Rhythmic Bloom, Drums and Percussion Lessons

    (4 reviews)

I have been performing and recording professionally for over 15 years, at almost every level of the music business, from playing major jazz, pop and world music festivals with famous artist, to small clubs with local heroes; I have the experience to guide you through your own journey in music. aside from my time as a performer and educator, I have worked as musical director, helping to prepare bands for their big tours and concerts; I have the first hand experience and know how to communicate that knowledge and wisdom to you. Not only have I cultivated years of experience on the bandstand, in the studio, and as an educator and coach, I have also studied extensively; I am a graduate from Berklee College of Music, and have gone on to many further studies with some of today’s most in demand drummers and percussionists (Joey Baron, Dan Wiess, Matt Moran, Ricardo Monzon). I continue to go in-depth studying many of the classic and cutting-edge percussion techniques and methods, to guide my students towards the best ways to achieve their personal musical goals. The lessons are about getting you playing the music you love at the level you dream about. A careful balance of technique, repertoire, and theory come together to help you get where you want to be. I have explored many of the avenues of the drumming world, and know many of the best routes to get you there, all while keeping it fun, interesting, and fulfilling. I take great joy in all aspects of music and percussion, including seeing my students achieve things that they previously thought out of their reach. Seeing music enrich the lives of my students and their communities; that's why I'm an educator as well as a performer.

  • Drum Lessons with Sam Ward

    (8 reviews)

Teaching somebody how to play the drums is not like teaching somebody algebra. There are no rules, and there is no "right" or "wrong" way. Also, playing drums is not a matter of technicalities... There are some involved, but they are irrelevant unless they have been applied in conjunction with music and creativity - and that is what I do. Simply put: I love music, I love to play drums, and I love to teach.

  • Hilltop Studios

    (7 reviews)

I am a private instructor with over 20 years' teaching experience. I worked with hundreds of students on topics ranging from basic snare drum and percussion studies to advanced stylistic development on the drumset. My teaching range includes jazz, rock, R&B, funk, Latin, and blues styles. I keep an extensive library of teaching and reference materials for my students’ benefit. In 2006, I published a drumset instruction book specifically for beginning students, Building a Drumset Vocabulary. My teaching philosophy is to equip each student with proper percussion methods, and to assist each student to develop a unique musical style within his or her capabilities. In other words, working from an established and effective basic curriculum, I tailor lessons to suit the aspirations and needs of each individual student. As an instructor, I try to create a fun, relaxing learning environment in which each student can reach his or her full potential as a drummer and music lover. I offer instruction in reading skills, proper hand and foot technique, drumming styles, and chart reading, as well as drum fills, soloing, building speed and control, and working with a click track. Several of my young students have gone on to top music programs at Berklee and other colleges, and some — like Tim Molloy of Our Last Night, Luc Laurent of Pepper Rabbit, and Nick Letizio — have become professional musicians in their own right. I am also an active performer, with extensive local and national experience. My drum studio includes two complete drumsets, a practice pad and mirror for hand technique, a complete sound system for listen-and-play-along, and a digital recording system to record lessons and provide students CDs for practice and for sharing their performances.
