I hired Bill for electric guitar lessons. I actually shopped for an instructor who would fit my learning style best. I learn by doing things hands-on, not so much auditory learning. After trying 4 different instructors, I decided Bill was the best fit for me. Other instructors were good but did not have what I was looking for such as: not teaching according to my learning style, not understanding my goals, or making me feel like I learned nothing after the first lesson. I felt none of these will Bill. After my first lesson with him, I knew he would be a great fit for me. You can just tell he has experience by interacting with him. I left the lesson feeling satisfied with the information I learned and that I am capable of reaching my goals. He takes his time with each lesson, does not rush, and welcomes all questions. He is patient with newbies like me and adept at explaining things in a manner that I will understand. I never feel overwhelmed with the information he gives. I like that he gives positive encouragement when you do something correctly. He will also help you correct you if you have bad form/technique. Bill is very professional, he responds to inquiries quickly. He has the knowledge, experience, and background to help you reach your goals. He has a great personality and is willing to work with your schedule. I highly recommend Bill as an instructor!

Gregg is a very patient, caring, kind, astute teacher. I have taken guitar from other teachers in the past and it never sticks. That has changed since I have taken guitar lessons from this man. He begins the lessons by asking you what you want to learn, where you're coming from and how you'd like to proceed, how much time you have to practice and tailors his lessons and recommendations to what you can do, without ever making you feel guilty for being out of practice and if you're busy like me, that's much appreciated. Another very cool thing is that he has a bunch of guitars you can use while you're taking your lesson so you don't have to haul your guitar on the metro or bus. Gregg is very knowledgeable about different types of music and also continues his own training which makes him an even better teacher. On top of all this, he has a positive attitude, a love and passion for music and a great heart; recently he started a non-profit Guitars not Guns chapter in DC- check it out!

I have been playing guitar for my own enjoyment for 40 years. As a boy I briefly had casual lessons in strumming along to popular music. The lessons weren't very serious or effective, and so I'm pretty much self taught. Over the years I've become an accomplished dilettante able to impress the nonmusicians, but always aware that I didn't really play very well. In all that time I've often wondered how the really talented musicians learned their craft, never more so than while watching my son's slow progress with the laughably unchallenging lessons at Bach to Rock. This Christmas I told my wife I would really enjoy having some serious instruction, and she went hunting for the best the region had to offer. She found Alexander Rani at NOVA. I progressed more in my first 4 lessons with Alexander than I have in the last decade. I see now how accomplished musicianship is not some unattainable feat of the few truly blessed. Proper technique and a little diligence can see even an old duffer like me making beautiful music. My wife, who thought I was ridiculous for wanting to take lessons when I already knew how to play, keeps telling me how shocked she is at the difference. I feel like an idiot for thinking it was beyond me and not seeking out a real teacher before. And that has been the difference: a real teacher. Alex is fabulous. I have to say I find it intimidating to be sitting down with such a tremendously accomplished musician. He is so at ease doing things I know are extremely difficult and he can throw in endless variations of his own creation seemingly without having to think at all. He is a concert quality guitarist of the very first order. However he is wonderful at making you feel at ease. He is kind and patient and never condescending or harsh. (And I promise, my playing should try his patience if anyone's will!). I won't say he makes it easy. Quite the opposite. Alex will challenge you at your level of ability. He will take you out of your comfort zone and on to the next skill or technique and tell you you are ready to do more. For me the first run through anything new seems completely alien, and many of these things I wouldn't have given more than a first try. But Alex patiently takes you through one little bite at a time and quickly it becomes more natural. In a short time you are doing things that you didn't think you had in you. And that has been the biggest surprise. I haven't gotten very far yet, but now I understand how it is done, how accomplished musicianship is attainable one skill at a time. Thanks, Alex.

I took bass lessons with Morgan; not only did he teach me bass, but music! Keys, scales, modes, majors & minors... he tailored his teaching to what I could absorb, and opened my eyes to the possibilities...

