We hired Xen Live for my mother in law's 80th birthday party. We had about 50 people and wanted to have live music to shake things up. Our DJ arrived on time (an hour before the party) to set up and do sound checks. We wanted oldies style of music given the audience and what he played was perfect. It was exactly what we wanted. I would highly recommend Xen Live for your special occasion.

Don knows his stuff, he's easy to get along with and overall a really nice guy. He has an impressive repertoire of musical skills and a lifetime of experience in music to draw from. As far as instruments he can play a little bit of everything, he can basically teach you any instrument you'd find in a regular rock band, folk, country, pop, blues etc. He's probably most proficient on the guitar and piano but he also knows quite a lot about vocals. If you struggle with theory he does a great job demystifying some of the fundamentals of music theory that are useful to beginners. Whether you're an absolute beginner or long time musician Don will be able to help you out. Highly recommend.

We had an engagement party for two of my kids (25/30) and it turned out great. Stevie was so accommodating and professional. People enjoy the ability to request songs from his extensive catalog. And I got to jam with him on two songs. I'll be sure to hire him again for future functions!

Kevin Jones has done incredible work with our ten-year old. Our son has only been taking lessons for four months, but he has already surpassed what the school orchestra is working on. Mr. Jones is really easy to reach if you need to cancel or reschedule, and uses an easy, pay-on-line system. Mr. Jones is so very mellow, and when my boy gets frustrated, he is amazing at bringing my son back to task. Lastly, imagine an accomplished, professional cellist playing duets with your child in your living room . . . It will bring tears to your eyes. Amy O'Donnell

From the first gig that I worked with Jay and Trackside, they treated me as part of the group as we worked together to create video and photos worthy of a first class regional band. He and the group have always had my requirements as a priority and keep me informed about the things necessary for me to function in My role with the band. Love working with these guys. One of the best local rock bands ever!!

I have used Alvin Smithson's services for over five years as a piano tuner, teacher and performer. I am always impressed with his skills, artistry and professionalism. Alvin first came to tune my 100-years old Steinway after it had been neglected for a number of years. He first examined the instrument, diagnosed what needed to be done and then proceeded with his expert tuning. Immediately after he was done and started playing, I was amazed at how good the piano sounded. Alvin explained that with a piano that hasn't been tuned or played in so many years, it will take some time to achieve its best form and sound for which it was built. A short time after, my wife started taking piano lessons from Alvin and as she started gaining proficiency in playing under his guidance, the piano itself gained a rich pleasing sound. Alvin paid close attention and adjusted notes or did a full tuning whenever needed. He also took the time to clean the strings and do minor technical adjustments. When a string needed to be replaced, Alvin recommended a technician from a highly reputable company. Overall, we owe it to his expertise to have the wonderful old piano do what it was built for by the Steinway masters. I should also mention that I heard some great musicians at venues where Alvin is the regular piano tuner. People who visit our house and hear our piano, or play it themselves, always compliment its sound. But the best comes when Alvin himself sits at the keyboard, whether at our house, at a social function or performing in the theater, it's such a joy to hear him play some great classical pieces as well as his own wonderful compositions. He is truly a very talented, sensitive and highly knowledgeable artist. And such a pleasant person, too. My wife and I feel fortunate to have Alvin give us the best piano sound to enjoy live music in our home. I would recommend him to anyone as piano tuner, teacher and overall musician.

About

Bad Influence, the premier Washington, DC band, has been playing their style of blues-infused, high-energy music since 1988. Ever-growing crowds turn out for the band's scorching hot and sinfully addicting shows, which are charged with a masterful blend of sensuously rough edges wrapped in soulful smoothness, riveting rock currents and potent shots of swing and American roots music. All this is signed, sealed and delivered in a suggestive, in-your-face style guaranteed to captivate even the most stoic of mind, body and spirit. The award-winning Bad Influence features Bob Mallardi on bass and vocals, Hohner endorsed artist Roger Edsall on harp and vocals, Epiphone endorsed artist Michael "Jr" Tash on guitar and vocals, and Sonor endorsed artist David Thaler on the drums.

Joel is an incredible teacher! He helped me and 2 other friends (who also take classes with him around the same time) to put together a band that was playing live shows after 6 months of lessons. All of us were completely novice musicians. He even learned how to play a new instrument, the Andean charango, so he could teach one of our band members how to incorporate it into our playing. Joel's lessons are fun and disciplined. Exactly the combination you want for making progress and staying invested in learning how to play your instrument.

I decided to start looking for a voice coach for my daughter Taylor in the fall of 2014. I asked friends and looked at reviews. I entered Sam Shin’s website and knew I had found her coach. His mission statement and choice of studio name touched my heart El Melody, “E” for everlasting and “L” for love – God’s Love. I immediately contacted him and set up an appointment. Mr. Sam greeted us with a warm smile and his signature hat. He sang a few bars while he played the keyboard, and it was honestly some of the sweetest music we’ve ever heard. Sam asked my daughter to sing so he could assess her needs. We discussed her goals musically and beyond. He made my daughter feel comfortable and we signed on. Sam began instruction with the fundamentals – defining types of breathing, breathing techniques and exercises, musical terminology, exposure to various genres of music, etc. It was weeks before actual singing began. Sam was first building a foundation. Then with encouragement and guidance he elicited the best out of Taylor. The year culminated in a rehearsal at a Grammy–winning recording studio and a tear jerker performance of “Beautiful” at Jammin Java with a live band. Each lesson with Sam feels like a spiritual experience. He is knowledgeable and exudes a love of music and people. Taylor’s life has been enriched by Sam’s mentorship.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
