I could not seem to score well on the ACT. I ended up with Arbor Tutors and had a tutor who met me every week for 8 weeks and when I took the test and got an excellent score (33). Worth every cent.

Alex helped my daughter prepare for the SAT when she was a junior. He was great! My daughter is a good student, but has severe test anxiety, especially about whether she will finish on time. Alex taught her test taking strategies to help her answer as many questions as possible and had a calm demeanor that worked wonders for her. She ended up exceeding our goal for her score! Thanks :)

Dale was a great ACT tutor, especially when it came to teaching an international student the ins and outs of the Reading and Writing sections. Since we started working two weeks before the test date, Dale laid out a great strategy of drilling practice tests and helped us find our weak points to review. He had a great base of resources and experience to help us not only with tactics and test taking skills, but how we could apply these study techniques to a broad range of tests and classes.

I am a senior at American University and first contacted Bill to help me prep for the math portion of the GRE. I experienced a jump of over 10 points on my math portion after working with Bill! Bill is an awesome tutor. He is flexible and quick to respond to changes in my busy schedule. He is also high energy and makes the process exciting! It was apparent during our first lesson that Bill really has a passion for teaching mathematics.

Barbara has helped my (now 14)-year old with math for going on three years now. Algebra I, Geometry and preparing for several big exams. She is always ready to help with whatever questions come up for him in his classes, prepare for tests, go back over old material to strengthen knowledge, or just celebrate fun things about math. It takes a very versatile mind to teach this well with the changing needs we bring her from one week to the next. We have really appreciated her ability to jump in to help with a sticky question and even consult on a detail by phone if needed. We highly recommend Barbara for math support.

Jessica and her team at Modern Muse Education are sincere, intelligent, and professional. Their new Gaithersburg facility is wonderful and provides students with a comfortable place to get test help (she even provides snacks!). Jessica and her team are not only extremely patient and educated on the test themselves, but also connect the testing content to public and private school curriculums, customizing a student’s test prep course based on their current grade level and course schedule. The course provides students with everything they need to succeed on the test, as well as how to evaluate their test scores to identify what they need to improve on future tests. I 100% reccomend Modern Muse Education for all students in need of SAT/ACT prep!

Andrew Sun To whomever this concerns, Before I signed up with this tutoring program, I was not very good academically. In fact, I was the worst in the toolshed. Knowing that I have no time to lose and my bleak future is upon me, I did what many people think it's best; To join the military. I didn't know what to expect of the navy to be honest, so I was unaware of the test you need to take called the asvab. My heart sank a little. I began searching on the Internet, looking for a tutor (especially on math) until I found out about Theo. Theo is the CEO for student circle and unlike other tutors; he is the only one that stood out. He is understanding, ambitious, and kind, but most importantly he can relate to you, creating a special bond which prompts you to succeed. So I explained to him my situation and he set me up with another tutor by the name of Xin. Right off the bat both of us got along and he helped me through two grueling months. There were times when I wanted to give up, but he was there for me. The funny thing is, he is going through an exam as well during my time with him, so he is the hardest working tutor I have ever came across. I swear, these two do actually care about me because when I took the asvab, I scored high enough to achieve some of the most coveted jobs the navy has to offer! These two will forever be part of my family. Student circle has the best sessions as well as memories. Thank you. Andrew

Mary worked with my son (a sophomore in high school) for nine weeks, and the change in my son's confidence with writing improved significantly. Starting in first grade he developed a dislike for writing, which over the years turning into almost a phobia. He was so intimidated by the process, that he would rather fail than turn in an essay. As a result, he never really learned HOW to write, and his anxiety increased. Mary worked with him, starting with the basics of how to map out and organize a persuasive essay. What took him hours before, he was able to accomplish in less than half an hour. It was very empowering, and helped him considerably with facing writing tasks. One thing that I didn't expect with a writing tutor was Mary's incorporation of subtle life coaching. She had him examine his motivations and his goals. They even did personality testing. I think it was very eye-opening for him to have the chance to look at himself from a different vantage point. Her approach is very supportive and validating. She knows what to ask to make you (both the student and the parent) feel important and interesting. Finally, one of the things I appreciated most as a parent, was that she sent me an email after every session detailing what they had done and explaining her plans for the next session. I can't recommend her highly enough.

Not only Brendan was always prepared to teach, but he was very patient with my niece and was able to breakdown each lesson in a way that made it easy for my niece to understand. He is reliable and very professional. I would definitely recommend Brendan to anyone who is looking for SAT prep classes.

My daughter was recently tutored by Sam for a college pre-cal/trig summer school course. The pace was fast and by the time we called Sam, she was in the fifth of her sixth week. By week 5 her grades were taking a downward spiral as the material was getting more complex. She was teetering on the precipice with a C-. After one intense week of working with Sam she finished with a B. He worked magic. He was patient and and an excellent teacher .I initially worried that he would be "too qualified" to tutor the course, but he was able to explain math to my rising sophomore college daughter, who has always struggled with the subject. He was the best math tutor my daughter has ever had. And a very nice man.

Mrs. Barber tutored my daughter in 6th grade math this past year. My daughter was struggling with math basics. Within the first week her confidence was up and her grades improved. She made the honor roll the last three quarters. Although her math grade has improved overall, Mrs. Barber still tutors her as we prepare for 7th grade and the high school placement test. My daughter adores her. She makes math fun. I highly recommend her. She has changed my daughter's perception of math, at the same time building confidence in herself.

Excellent ACT/SAT tutor I was referred Dr. Reetika by another mom from my sons class. She truly helped shape his career. She helped my son to prepare both for ACT and SAT to identify which works better for him. In the end my son took both the exams and did well on them. There were times that I had difficulty keeping him accountable but Reetika had a good balance of being a tutor and sounding board for my advice. I recommend Reetika to anyone needing help in test prep or honors classes of their kid

While we are still waiting on the final scores for both of our daughter's SAT test, Les provided what we asked him to do, with the wisdom of a father and instructor and that was "how to handle the questions you don't know the answer to." We had a limited time to prepare for the test and Les was able to cover a lot of ground. Hiring him one on one, enabled us to adjust his teaching and customize to the needs of our daughters. He also proved to be a good sounding board for us as we worked the system. I would be happy to provide a recommendation for Les.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

    What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

    • English
    • Science understanding and reasoning
    • Math
    • Reading
    • Writing essay (optional)

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.
