Antonio did a very good job of repainting my first floor unit. He was quick to respond to my thumbtack request and provided a very reasonable quote. The unit had lots of dated wood trim that had been coated with many layers of poly. Antonio, did a good job of painting them white and giving a modern look to the whole house. He also painted the kitchen cabinets white to give it a more updated look and feel. He was very easy to work with and flexible in working around my other contractor’s schedules. I won’t hesitate to use him again in the future.

Everything you could ask for and more! I usually never write reviews, but when it comes to hiring people and it companies to do work I felt important to share. We all know how difficult it is to find a good contractor. Elsayed came out on a Sunday and worked tirelessly until the job was done. Installed 3 toilets, dishwasher, garbage disposal, 2 faucet fixtures. Also corrected numerous plumbing issues in the process. From start to finish he let me know what was going on every step of the way. His recommendations were spot on as he came across other issues throughout the project. I always felt confident everything would get done right and did it ever! Never strayed from the up front and honest pricing. I’ve already rehired Elsayed to do more work in my home as OSA is a full service general contractor. Hire with absolute confidence!!!

Manny and his crew are professional, reliable, courteous , honest etc. I can’t say enough kind things about Dubon Flooring. Manny was the 3rd company I hired to refinish the same floor. The first two contractors PNP flooring and Pro R both from Thumbtack did a horrific job and Manny was hired to correct their work. Third times a charm. The floors look as good as they can with what he had to work with. The finish is impeccable! I only wish we hired Dubon Flooring to start instead of paying three contractors for the same end result. Moral of my story, HIRE DUBON FLOORING if you want the job done correctly the first time and his prices are actually extremely competitive. STAY FAR AWAY FROM PRO R FLOORING and PNP FLOORING from Melrose MA. I personally would never hire another floor Contractor except for Dubon Flooring , thank you so much for all your hard work Manny.

I had a small repair job that I needed done on my carpet. I had a really hard time finding someone who was willing to do such a small repair. Thankfully, Shawn Selden from Sharp Skill Floor Coverings saved the day! He came out to my home and took care of the repair, no problem. He was an incredibly nice guy! very courteous and honest. Shawn was upfront on pricing and was very reasonable. I will most definitely hire him again and also recommend Sharp Skill Floor Covering to any friends, family, or anyone who needs a flooring project done. Clearly, no job is too small...Thanks Shawn!

Peter was extremely responsive from beginning to end. He was able to provide us with a quote at our on-site visit to our home where we were looking to get the downstairs floors stained a darker color as well as ripping out rugs from 2 rooms upstairs, staining, poly. They look absolutely amazing and changed the entire feel of the house in a matter of 4 days from quote to finish! We highly recommend and will use him and his team again for any flooring projects. Also important - very competitively priced!

We recently hired Lan's Floor Care to installed hard wood floors in 2 upstairs rooms in our small cape house. From start to finish the experience working with Lan was pleasant and very professional. He was polite and very professional as he measured our space and discussed the options for the wood floor we wanted installed. We choose a pre-finished 3 1/4 inch red oak natural finish floor which Lan Flooring installed as promised in 2 days. The 2 rooms and the small hallway in between them were covered with wall to wall carpeting. In 2 days, our upstairs space was transformed because of the beautiful wood floor that installed by Lan. The quality of the wood product is excellent and Lan's expertise in installing the floor is evident in how well the floor was laid out. Hard working, honest, very clean and careful while working, and his price is very fair, Lan's Flooring is a contractor I highly recommend. We do intend to use him again in the future.

Justin did a nice job replacing some exterior trim on my home. He was professional and patient, and willing to explain the specifics of the project. His work was excellent and the cost was reasonable. He paid particular attention to the small details. Justin was methodical and didn’t rush through the job like some contractors. Also, unlike many contractors, Justin is not afraid of climbing. I would highly recommend Justin to a friend for exterior trim repair or replacement.

Where do I begin. Wilson was hired to install new Pergo flooring throughout the 900+ sq. feet of my home. From the outset, he was responsive and professional in his responsiveness and providing a quote. The installation was flawless, his attention to detail impeccable and his approachable personality just made everything better. In short, a professional, hard worker, class act and a good man. The job could not have gone better. I recommend Wilson without any reservation whatsoever.

I sent in my request at midnight and the next day in the morning they were here and said they could actually do three out of three projects where I thought they only could do two out of three projects. They were so nice and did great work very polite and very reasonable Replace basement windows fixed lag bolts under the deck and did some roofing work. I'm selling the house and the new buyer wanted all of this done and for years I've been trying to find someone just to do the basement windows Good people. Good job. Good price. And right on time. What more could you ask for?

As a frequent Thumbtack user, I've had a lot of contractors work on my house including other painters. Cleynira Construction and the owner Cody are by far the best we've ever used. They painted the outside of our 1950 colonial and it looks fantastic!! Cody also used his construction skills to remedy some tricky wood rot in some decorative detailing areas near that I thought would be very difficult to fix. If you want superior quality work at a very competitive price, I highly recommend these guys. I'm extremely happy with their work and I will rehire them at every opportunity.

We hired M&M to paint our guest house. It was formerly an office and most of the walls were covered in a tacky wallpaper. When our contractors were finished, M&M came and transformed the entire house from top to bottom. They had to do a lot of repairs, caulking, and trim work, prime, and then apply 2 layers of paint, but they never stopped working from the time they were hired until the job was completed. I was completely shocked when I saw the work they did around the window hardware, it was as though not a drop of paint ended up where it didn't belong. They also took care of our brand new floors to make sure they did not get scratched, or any paint on them. Their employees worked wonderfully, did not need any supervision, and they were courteous and professional. Monica and Marco are the owners and were some of the nicest people we have hired for jobs such as these. We will absolutely be hiring them again, and we recommend them above all others for your painting needs.

Paul and his crew did a really nice job with remodeling our kitchen. Most important, they showed up when they said they would, were sensitive to cost containment, and were very responsive and open to feedback. Paul seems to legitimately care about his business and reputation, and came back to address very small things that we noticed later, which is a rarity given our experiences with the broader base of contractors that we’ve used in the past. We’ll be hiring him again to renovate a bathroom given how easy he has been to work with.

We hired Greg to demo existing and install a new kitchen floor when our existing contractor failed to meet a critical deadline that would have thrown off the rest of our project sequencing. Within 2 days of posting the ad on Thumbtack, Greg visited our home, provided a VERY reasonable quote, and agreed to begin work the following Monday, which is what we desperately needed! To say that Greg was professional and responsive would be a gross understatement. In fact, we never even spoke on the phone -- almost all communication was done via text and email (we were away when this all happened!). He was prompt, courteous, BEYOND EASY to work with, and all-in-all a total pro!! His team was respectful and trustworthy, and our floors look gorgeous. If I could give him 6 stars, I would!! :-)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
