Jenrri was a pleasure to work with! He removed a granite backsplash and installed tile for our kitchen backsplash and front of our kitchen island. Jenrri was communicative throughout the process and professional. We’re 100% happy with his work and the process (and we’re annoyingly particular people!).

Cannot say enough good things about Erick. We had him tile and grout a kitchen wall in subway tile, in a herringbone pattern--which is NOT easy! From the get-go, he was so responsive to any questions we had. From the initial email, his knowledge base was obvious, and we knew we would be getting someone that really knew his stuff. He arrived on time every day, was super communicative throughout the process, and even helped us out in picking up some things he knew would make the finished product that much better. His eye and attention to detail is truly demonstrated by our fantastic finished product. Do your project a favor, and go with the guy that appreciates quality over a quickly-done product! Would hire Erick for another project in a heartbeat. I will upload pics of the kitchen soon!

We absolutely loved working with José and his team to tile our basement floor with ceramic wood-looking tile, expose a brick wall, and install new toilet and a wall-mounted sink. He works FAST and within budget. Extra things we needed done were added at very reasonable extra expense ($40-60 to repair an unexpected drywall hole behind a mirror). His team does beautiful work, and José made sure every bit of trash or demo material was taken away. They also went above and beyond to make things look nice. For example, I don't think they charged me extra when they plastered around our baseboards and it looks soooo much better! They also patched a little hole left by a past electrician's job. They took extra good care of our space as if it was their own home. We also like that he respected our desire to further finish our space ourselves ( we are ok with doing our own painting). I can't say enough good things. We will definitely hire José and Brandon Contracting for our next job.

John recently came to my house to inspect a tiling job and give me an estimate. He helped verify that I indeed had a plumbing issue instead of tile issue, and gave me a reference for a plumbing service. He was prompt, responsive and all around pleasant to interact with. I’ll be hiring John to help with my drywall needs after the plumber resolves my water leak.

Months ago, I looked for someone to do a small painting project on Thumbtack. And I ended up with a brand new home. Christian, Jessica, Hector and the rest of the team at 5th Gen Group honestly do miracles. We own a 100+ year old row home in Washington DC and we've had problems ever since we moved in five years ago. After dealing with four different contractors that left me unsatisfied, I tried Thumbtack (at that time, new in the DC area). Christian came out to do an estimate and I was impressed by him from the get go - as a woman, I hate when contractors act like I'm stupid or uninformed. Christian never did that, and he answered all my questions respectfully and thoroughly and would defer to my wishes. We initially contracted for a gut remodel of our ancient kitchen and leaking bathroom. Christian's professional opinion was heavily appreciated as well as his vision - he instantly "got" the feel of a space and spent a lot of time listening to not only what we wanted, but how we would use the space and what we planned for the house in the future. Of course, the best laid plans always go awry - we knew our house had a few "handyman specials" but once Christian opened up the floor in the kitchen, we realized we were really in for it. Down there was a hidden mess of rotting wires, missing piping, garbage from the last renovations, and rotted-out beams. Overnight, our budget doubled. I personally wanted to die. But Christian calmly lead us through the process, helped us try to salvage our murdered budget, and focused on explaining the trade-off in home values. We ended up with an additional half bath downstairs (because really, what was another 5K at that point?), brand new kitchen (with a small bar!) a brand new stairwell and relocated laundry room, and a brand new bathroom with a shower (after 5 years of an ancient leaking cast iron tub). Christian isn't completely perfect - he's totally a perfectionist, and if you are one too, be prepared for some long conversations. There is an epic texting exchange over the bathroom tile that I may print out just to see how long it really was. But that's about the only thing. Also, for the other ladies on here- I always hate opening my home to someone because I have had bad experiences with contractors who were, at best, creepy. Christian and Hector were completely professional, and they really went the extra mile to make sure I always knew who would be in the house, when they would arrive, and how to reach both of them. Christian also has a lot of loyalty and integrity toward his clients - he is always fair, both in pricing and in the treatment of your home. He broke a small appliance - the only reason I knew was because he called me when he was purchasing an (upgraded) replacement on his own dime. All renovations are hard projects, long projects, and frequently frustrating. There was definitely a day when I wanted to kill Christian for sending me out to two different quarries in far out Virginia right around rush around. But when I stepped into my home for the first time, I couldn't stop smiling. And when we finally scrape together the budget for a third floor extension, I know exactly who I am calling.

