Edwin and his crew did a phenomenal job planning, installing and putting the finishing touches on a fence for my backyard--I was very impressed and very happy with the results! After looking at different companies around the DMV area, I came across Edwin and immediately was impressed by previous jobs he had completed and the positive reviews. I contacted Edwin and he promptly came over to look at my yard and discuss options for me. He took exactly what I wanted, made a few professional recommendations and created exactly what I wanted! He and his crew were very professional, very helpful and communicated promptly, keeping me informed along the way. They made quick work of my new fence, very sturdy and stylish and exactly what I wanted. If you're in the DMV area and have a need for a fence or any other work, I'd recommend you give Edwin a look and see what he can do for you! Recommended highly and we were very happy with the results and experience!

Carlos did a wonderful job repairing multiple sections of our fence. Quality work, reasonable prices, reliability and availability are important to us and he provided that. He offers a variety of landscaping services, which is helpful for us too as we will need other jobs done in the future.

Ramiro and his team did a fantastic job on the stone patio and aluminum fence installation at our house. They were professional and meticulous and always went above exceptions on his work. I've already recommended him to several people who are looking for a landscaping/fence/patio pro. I will certainly hire Ramiro and his team again when I have a future need.

Sam and his team did an excellent job of "revitalizing" our deck and privacy fence. We wanted both the deck and fence power-washed, several pieces of broken or split wood replaced, gouges filled in and sanded, and stain applied. They arrived to do the job when they said they would and finished in three days. (Would have been sooner, but weather was a factor.) Sam even suggested a stain color that my husband and I both love. (We couldn't agree on a color!) The price was reasonable, especially considering the amount of work and care put into the job. We feel like we have a brand new deck! We will likely use his services again soon and would highly recommend to others.

So I don't think you should praise someone for doing what they say they are going to do. He and his helper showed up when they said they would, did the work faster than they said they would. Work looks great (repaired my fence). And it was a good value. More than fair. But I will give them all the stars but it is sad that today we have to expect something other than professionalism. I will use them again.

They have done excellent high quality work for me, on three tasks: building a white fence around my side yard, after removing an old metal fence; replacing the boards, railings, and one of the supporting posts of my back deck, and replacing my 50 year old cracked and sunken driveway and gravel-covered parking port with leveled cement. All of their work has impressed my neighbors, who are now asking for quotes for similar work. Wilson Construction are experienced, responsible, and quality-oriented, and very careful in understanding their customers wants and needs. I highly recommend them to anyone.

I found NFL while searching for a company to repair my wooden fence while waiting 6-8 weeks for Long Fence to install my vinyl fence. I ended up giving the contract to NFL and not only did they beat the price but I had a brand new fence installed within a week. Johnny addressed all of my concerns and the installation was seamless. I’d HIGHLY recommend speaking to NFL before dealing with any other fencing companies, I’ve already done the research for u trust me!... First review I’ve ever taken the time write! Trust me. JJ Contracting has been working on a number of projects in my neighborhood, including the house closest to mine. I felt it was a positive recommendation that they had so many jobs in this community that I hired them for several household projects that had been accumulating in my own home. These include replacing a garden fence post that had rotted out and was no longer stable, repairing a garden gate that was sagging so badly it could not be opened, and repairing a whole in the ceiling that had been cut a year ago to find a water leak. In each case, I was extremely pleased by the quality of their work, their professionalism, and their work ethic. They even take on small tasks along the way without charge. In fact, I am working with them now on designing a custom pedestal for my laundry room for a new washer and dryer which have nothing ready made available. That is testament indeed to the confidence I have in JJ Contracting. Susan Moos

Victor responded almost immediately to my quote and work request. He came by for the in-person review to give an exact quote for the work needed and showed up as promised on the day of the work. The end result of our fence repair is outstanding!! I highly recommend Victor and his company for any landscaping needs including fence repair, yard clean up and so on. His prices are more than fair and you really get your money's worth for an outstanding job. Victor is highly professional and very friendly and is in constant communication with the customer. Once again, an outstanding job from an outstanding company and person.

I was impressed with the work for the wood fence. He works with you even if you do not have all of the money. I would only advise that the fee for removing the old material to be more affordable, but he did lower mines. I may use him again for future projects. Suppose to come back and do my plants.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is welding training?

Because there are different paths to learning to weld, there’s no single timeline for welding training. Some people attend school part-time while working their current job, while others can focus full-time on their welding training courses. People interested in learning how to weld as a hobby can also take classes from professional welders, such as at KCMA & Services in Waterloo, Indiana.

Expect to take at least two years to go from welding newbie to American Welding Society Certified Welder. A junior college Certificate of Completion welding course is two semesters full-time, or 10 units of coursework. With this certificate, students are qualified for an apprenticeship or internship, rather than a full-time entry-level job. Welding apprenticeships range from 6,000 to 8,000 hours long, equalling three to four years at 2,000 hours per year. Some junior colleges, such as Cerritos College in the Los Angeles area, offer more in-depth welding programs that lead to different welding certifications, such as arc welding and tungsten gas arc welding. These take three to four semesters to complete, so you could be qualified for an entry-level job in about two years of full-time study. Alternatively, you can prepare for employment more quickly through an intensive vocational program at a trade school. For instance, Ohio’s Lincoln Electric Company offers a comprehensive program that prepares people for a welding career in just 20 weeks and 600 hours of hands-on instruction.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How many types of welding are there?

Welding is a method of fusing together two or more pieces of metal using electricity or flame. Welding is used to construct buildings, make metal sculptures, build and repair cars, make gates and furniture, and for many other practical and aesthetic uses. There are multiple types of welding. Here is an overview of the most popular methods:

  • Stick welding: Formally known as shielded metal arc welding, stick welding uses extreme heat applied at the seam of two separate metals to melt them together. A third (intermediary) metal may also be incorporated for added strength. As the metals cool, they are bonded together.
  • Metal inert gas (MIG) welding: Formally known as gas metal arc welding, MIG welding uses a tool to feed metal wire into the weld puddle while an electrical arc melts the wire, which will fuse to the base metal upon cooling.
  • Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding: Formally referred to gas tungsten arc welding, TIG welding is a similar process MIG welding, but instead of using a tool that continuously feeds metal wire into the weld puddle, the welder must hold and manually feed the stick.
  • Gas welding: A mix of flammable gas and oxygen is used to heat metal to the melting point.
  • Forge welding: Forging metal is an ancient art that involves heating two pieces of metal until they are molten, then hammering them together.
