1. I think it's important to look the part. This is the health and fitness industry, yet increasingly, you're seeing personal trainers who look as if they've never stepped foot in a gym. It comes down to credibility: would you take investment advice from someone who just filed for bankruptcy? I live, eat and breathe this stuff and, I like to think it shows. I've transformed my physique, so when I talk to you about fitness, you feel you can trust what I'm telling you. 2. A personal training certification is incredibly easy to attain and the learning often stops as soon as the trainer is done memorizing the text book to pass the exam. In contrast, I read everything I can get my hands on and am constantly striving to stay on top of the latest research studies, science, trends, etc. in the field so that I can better help my clients. 3. Most trainers give their clients cookie cutter workouts, often times coming from the pages of a magazine: lots of generic exercises and likely things that you've either done on your own or can do on your own. The truth is, some exercises are more effective than others and that sometimes means thinking outside the box. You're paying for the advanced knowledge that a trainer is supposed to possess. The trainer should be able to customize a program specifically to meet your needs and goals. 4. Most trainers have absolutely no clue as to the role proper nutrition plays in supporting your workouts. They will tell you to eat the way they themselves eat, even if it's contrary to your goals or even if it's led to them being overweight. Or they will regurgitate the same generic dietary advice that you could have read in a magazine. I will tell you what scientific research says works best and what I have found from doing - not merely reading. I've been on every diet known to man and I know what works and what doesn't and, more importantly, I can explain it to you in a way that makes sense. 5. There are very specific things that have to take place in order for a person to make a muscle larger or burn fat, for example. There are certain "ingredients" that have to be there and certain physiological and metabolic processes that have to happen in order for those goals to be achieved. I know what they are - and can verbalize them and help you implement them. Most trainers do not. Again, this is information that you acquire on your own through researching and experimenting. Watching the improvements and progressions - in strength, muscle size, flexibility, endurance, fat loss. They come quick with my programs and my clients realize right away they are working their bodies in new and different ways and they actually come to embrace and look forward to a little soreness. Terry has received numerous awards and recognitions including the Massachusetts PGA Teacher of the Year in 2010, US Kids Top 50 Instructor in 2011 and 2012, and a nomination for NEPGA Teacher of the Year in 2010 to 2012.
Having a 7-year old boy make the world championship from using our facility and from a town who doesn't have a golf course is one of the most successful projects that we have handled.
