I’m very happy with my new floors! Edwin submitted an estimate right away then came to my house to confirm the job. They did a terrific job removing the old carpet and base. Then installed new vinyl flooring and base mounding. I had the crazy idea that I would do all this myself. I’m so happy we hired Edwin, they completed the entire job including moving furniture in one day!!! I highly recommend. Very professional. They do an excellent job cleaning and making sure the job was completed satisfactory.

I hired Nilto to "finish" a room in my basement which we were turning into a gym. He framed half of a wall, hung drywall on two of the walls and the ceiling, installed an outlet, built a small custom railing, painted the drywall, and installed rubber flooring. Nilto took time to discuss the project and make recommendations based on his expertise. He even came back to our house to discuss the project with my wife and ensure she was comfortable with the plan. The project took a few days longer than expected (mostly due to uncontrollable things like drying plaster...etc) but was still finished in a reasonable timeframe. I had to point out a number of things that needed to be fixed (small things like some screws were sticking out, a few anchors in our concrete walls needed to be removed, the baseboards were a bit crooked), but Nilto took care of them quickly and send pictures to me throughout the project to be sure I was happy prior to returning home from work for the day. Overall, the price was excellent and at that price, I am very happy with the work Nilto did.

The whole experience was much better then I thought it would be. I had 6 separate areas replace consisting of hardwood, carpet, and ceramic tile. Ceramic tile demo was a particular challenge due to the method that it was installed. Took all day for the demo, but much to my surprise there was no damage to my kitchen cabinets. In addition to the flooring installation I had a set of stairs replaced and a custom set of stairs made. The flooring that was installed was called Newport Pine which has a range of colors that include light to dark browns and light to dark greys. The goal was to stain the oak stair pieces to match the pattern of the laminate flooring. I have no idea who does his custom staining, but he matched the flooring pattern/color almost exactly. No one that has seen the stairs can believe that someone hand stained these. The custom stairs that were made caused some headaches, but when the issues were shown to Peter he admitted to the issues and basically had is guys come back and redo the stairs at his cost. The standard that I hold a contractor to is if it not acceptable for their house why should I accept it in my house. Peter seems to live up to that standard.

Paul Langway and his team completed four jobs for us in three days- installing laminate kitchen tile, putting up a new shed door, removing and replacing rotting wood around a large window, and installing a ceiling light fixture. They were a very efficient team and paid close attention to detail, putting in long hours one day to finish the shed, even while it was dark out. The shed door especially looks amazing- better than the original, which was rotting at the bottom. Paul's flooring specialist is great. They took care of purchasing all of the materials and we refunded them at the end of the project. We felt completely comfortable having him and his team in and out of our home over the course of three days, and will be contacting him in the future for other projects.

Ricardo saved my tenants vinyl flooring that was left unfinished and messy by Rami Home Services guy who never showed up after 1 day and stole my money. I am so blessed that I found Ricardo on thumbtack, he is a very trustworthy, professional and punctual contractor. He performs the work with passion as if he is working at his own home. It is very hard to find a contractor like Mr Ricardo who is very honest, reliable, professional and especially the quality of work is stunning. I and my tenant was very pleased with his work. He is a true GEM and I will hire him in a blink of an eye and will highly recommend everybody to use Ricardo’s quality, reasonable services. I am just WOWED.

Saravia’s Remodeling did an awesome job refinishing my hardwood floors, fixing my ceiling where water damage had occurred, and my door trim where our dog had caused damage! The work was done at a great value and they took the time to add caulking to the exterior of my house where they found water to be leaking into the ceiling. I look forward to having them repair other things I need help with and would not hesitate to ask Saravia’s opinion on what the best way to fix something is. He showed me a few things and let me know about how many coats of polyurethane was needed after the floor refinishing. Great job guys thank you so much for all of your help!!!!

Patrick and his crew did an exceptional job refinishing and staining the 50-year old hardwood floor in my parents' house. They take great pride in their work, which was obvious from both their professional and conscientious demeanor before and during the work and the beautiful result after the work was completed. They explain what they are going to do and answer any questions you may have. I learned about flooring from them. I am planning to have them come back to re-do the kitchen linoleum flooring and re-carpet the den when we get to that point in the project. I highly recommend PM Services for all your flooring needs!

Oscar and his team did an outstanding job upgrading our basement in Fairfax, VA. Now our basement looks completely new. Oscar and his team removed old wooden panels and put in new dry walls in the basement. They removed old carpet and replaced it with the laminate flooring in the family room and the office. In addition, they painted the family room and the office. Every step of the project, Oscar kept us informed on what to expect next. The project was completed on time as promised. Oscar worked very hard to include scope and the details of the work to be performed, schedule and the cost in the contract before the work began The contract was very clear. If we have to hire Oscar, we will do it without any hesitation.

We used this company for carpet removal and laminate floor installation. Josias and his team were wonderful. They came to our house to measure and give us a free in home estimate, they were flexible with our schedule and were able to make suggestions to our project that helped a novice customer make good decisions! They were on time on install day and were efficient with their time. The floors look absolutely amazing and we are beyond happy! Even when we had one minor issue with a T-moulding strip, Josias came back promptly to make sure we were satisfied and fixed the minor complaint we had. On top of the great service he was competitively priced. We will be using them in the future when we redo floors in the rest of the house.

Everything about A and B was top notch. Francisco was fantastic with call responsiveness, getting answers to me quickly and coming when and where he said he was going to. His crew of guys did an amazing job prepping my concrete floor (commercial project) from the demo. It was like glass by the time they skim coated and repaired all the cracks. The transitions from vinyl to carpet is flawless. The price was more than reasonable as well. You can probably find a "contractor" to beat their (and probably anyone's) price but you get what you pay for. They weren't even the most expensive either. They were the middle guy and boy am I glad I went with the middle guy. Thank you so much Francisco! I can't recommend you enough.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