Jack Philipoom came to my attention at my nieces wedding reception in Williamsburg , Virginia where he was performing jazz guitar with an ensemble. It was there that I booked him for a garden party at my McLean , Virginia home. The flow and style of this extremely talented musician added an elegant ambiance to our evening. His personality is delightful, and our guests found him to be simply charming. I will definitely rehire him, and have highly recommended him to our friends.

I've been taking a weekly hour lesson for a month and have greatly improved my playing and understanding of music working with Kevin. I am an adult who has been playing all my life but with little formal training. I have hit a wall with trying to self-learn using books and videos and needed someone to walk me through some of the advanced concepts. He is very patient and encouraging with my efforts to apply the lessons to my own music interests. Specifically he is helping me fill gaps in my knowledge by teaching me jazz concepts and the modes and how to apply them to jazz standards. I enjoy the lessons and look forward to them every week.

You think you know guitar... but you have know idea. I have played guitar on and off for over 15 years, including practicing with introductory lessons as a kid, self-learning, open mics, and playing covers and originals with several bands. I would consider myself an "intermediate" player... Nearly one year into lessons with Dan Cohn and my world has changed. For those of you who don't want to read to much further, let me just say - he will transform your playing and take you to the next level. More details: I have had the awesome experience of advancing my rhythm guitar playing, learning how to "truly play" in a band and ensemble setting, and enhance my lead guitar playing, in addition to significantly improving music theory. Without a doubt, Dan is a virtuoso - a master of music practically without any arrogance of airs. If you can dedicate the time and determination to improve your guitar playing, Dan will create a customized path to help you meet your goals. Most importantly, he is an awesome person creating a very cool, inclusive community of musicians through his JamClass program, which aligns your individual lessons and study with real-life application during JamClasses, playing songs with an ensemble of other students. Improving your skills in anything is hard and takes work, Dan expects you to put in the time and effort - and if you do, you will be seriously rewarded and excited about how much you can accomplish!

My son has been taking guitar lessons for several years from various teachers but it wasn't until he started with Peter that his guitar playing technique really took off. Peter is an outstanding guitar player and teacher. He and my son have a great rapport and my son leaves every lesson telling me how much he's learned and it motivates him to practice even more. I highly recommend Peter as a teacher to guitar students of any age.

Carey’s talent as a teacher does wonders for bridging the gap between music theory and music performance. I went into lessons with only a very basic knowledge of music theory that I hardly was able to apply to guitar, but his lessons taught me how to play in a way where I can either explore the musical depth of the tune or simply jam, comfortable that what I’m playing will always sound good. It’s broadened my abilities as a musician without taking away the simple fun of playing guitar, something that is invaluable in any teacher.

Met Steve when he was playing a show at a local pub- got to talking and shared with him my 11 year old son's passion for music and learned that Steve gave guitar lessons. Met him on a Thursday. By the following Monday, he was sitting in my home teaching my son to play Everlong- Steve is passionate, enthusiastic, and professional- he's a full time musician- this IS his thing!! Communication with him re: lessons, etc is very easy- and my son thinks he's super-awesome- which bodes well for his own enthusiasm regarding pursing guitar. Highly, highly recommend.

I hired Brian because I am mostly self taught and I wanted a teacher to help me fill in gaps in my ability. For a professional instructor, I do not think he had an acceptable amount of knowledge. For example, I said something about a minor7b5 chord and he acted like it was over his head and said, "I'm not the guy to ask about that." I felt like I had to hide my ability and knowledge in order to not show up the teacher, and I am not good enough where that should be the case.