I cannot say enough good things about RB Construction (Remberto and his crew) on their work during our kitchen relocation. Honest, fair, reasonable price, quick and resourceful. You cannot beat their prices. I tried to on drywall, cabinet installation, painting, carpentry finish and tile work and nobody came close To make a long story short, I had him out to bid on patching drywall after electrician ran wiring and ending up hiring Remberto to finish the entire kitchen. We live in a house built in the 1930s and moved our old galley kitchen to the family room. Remberto and crew did a beautiful job on the tile work to include all the difficult subflooring work. They also did an excellent job on drywall and smoothing out transition with old plaster. Finally, they did an amazing job on installation of kitchen cabinets despite the fact that none of the walls were square or the ceiling level, as well as the custom installation of a 300 lb. country sink. They are true craftsmen! I wish I would have found Remberto when I start my remodel job. He would have saved me time, money and headaches.

Juan did a fantastic job of replacing tiles that had broken on the kitchen floor. I had given up hope that anyone could make the floor look like new again, but Juan came in and for a very reasonable price, performed miracles. :) He even went the extra mile and went down to the store to get the correct adhesive. I had purchased the wrong one. I am totally impressed with his professionalism and expertise. He arrived when he said he would and my kitchen looks terrific now. Thank you Juan. If they had 6 Golden Stars, I would give you the extra one. You are amazing. Eileen McKinney

We've used Buckeye Construction a couple of times now. John has been very accommodating for timing and logistical issues in dealing with our schedules. The work has been done on time, within budget, and met/exceeded our expectations. We've primarily used him for painting and wall issues, but we have seen his work (e.g., flooring & carpentry) elsewhere and the same level professionalism and quality was present. We would not hesitate to use his services again.

Peter came across as very knowledgeable about flooring. We hired him to install tile flooring in our basement. He was responsive and easy to communicate with. He provided us various samples, and went over all the details and decisions that we needed to make. The job was done in a timely manner and the end result looked beautiful. We encountered a challenge once the installation began, as the wrong tile was being installed. He immediately told us he would remediate. However, we chose to go through with the installation of the different tile, which turned out to be to our liking, and he provided us a significant discount to make up for the mistake. Despite this hiccup, we were very happy with the service, with his professional response to the problem, and with the end result. We would definitely hire him again for future flooring projects and enthusiastically recommend him.

Paul Langway and his team completed four jobs for us in three days- installing laminate kitchen tile, putting up a new shed door, removing and replacing rotting wood around a large window, and installing a ceiling light fixture. They were a very efficient team and paid close attention to detail, putting in long hours one day to finish the shed, even while it was dark out. The shed door especially looks amazing- better than the original, which was rotting at the bottom. Paul's flooring specialist is great. They took care of purchasing all of the materials and we refunded them at the end of the project. We felt completely comfortable having him and his team in and out of our home over the course of three days, and will be contacting him in the future for other projects.

Stuart Richardson from Scottie Contracting has done a lot of work for us over the past 10 years or so, to include the total remodeling of two masters bathrooms (different houses); installation of a couple of tile floors; installation of a wood floor; repair of a broken water pipe; repair of damaged drywall; electrical wiring; installation of a water heater; deck repair; and a lot of painting. He has always been very cooperative and professional, and has always been reasonably priced. My Wife and I would highly recommend Stuart to anyone needing any type of home repair or construction.

Yong and his crew were amazing. We replaced the cheap wood with large tile on the entire first level. The job included pulling up the wood which was glued down and installing the tile which had previously purchased. Yong responded to my request for an estimate on the same day came by to look at the job and provided an estimate well below others. The job actually became a lot more involved than expected but he kept to his original estimate and did a great job. We'd definitely use him again and recommend him for any of tile and backsplash needs!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

  • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
    • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
  • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

For more on how to remodel a bathroom and bathroom tiling check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.
