Makimanta removed a concrete patio and sidewalks and replaced a crumbling retaining wall and wooden fence in my backyard. More than any other company that gave me a quote, Makimanta really listened to what I was looking for and didn't try to suggest a quick slapdash replacement of just my fence. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail really shine through in the finished fence, and they worked hard to deliver the project on time. They did a really nice job and the entire experience working with them was awesome.

They have done excellent high quality work for me, on three tasks: building a white fence around my side yard, after removing an old metal fence; replacing the boards, railings, and one of the supporting posts of my back deck, and replacing my 50 year old cracked and sunken driveway and gravel-covered parking port with leveled cement. All of their work has impressed my neighbors, who are now asking for quotes for similar work. Wilson Construction are experienced, responsible, and quality-oriented, and very careful in understanding their customers wants and needs. I highly recommend them to anyone.

Reynaldo was quick to respond to my initial request, provided a competitive estimate, and quickly answered all of my questions leading up to the project. The removal of the old fence and installation of the new fence was completed quickly. After the initial installation there were a few items I noted that needed adjustment (reversing a gate and few sections of panel framing to face away from the neighbors, some nails that weren't fully set in the wood and a few crooked fence pickets. Reynaldo returned promptly and fixed every item on my list, double checking to confirm my satisfaction. He mentioned "this is your 8-year fence and I want to ensure you are happy with it". He also provides a three year warranty on the fence installation and materials, aside from natural aging of the wood, which is great customer service.

I am very happy with the job Raul did for me today. He pressure washed our patio and patio fence at our townhouse, and it all looks great. The concrete patio is decorative with small river stones embedded in exposed aggregate concrete. Someone took time to make this patio years ago, and Raul's attentive cleaning revealed the nice features. The patio fence is 100% better looking too, the garden all still intact and we'll follow Raul's advice to seal the fence as soon as it is dry. He arrived at the agreed time and honored his quote. I recommend Raul!

Do not hesitate to hire Jeff! He's professional, trustworthy, and honest. And he does amazing work! He came out within 24 hours of us contacting him to replace our toilet. We asked him to also replace our kitchen faucet as well. He made it so easy for us, and even handles the disposal of the old hardware. Moved his successful business to the D.C./NoVA area recently. Don't let the lack of reviews here discourage you from hiring him! We are thrilled with our new toilet and working kitchen faucet, and will be hiring him to refurbish our deck and fence in the next couple of months.

Ramiro and his team did a fantastic job on the stone patio and aluminum fence installation at our house. They were professional and meticulous and always went above exceptions on his work. I've already recommended him to several people who are looking for a landscaping/fence/patio pro. I will certainly hire Ramiro and his team again when I have a future need.

I was impressed with the work for the wood fence. He works with you even if you do not have all of the money. I would only advise that the fee for removing the old material to be more affordable, but he did lower mines. I may use him again for future projects. Suppose to come back and do my plants.

Sam and his team did an excellent job of "revitalizing" our deck and privacy fence. We wanted both the deck and fence power-washed, several pieces of broken or split wood replaced, gouges filled in and sanded, and stain applied. They arrived to do the job when they said they would and finished in three days. (Would have been sooner, but weather was a factor.) Sam even suggested a stain color that my husband and I both love. (We couldn't agree on a color!) The price was reasonable, especially considering the amount of work and care put into the job. We feel like we have a brand new deck! We will likely use his services again soon and would highly recommend to others.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How many types of welding are there?

Welding is a method of fusing together two or more pieces of metal using electricity or flame. Welding is used to construct buildings, make metal sculptures, build and repair cars, make gates and furniture, and for many other practical and aesthetic uses. There are multiple types of welding. Here is an overview of the most popular methods:

  • Stick welding: Formally known as shielded metal arc welding, stick welding uses extreme heat applied at the seam of two separate metals to melt them together. A third (intermediary) metal may also be incorporated for added strength. As the metals cool, they are bonded together.
  • Metal inert gas (MIG) welding: Formally known as gas metal arc welding, MIG welding uses a tool to feed metal wire into the weld puddle while an electrical arc melts the wire, which will fuse to the base metal upon cooling.
  • Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding: Formally referred to gas tungsten arc welding, TIG welding is a similar process MIG welding, but instead of using a tool that continuously feeds metal wire into the weld puddle, the welder must hold and manually feed the stick.
  • Gas welding: A mix of flammable gas and oxygen is used to heat metal to the melting point.
  • Forge welding: Forging metal is an ancient art that involves heating two pieces of metal until they are molten, then hammering them together.

How long is welding training?

Because there are different paths to learning to weld, there’s no single timeline for welding training. Some people attend school part-time while working their current job, while others can focus full-time on their welding training courses. People interested in learning how to weld as a hobby can also take classes from professional welders, such as at KCMA & Services in Waterloo, Indiana.

Expect to take at least two years to go from welding newbie to American Welding Society Certified Welder. A junior college Certificate of Completion welding course is two semesters full-time, or 10 units of coursework. With this certificate, students are qualified for an apprenticeship or internship, rather than a full-time entry-level job. Welding apprenticeships range from 6,000 to 8,000 hours long, equalling three to four years at 2,000 hours per year. Some junior colleges, such as Cerritos College in the Los Angeles area, offer more in-depth welding programs that lead to different welding certifications, such as arc welding and tungsten gas arc welding. These take three to four semesters to complete, so you could be qualified for an entry-level job in about two years of full-time study. Alternatively, you can prepare for employment more quickly through an intensive vocational program at a trade school. For instance, Ohio’s Lincoln Electric Company offers a comprehensive program that prepares people for a welding career in just 20 weeks and 600 hours of hands-on instruction.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.