Larry changed my playing for the best, and I honestly couldn't be more thankful that I was lucky enough to find him. His teaching methodology, knowledgeably about jazz/blues/classical music have absolutely changed my life. Before I started with him, I had been self-taught with scattered lessons from the internet/local players. I had never really developed much of an individual voice on the instrument, and the guitar itself was quite mystifying. I never understood how to put ideas together on the neck with any fluidity, and I never really understood how chords worked/ how scales worked/ the symmetry of the guitar. Larry showed me how to connect musical ideas across the entire instrument in any position, no matter where you are - liberating. You will develop your very own chord and scale vocabulary, and you will have a powerhouse of ways to use it. Once I had the entire instrument at my disposal, he constantly and in innovative ways pushed me to develop my own voice on the instrument - this is key. You will sound like YOU, no-one else, and that is what is so lost in most guitar instruction these days. Not only will you unlock the neck of the guitar, you will do it with the most minimal effort possible. His methodology focuses on using the least amount of energy possible to achieve your musical goals. Playing went from a frustrating and confusing mess, to a relaxing and rewarding experience. Again, you will be able to take any tune and make it as originally yours as possible. Not only do you get a world-class guitar education, but you also have the added advantage of Larry's extensive theoretical and composition knowledge\experience. You will develop these areas of musicianship in tandem with your guitar playing: 1.) Ear training\sight-singing\sight-reading: Larry highly emphasizes and nurtures this important skill. He teaches you to hear musical ideas - you will sing them, write them, and eventually play them. Specifically, you will learn to hear patterns from scales, chords, intervals, and larger compositions. This is HUGE if you play any improvisational music, or with a group - your ears are everything. You will learn how to sight-sing musical notation also - a seemingly forgotten skill among anyone else I've encountered. You will learn how to sight-read music in every position on the guitar possible. This idea coincides with his general methodology: no matter where you are on the instrument, you will be able to express an idea. This is a great skill that I've been able to vastly improve upon - and believe me, I was terrified of sight-reading. 2.) Rhythm training: You WILL learn how to keep time. I often avoided sight-reading because I didn't know how to keep time very well. I started off with the basic divisions, and worked my way smoothly and progressively into more challenging divisions. Larry has an amazing ear, so he can point out when you are even slightly off on something, which was a huge help. 3.) Comprehensive music theory: Larry is a remarkably talented classical composer, and he has a ton of experience to boot. You will get the same music theory education as if you were enrolled at a conservatory, with worksheets, exercises, tests, and creative assignments that he developed at Peabody conservatory. You get all this and more. Larry is also a blast to talk to since he has spent so much time traveling around playing music with people. He is a wealth of information regarding other artists, and music history. He's genuinely a wonderful person, he's my musical hero, and one of the most influential people I've ever met. He's one of those once-in-a-lifetime treasures. If you are lucky enough to get a spot with him, TAKE IT. I can't stress enough how much you will thank yourself.

Teresa is a very talented musician and experienced piano/guitar teacher. She is kind and patient with all of her students and with everyone around her. Her lessons are affordable but also high quality—they cover music theory, technique, musicianship, repertoire, and even a bit of music history. I have had the pleasure of observing many of her music lessons and taking piano lessons myself. I would recommend her to anyone wanting to learn piano or guitar.

Chris is an awesome teacher! He has been such an inspiration to my young teen son who never played piano before Chris. He goes the extra mile with his students, is innovative, keeps my son's attention and motivates! He not only teaches traditional music that he knows is appropriate for the level and ability of his students, but also allows them to request their own songs of interest to learn. He keeps communication open with parents. My son has learned so much! Definitely the best! Highly recommend!

As a beginning adult learner, I greatly appreciate John's patience, encouragement, and musical expertise. John draws during each lesson from his own experiences and education to illustrate musical concepts and impart solid technical knowledge. He sets meaningful expectations for the learner and yet is very gentle in uncovering and correcting student weaknesses. John is a warm, generous, and good-humored teacher, and it has been a delight to be his student. I am very happy with the progress I have made on the classical guitar under John's direction.

I Have been taking lessons from someone else for about 2 years now. Im happy with how I was doing and coming along. However After taking lessons from Jake for 2 months now, I feel like I have made some fast progress. Jake really seems to care about how your doing and the progress your making. You can really tell his love for music , and my girlfriend who plays the flute and piano also took notice to that. He has me playing some songs, learing scales, and bar chords. And wow did that open a whole new door to music. A lesson of 45 minutes to an hour is huge, you dont feel rushed and you have good time to warm up, practice, and learn. The extra time really helps with my focus. Jake is a very good teacher and I highly recommend his lessons. I honestly feel like I have made Great progress and most of all Jake makes learing music fun.
