wrapping and delivering my furniture and items.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
