I had a leak caused by a handyman's work that ran from under my kitchen sink through the sealing of my basement. Eric came on Thanksgiving Day to repair the problem. I have an older house. He even changed some of the tubes that were wearing out. It was clear from the work he did that the handyman tried to take short cuts and I payed the price. Eric stayed until the work was done. He tested the system several times to make sure there were no more leaks.. and there haven't been any. I also found his prices to be reasonable. All in all, what was a nightmare ended up being a good experience. I would definitely use him again.

Jose is the man! The wife and I bought a desk and we realized we were a little in over our heads with the assembly. I put my project on thumbtack and within minutes Jose messaged me about the job. He came out the very next day and assembled a desk for me in 1.5 hours. A job that probably would have taken me hours to complete. He was polite, professional and reasonably priced. If I ever need any handyman help in the future I will definitely be contacting Jose again.

John was great! He responded quickly to my inquiry and came over the next day to address a range of electrical issues (fixed back porch light, fixed motion detection light, fixed a light switch that wasn’t sitting properly in the switch box) and other random needs ( e.g., fixing latch on backyard gate, fixed a bedroom door latch so the door could close). What I really appreciated is his explanation of everything that he was doing. He even ran out to pick up a piece I needed from Home Depot. His pricing was fair and work quality was great. I will definitely use him again as my go-to electrician/handyman. Thanks John

Mark was outstanding. He came on an extremely short notice, right on time--on Fourth of July weekend, no less. I had tried to assemble my couch and completely messed up the threading of the screws and bent one of the legs. That wasn't a problem, he had a set of tools ready and fixed the couch to make it even sturdier than it was constructed by the manufacturer. He did it in about less than an hour. Outstanding job, definitely calling him again for any future "handyman" services.

On-time, friendly, brings all of his own tools, neat and, most importantly, does a fantastic job. He had a clever solution to the plumbing for our new bathroom vanity (old vanity had different plumbing line-up) as well as mirror installation. He is so professional that Handyman doesn't explain his quality of work.

I hired Justin to accomplish a number of handyman projects around my house that had accumulated over time. He looked at my list & gave me a fair estimate for the work and scheduled a date for the work to occur. He showed up on correct date and time and with his assistant accomplished the projects in an efficient manner. The work was done in a professional manner and we have planned a second day for additional outside projects to be done when the weather turns warmer. I found Justin and his assistant Patrick to be pleasant and trustworthy in nature. I would recommend Justin Cameron for handyman type projects. Barbara

Very punctual and professional. Installed a fan, garbage disposal, replaced toilet flush kit and fixed a few other issues. Highly recommended for the work and the charges were also nominal as compared to other handymen I have used before.

Ernie was incredibly responsive and kind. We did run into some difficultly with one job in particular. Mainly a roof that had significant rotting which became apparent as the flashing got pulled away. Not only did we have rotting wood and insulation, Ernie discovered a large carpenter ant nest nestled in the roof along with all the rotting wood. Time will tell as to whether or not all of the issues were completely resolved however I do want to note Ernie's incredibly hard work and dedication to getting the job done. Danielle

Mike is amazing! He actually came early which was great! My kids had a broken ladder to their bunk bed and the entire bunk bed needed to be tightened for safety. He fixed the ladder and leveled it to the floor. It was uneven before. He tightened the entire bed, fixed a slat that had lost a screw. He did a great job and he was super friendly which I did appreciate. Quality of work was outstanding. Would definitely hire him again for any handyman need!

Kyle did several things; put up two bird houses, installed units on the outside of my house to hold hoses, installed door knobs, replaced broken handles on pantry cabinets, repaired utensil draw that was broken/droped down, fixed two radiator covers that kept falling off, fixed another cabinet door and fixed my toilet. He was so nice, professional and he did an wonderful job. Best handyman ever.

Robert and Joe are the absolute best! Job took two days, they were here ON TIME! That's important! They stripped my front door, which had four or five coats of paint on it and restored it to it's natural 100 year old beauty. Thank you Robert and Joe, absolutely beautiful work! Everyone has odd jobs that don't quite fit into a handyman catagory. I'm moving and I had to get my condo looking good fast. Gary was like a combination personal assistant- handyman He went to ace hardware and picked up special light bulbs and bought silicone to seal a leaky pipe and he worked on painting dings in the walls and around windows and corners. He is just really smart, a joy to be around and he really wants to help. Call him. You will be very glad you did.

Zack did yard work for me - removing a shed, clearing debris, removing felled trees, and cleaning gutters. He communicated clearly, did what he said he would do, was on time, worked hard, and gave me a very reasonable price.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
