We had a great experience with Nuhome remodeling and specifically Tony and Guy Who were our project managers. They were very responsible, knowledgeable, accessible and responsive. We just purchased an old house and had a lot of items with a lot of details. Tony patiently took care of all our needs and helped us turn our dreams ideas into cost-effective doable items within the budget we specified. Thank you Tony Our project included 1200 square feet room and bathroom addition, kitchen & bathroom remodeling, roof and window replacement, complete electric re-wiring and re-piping and many more items. My husband and I interviewed 7 companies for our project. We highly recommend Tony, Guy & Nuhome RemodelingSee more

I hired Oro Coast Builders to do some remodeling work in both our bathrooms (create a master bathroom and extend our other bathroom). In all honestly, I couldn't be happier with my decision. As construction started in the middle of the pandemic and lockdown, I was worried my project would be significantly impacted. To my surprise, my bathrooms were completed in a very reasonable timeframe. The Oro Coast Builders team rolled with the punches and adjusted scheduling as necessary to keep my remodel on track. I'm so appreciative of our project coordinator for his responsiveness and attention to detail, despite all the uncertainty at the time. Any issues that arose, he handled promptly and professionally. The work crew was fantastic and everyone was very friendly. My bathrooms look amazing! I'm so thrilled to have chosen Oro Coast Builders to work on my little historic home!See more

The kitchen and bathroom of our 1950’s era home was in bad need of renovation after so many years of use. Bay Builders and Remodeling, Inc. came forth as providing a “one-stop-shop” of services and expertise which are required to perform such a renovation. Isaac, our project manager, was a very enthusiastic yet pragmatically realistic representative for his company. He guided us through our wishes for the kitchen and bathroom while keeping us grounded in terms of good design, code restrictions, space, and financial limitations. Through his company, he assigned the various sub-contractors to perform the necessary work effectively and efficiently. Dealing with a home of this age, one needs to realize that when the walls are removed, one often finds unexpected difficulties. Isaac was not the kind of contractor that “sugar coats” adverse situations — he was forthcoming, told us the grim news in face to face, while directing our strict attention to any health issues, current building code requirements, and protecting the over-all investment issues of our property. Isaac has a strong sense of ethics and responsibility towards his customers. He takes his job very seriously and he believes that the customer comes first: he is there to help them with their wishes — no matter how difficult that they might become at times.See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do general contractors offer remote or virtual services?

General contractors perform manual work and typically need to be present to complete their projects. However, if you come across a profile that states the contractor is offering remote services, ask what those services include. You can also ask if they can perform a consultation via video call and if they can do the job while following guidelines from the CDC and local agencies.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
