I used Nate's tax preparation services to file my return this year and I was very pleased with the quality of the service. He is very professional and knowledgeable, and was able to explain things in a way that was easy to understand. I've previously only filed taxes on my own using TurboTax, and this was a much better experience!

Ron is great! made the whole process very simple and he was very easy to work with back and forth. He double checked the return and made sure we were getting the most out of our tax return this year. I was going to file my own taxes year to year but he saved me time, headache and money at a reasonable cost so i might just have to seek him out again for next year!

Matt and his staff were great! He really came through for me in resolving my IRS problem. I still can't believe we settled over $200,000 of tax debt for just $7,400. I would highly recommend Matt's tax firm to anyone having an IRS or state tax problem.

I cannot say enough about the staff at Schramek and Associates. They are very thorough and I have complete peace of mind that my taxes are being done accurately. Karl is able to advise me on future tax planning and preparations, which not all tax preparers are willing or skilled enough to perform. As long as they are in business, I will be a loyal client.

These guys are really smart and run a top class professional service. I’ve been using them for years as my dedicated accounting and audit firm. I am a serial entrepreneur and started a number of business projects. Some of them failed, while others have been more successful and turned into profitable concerns. Obviously, I’ve had my run with the IRS and tax services. They seem to believe that I am making millions of dollars every year and rolling in money. They slammed me with notices of taxes due for the three companies worth more than $158,109. Luckily I’ve been working the experts at Legacy Tax Resolution. We all had a good laugh about the tax bills and then I let them handle the negotiations with the IRS. The tax agency later dropped the notices. Quite effective.

      About

Most economists, especially neoclassical economists, argue that all taxation creates market distortion and results in economic inefficiency. They have therefore sought to identify the kind of tax system that would minimize this distortion. Recent scholarship suggests that in the United States, the federal government effectively taxes investments in higher education more heavily than it subsidizes higher education, thereby contributing to a shortage of skilled workers and unusually high differences in pre-tax earnings between highly educated and less educated workers. Governments use different kinds of taxes and vary the tax rates. This is done to distribute the tax burden among individuals or classes of the population involved in taxable activities, such as business, or to redistribute resources between individuals or classes in the population. Historically, the nobility were supported by taxes on the poor; modern social security systems are intended to support the poor, the disabled, or the retired by taxes on those who are still working. In addition, taxes are applied to fund foreign aid and military ventures to influence the macroeconomic performance of the economy (the government's strategy for doing this is called its fiscal policy; see also tax exemption) or to modify patterns of consumption or employment within an economy, by making some classes of transaction more or less attractive. A nation's tax system is often a reflection of its communal values and the values of those in current political power. To create a system of taxation, a nation must make choices regarding the distribution of the tax burden who will pay taxes and how much they will pay and how the taxes collected will be spent. In democratic nations where the public elects those in charge of establishing the tax system, these choices reflect the type of community that the public wishes to create. In countries where the public does not have a significant amount of influence over the system of taxation, that system may be more of a reflection on the values of those in power.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

      • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
      • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
      • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
      • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
