Couldn't have higher regards for Ed and his team. If you need the project done right the first time call EBRR Logistics & Renovations. On time, professional and treated me with the utmost respect. I had a couple other contractors look at my project from Thumbtack and I immediately knew they were not qualified to do the job. Ed took care of the project from step 1 and I couldn't be happier!

Renaissance Restoration is an incredible company. They do business with integrity, and customer satisfaction as their top priorities. I hired them to do a major kitchen renovation project for my home and I couldn't be happier with the result and the price. From their employees to the owner Antonio Sanchez, they provide a service that is far superior to other renovation companies. I highly recommend Antonio for any project. Antonio has now done a kitchen, a bathroom and a basement for friends that I have referred. His design ideas are fresh and always kept within the ideas and budget of the client. He listened carefully to what I wanted and provided helpful comments and advice. The project moved very smoothly and everything happened just as he said it would. I have been so impressed by their work. They were very friendly, professional and always on time. I noticed significant progress every day, and they did a great job of cleaning up before heading home for the day. They were very responsive to all of the questions, comments and concerns that I had during the entire process. They put the client first, and will do whatever necessary to make your project a reality and to meet your expectations. Antonio provided me with a great lead time and a great price. My kitchen was completed in a week. I'm not only happy that my kitchen looks beautiful, but also that he met the deadline. Antonio was very helpful, and always seemed to be excited about the project, which definitely gave me a feeling that I was in good hands. He definitely went above and beyond. I have no reservations about recommending him to someone looking for a "one stop" restoration company. Renaissance Restoration was nothing but the ultimate example of professionalism, expertise, and customer service during the entire process.

My Interior Design firm has often required the services of an architect to accomplish our client’s goals. Stephen Dunakoskie became our go to firm several years ago because of the quality and professionalism he contributed to our projects. He is honest and dependable, detailed and thorough, creative and talented. He always goes the extra mile to perform in the best interest of our clients. I would highly recommend him for any size projects you may be ready to successfully achieve.

I hired Damian and Gadi to design an addition to my mid-century contemporary house. They presented numerous options in 3-D software to better visualize the design which was extremely helpful. We never felt pressured to settle on a particular design and encourporated our requests very nicely into the final product. They are extremely easy to work with and go the extra mile to achieve the desired results. They are also extremely responsive to our questions during construction. I can't say enough, we feel extremely happy and fortunate to have hired them!

Eugene is an extremely knowledgeable contractor that will give you the specifics of everything he is doing. He was able to walk me through the repair and teach me the science behind every job he completed. He was able to assist me immediately in my state of emergency and do an excellent job. I would definitely use Rhema Designs again in the future!

My family and I had some questions regarding a commercial site in Warrenton and both Steve and his business partner Donald met with us. They explained a lot of questions we had and even pointed out some areas of attention we didn't even know about. It is hard to find good guys like them who are top notch. We are going to continue to use them beyond surveying and use their years of experience to help build our new commercial site.

Josette Wheatley, of American Engineering Solutions, was my first contractor hired through Thumbtack. As a first time user, I was incredibly nervous of what to expect. I needed an architect to draw a product design that would enable my business to thrive. Josette's professionalism gave me absolute peace of mind. Her responses to my inquiries were timely, informative and sincere. The finished CAD turned out great and I intend to work with Josette on future projects. For this reason I give Josette the highest possible rating of service and experience. It was truly refreshing to work with someone who is not only incredibly talented but also a genuinely awesome person.

I have worked with Winthorpe Design and Build on 2 large renovations on my home. The first was a total remodel of our outdated kitchen. A few months later we had them finish our basement into an exercise room and media room. Dave Szeliga and his men arrived daily at the time agreed upon and were easy to have around. They communicated daily on their plans and progress. During the kitchen remodel, they setup a make shift kitchen with refrigerator, microwave, and a sink to make the inconvenience more bearable. The kitchen renovation finished on time and on budget. I am very pleased with my new gourmet kitchen. The basement reno was painless and also was finished on time. Their attention to quality and detail was impeccable. I look forward to doing future business with Winthorpe Design and Build in the future.

My experience proved to be one of excellence. When following my specifications initially midway I had another idea. She willingly accommodated the request. She designed a logo for a non profit in the works. Landscaping ideas, she most recently agreed to design a faith based tshirt logo. Two thumbs up.

Petar designed a beautiful two-story (1500 sq. ft.) addition for my house in the Pimmit Hills neighborhood, near Tyson's corner. The design included a beautiful second floor deck. His rate was much lower than other architects in the area. He also provided me with a list of references (former clients) who all recommended his services. He also helped me get the appropriate permits from the county and helped me find a builder to build based on his plans. I highly recommend Petar.

I am very versitile with my art, which allows me to create anything from an animated 2D French chef that's heavily stylized to a realistic satellite orbiting the Earth. I love that anything is possible with this job. Every project brings new ideas, new content, and new challenges.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
