Chef Serge was eager to please and worked with us throughout the planning process to design a menu that captured our vision for a family wedding dinner. He worked around a number of dietary needs (gluten free and vegetarian options), incorporated vegetables from our garden into several of the recipes, and he even adapted some of the recipes for the kids. The food and service were excellent!

We loved working with Denean for our December 2017 wedding! Denean had lots of insight and advice for us. She guided us through all the details for our reception and provided resources to ensure that nothing was missed. Our reception venue came together flawlessly due to the work of Denean and her team. We absolutely loved our wedding and could not thank Denean and her team enough for all the coordination, advice, and help throughout the day.

Maribel was a delight to work with. The whole process of getting our wedding reception planned and executed was seamless. We did not use a wedding planner (we're a couple of retirees!) and wanted a simple but elegant evening, and Maribel delivered. There was an abundant selection of menu choices, and we had the opportunity to attend a tasting session. Our guests raved about how good the food was, and we were pleased with the service, the lovely set-up of the tables, and the professionalism of the staff. Many thanks to her and Noel and their crew.

I was in desperate need of a Caterer for my wedding and about 4 months before our big day, October 4, 2014, I found Mrs. Patricia Wright online. I read prior reviews on Ms. Wright and also interviewed other caterers, but after she invited my then future husband and me to test her food, I knew I had to have her for my wedding. Ms. Wright is honest, professional, personable and a JOY to work with. I trusted her and knew that I did not have to worry any longer. Not only is she professional, but, her food is "out of this world". She worked beyond expectations and everyone at my wedding gave compliments on how well the event took place and how delicious the food was. I can not thank Mrs. Wright enough for the outstanding job she did for our wedding.

Jacqueline was absolutely wonderful! I hired her to help me with the last few weeks of my wedding planning. Not only did she serve as a POC for the vendors a few weeks before the wedding so my husband and I didn’t have to worry about anything, but she did day-of management of the event. There were several times during the wedding ceremony and reception when she jumped into action. For example, she alerted the DJ when he played the wrong song for the groom and sister dance, and walked him through the Mr. and Mrs. Game. She also provided guidance during our dress rehearsal to make sure the ceremony would be just as we wanted. Jacqueline is super professional, extremely friendly, and a great listener! I would recommend her to anyone for wedding planning or any other event.

It was such a pleasure working with Eleven Courses. As the wedding planner, I hired them based upon my client's taste to be our premier caterer for a tented wedding reception at Glenview Mansion on April 11, 2015. Eleven Courses not only worked with me throughout the whole process, (i.e. tasting, contract, and walkthrough at the venue) they were always very responsive to my questions. In all honesty, their blend of professionalism and friendliness immediately made me feel like I was part of their team. The day of the event, Eleven Courses went above and beyond to ensure that everything was perfectly executed. They arrived on time, helped to set up the table linens, plates, glasses, etc. contracted out by the tent company. The presentation of the food was immaculate. The food not only looked great, it was delicious. As well, the food was more than enough to accommodate the guest count. The guests raved all night about the cocktail hour hors d'oeuvres in the mansion, and the main entrees served during the reception. Clean up was also perfectly executed by Eleven Courses. Their staff of servers were excellent and very helpful, and our tandem coordination made things seamless. I am so excited to work with Eleven Courses again, and cannot wait to recommend them to my future clients. They will for sure be one of my premiere catering vendors! I was beyond pleased as a vendor, and individual. I am all about customer service and they are outstanding. Eric & Chrissy are beyond great, and down-to Earth individuals to work with. They also go out of their way to ensure that your vision for food at your event is executed. A big thank you! If you are looking for professionalism, quality food, and a great quantity give them a try, you won't be disappointed. They were such a blessing! -Josephine (wedding planner at www.1-stopplanning.com)

Megan made a beautiful and delicious, three-tiered wedding cake for me. Even before we met, Megan helped us decide how much cake we needed to serve our guests. We tried out several flavor combinations at the tasting, and picked our favorites for the different tiers. We didn't have a particular cake design in mind, and Megan showed us several different photos and helped us design our cake. The cake was delivered to Alexandria, VA and set up while my fiance and I were getting ready, the only surprise was how smoothly everything went. I'm definitely going back to Megan for my anniversary cake!

We can not express into words the phenomenon job that Extravagant Affairs did for our wedding on 11/05/2016. From the time that we chose them to handle our catering needs to the very end of our special day, their team handled every detail with the highest level of class and commitment. Our guests are still talking about the excellent food selection. If you are looking for elegance, price affordability, and professionalism, I would definitely recommend them

When my now wife and I set out to plan our wedding, we were one of those couples who thought hiring a planner was unnecessary. We had roughly 6 months to pull it off. We fancy ourselves as reasonably intelligent and financially responsible people and we thought that was plenty of time. Fast forward 4 months. The stress began to mount and panic had set in. Our budget is dwindling. We broke down and decided to hire a day-of coordinator. Better late than never, but who do we call? Every one we spoke to was either way too expensive or not the right fit personality wise. Thanks to Thumbtack, we found Vanessa. We are incredibly happy we did and we couldn't have pulled off our awesome wedding without her. Here's just a few of the reasons why: 1) Attitude - She has the PERFECT demeanor for event planning. She kept us on track, but was never pushy. Very personable and easy to talk to. Every time we spoke to her we felt both at ease and motivated to check more off of our list. 2) Creativity - Simply put she has great ideas. Whether it was decor, logistics, floor planning, etc., she listened to our inputs (which weren't always in lockstep - welcome to married life) but put here own spin on things. Our wedding was weeks ago and we still are getting comments on how beautiful everything was. 3) Contacts - Vanessa made great recommendations for vendors, and didn't do so based on any kickbacks or financial gain to herself. In fact, we had one vendor who was somewhat flaky that we had already booked. She was able to line up a "just in case" vendor for us. 4) Organization - Nothing fell through the cracks and she thought of small details we didn't have the capacity to (because we were too busy being crazy pants). 5) Value - She is worth every penny and I would argue she is a bargain for the service she provides. This is especially in comparison to other planners out there. If you need help planning an event, not just a wedding, we highly suggest you reach out to Vanessa @ Little Black Book. You absolutely will not regret it.

International catering and Events really pulled out all the stops to make the wedding I attended an event for the ages. Customer satisfaction must be a priority because everything was spectacularly done. They added a personal touch to the event that made it extra special and all guests had to do was sit back, relax and enjoy!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
