Eric and team did a phenomenal job, showing up to evaluate the work to be done, providing an affordable estimate, and even doing the work right on the spot. He was in and out within 2.5 hours and the new plumbing for my tub ... well let's just say the tub has never drained so fast in the time I've owned my home. Would use Eric again and encourage anyone else to go with him for your plumbing job.

I found Jaragua Home Services on Thumbtack and have been very happy with the work they have now done for me both residential and commercial projects. My husband and I hired them to do a gut renovation of 2 -1925 bathrooms in our condo-- not an easy task. We had plumbing to move, thick plaster walls, serious electric updates, and lots of tiling. Adelson and his crew were very helpful with ideas to make the bathrooms look and function more beautiully. His crew cleaned up daily, and midway he sent in a professional cleaning crew. We were able to live through the renovations even with one of the bathrooms being the master. We were so delighted with the service and results that we hired them to do pointing and brick work for us on a commercial building. I look forward to continuing to use his services for my third bathroom, and other projects.

Carlos was awesome! He always showed up when he said he would, his price is very reasonable and i felt very comfortable with him in our house alone while we were at work! He did a major kitchen/bath remodel for us on our very old house which could have been a nightmare but he was able to clean up old wiring and install new in a timely, cost effective manor. He will be our go to electrician in the future!

Cezar and Robson did absolutely first class work. Robson did a floor tile, toilet, vanity, and mirror replacement in our small master bath and Cezar did a full carpet/tile removal and installation of vinyl flooring in our finished basement area and refinishing of our stairwell. The results came out very nice. However, their work did have some rough edges. They were not prepared to isolate their work from the rest of the house and residual dust from the floor removal/finishing ended up covering everything in the rest of the home. They were also somewhat careless in treatment of the home, leaving some stains/unfinished areas. While they were receptive to my requests, I feel more could have been done to care for the home during/after the work completion. We had to almost entirely clean up after them at the end of the day. That said, the price was fair, they did a great job (other than cleaning), and they provided a prompt and detailed quote which is hard to come by these days.

Eduardo and his team did a great job of turning my half bath into a full bath with a standup shower. I really appreciated being able to turn to his team for advice and guidance throughout the process and rely on their expertise in making the right decisions. It was also easy to discuss my own specific ideas and and have them come out looking great. Any miscommunication was always quickly resolved. Things will definitely take longer than you expect, so best to allot extra time, but in the end, it turned out exactly how I wanted. The tile-work in particular is fantastic, and everyone one his team is great to work with! I'm very pleased with the final result, and would be happy to work with Boston Best Construction on future projects.

Ricky and his team were a pleasure to work with. As a first time home owner, I was nervous about starting such a large project -- kitchen and master bedroom renovations. From day one, Ricky sat down with me to fully understand my goals and dreams for these spaces and went over everything in detail, from budgeting to timeline. Immediately, I was impressed with his professionalism and scope of knowledge. Ricky and his team have great work ethic and made this project as easy as a major renovation could be. He also was responsive to all my emails, texts, and calls. My favorite thing was while renovating the master bedroom, Ricky and his team discovered original hardwood floors that date back over 100 years to when the home was built. He quickly put together an updated quote and provided me with the option to have the floors refinished vs. laying down carpet (which is what I was originally thinking). Ricky worked with my budget and refinished and stained the original hardwood floors, which has quickly become my favorite thing about my home. In short, I would recommend Ricky for all home renovation projects and definitely plan on working with his team again in the near future.

This was my first experience with thumbtack. I hired Eagle7 to tile my master bath (floor and shower enclosure). Adonis’ quote was not the least expensive nor was it the most expensive. I am very satisfied with quality of the work. The crew arrived on time and their work showed great attention to detail. Adonis was good at communicating the schedule and planning the work. Even though Adonis was managing multiple jobs much larger than my small tiling job I don’t feel that my job was delayed. Adonis was able to complete the job in the number of days and schedule he originally gave me. I will hire Adonis again for future jobs and would recommend them to other homeowners.

Hands-down he was the nicest person I’ve ever had the pleasure of planning a project with! Truly a professional in every aspect, on top of a work ethic not many people possess. He was extremely neat and beyond helpful (he also hung my window treatment rods, and didn’t want to charge me a dime extra!) Jim not only made my bedroom look incredible, (I added a picture next to the windowsill so you could see how sharp his painting was without using tape), but knowing I had a baby in the house he removed his shoes when I didn’t even ask him to! I will without a doubt be calling him for future endeavors in our home.

I hired Foley Electric to move three electrical panels to a different location in the basement of a 3 decker, increase the service, wire two new basement bedrooms and bathrooms, wire for a newly renovated kitchen and bath on the first floor and rewire all the common hallway lights and add switches. I'm missing a few other things they did for me but in short, It was a large, dirty job and the guys from Foley Electric handled it perfectly, especially since it was done during the peak of the summer when it was sweltering hot. We had some add-ons during the process which Matt's crew were able to take care of without any hassle, the additional pricing for these items was fair too. They also recommended I add a new doorbell/ buzzer system which turned out to be very useful and something my tenants really appreciate having now. I reviewed estimates from three other electricians and Matt's was the most comprehensive. Foley Electric also takes credit cards which is a huge plus. I would highly recommend Foley Electric, I've already given their name out to few other people I know.

True professionals are as good as gold! I put off remodeling my home for years because I dreaded the hassle of dealing with contractors and designers. When I finally committed to having the work done, I went through at least 8 General Contractors and designers to find the right fit. Each of these was either overly expensive, or had overbearing personalities, or sounded like used car salesmen.... Until I connected with Byron Cuhna and Co. Byron runs a family operated construction company that handles all size jobs. Byron came in and helped my wife and I work through the design of a large addition 26x24 on with a two car garage and bedrooms/bath above it, as well as another 15x15 family room on the opposite side of the house. Byron not only gave us great design ideas, he helped us add features that would be more cost effective and efficient. Byron and his son Eric were on the job from start to finish, and made the experience of living in "construction" much more bearable, and at a price affordable enough that I can still pay my children's college tuition next year. I highly recommend Byron Cuhna construction, I will update this review with final before and after pictures of my house. Carmelo

Anthony installed lighting at very reasonable price for my bedrooms, living room and family room, most of which are recessed lighting. He responded my request on Thumbtack quickly with all details, also started his work soon with flexible schedule. Easy to communicate and did great job. He is experienced, and was very patient to explain to relieve my concerns when I had some. After finishing job, he cleaned the floor. Plus, he even helped me fixed some other things without charge! I also consulted him on central air conditioning installation, and he gave me a great deal compared to others’. Recommend to everybody.

Gigi has completed two projects in my home, a bathroom renovation and deck replacement, and both times his recommendations, work deliverable, and pricing were fantastic. He was upfront about level of effort and timing and kept to his word even in instances where bad weather threatened to impact the schedule. Would recommend highly and we will certainly call on his services again in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

For more on how long a bathroom remodel should take check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
