I am giving 5 stars because she did a very amazing job with my dog, she was rescued and needed to get GROOMED ASAP! She was really matted, she had about 4 inches of thick fur coat. Cathy had the patience and did a lovely job. I definitely will keep using her for my dogs grooming. She dematted my dog and now she’s running around happy. Thank You! I appreciate the fact you came in less than a 24hr notice. Reasonable price as well.

Jennifer was willing to meet our needs, and offered alternative options for training our dog to stay in the yard with her electric fence. It turns out we had a rechargeable collar that wasn't holding charge. We replaced the system and our dog is now staying in the yard again. I want to thank Jennifer for bearing with us through the process. Lynn

I hired Peter to assist me in fine-tuning some commands and behavior with my 3 year old Goldendoodle. Peter responded immediately and was very detailed in his first email about how he could assist me with the specific areas I wanted to focus on. He made it very easy to schedule the training. He called to confirm day and time and gave me a short overview of how he planned to work with us. I was very impressed that he had given such in-depth thought as to how he would customize training for my dog. Peter arrived on time and was extremely effective in training not only my dog, Charlie - but me! He is calm, gentle and very understanding. My dog, Charlie - trusted him immediately - so, I did too! I plan to work with Peter again in the very near future. He is knowledgeable, professional and experienced. I learned an ENORMOUS amount from our time together. Peter is EXCELLENT at what he does. I was most impressed and very satisfied. Do you and your dog a favor - Hire Peter!

Theresa is doing great job on training my dog. She really loves dog. I can tell that she is fully engaged in training dogs. She treats dog as her little baby. I am very glad to have Theresa as my dog's trainer. She is patient and responsible. Both of I and my dog have learned a lot from her. Sprite learned to sit, down, and leave things. She becomes a polite puppy and starts to listen to my instruction. Although sometimes she is still a little bit hard to control, she had learned more that I have expected. I would like to keep touch with Theresa and let her teach Sprite more lessons. I am very appreciate for what Theresa have done.

Lisa cares about you and your dog. She has a no nonsense way of training and understands what kind of training your dog needs to be obedient. She handled our Newfoundland, Kuma very well. Not only did Kuma listen to her but he knew that she loved him as well. She takes the time to train you as well as your dog so that there will be a smooth transition to home. We went on vacation while our dog was trained and Lisa sent us messages and videos of Kuma's progress. Kuma was a strong-willed male Newfoundland that was intent on training us to be his servants! Lisa is helping us train Kuma to realize that we are in control so that we can have a peaceful loving home environment. She is so affordable and worth every penny we paid her. If problems arise when you go home she is right there to help you through any issues. We absolutely recommend that you send your dog to Lisa. You w ill not be disappointed.

In a very short period of time, Steve was able to teach myself and my dog, Oozie, several new commands that we’ve been trying to learn for weeks, with treats and clickers...If you are looking for a real dog lover and professional trainer, Steve is your guy!

I adopted my 2 year old dog Kayla only 3 months ago and Mike, along with help from his 2 wonderful dogs, has helped us reach several milestones: teaching her to get in the car, introducing her to the dog park experience, learning to walk on the leash, and most importantly, building up my confidence so I can help Kayla build up hers. I highly recommend his services.

I have a bishon fris and the groomer did an excellent job. My dog has diabetes and lost most of her hair. She is also blind but the groomer was so friendly and caring that my dog didnt refuse to stay as she usually do at other places. I will definitely come back.

We were thrilled with our experience with Reckless Adventures. Joan is very dependable, thorough and most of all - a dog lover. I was able to relax on my vacation because I trusted that she was dependable. When we got back our dog was very happy (and tired from lots of walking!) Highly recommend.

Noelle was great! We came to her for aggression and destructive behavior, and she surpassed everything we expected. We got Riley back a whole new dog!! She came to our house during training and coached us through her training process. We could not be happier with her and the care and training of our dog. I'd give her 6 stars if I could!

We couldn't be any more pleased with our training from Ken at Caliber K-9 and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for training for their dogs. We have a 4 year old Boxer mix named Wrigley who started nipping at our 8 and 11 year old children about the time that I got pregnant. With twins on the way, we needed a solution for our dog quickly. We interviewed multiple trainers including a few very highly rated trainers in Boston. We were told a variety of things about our dog including that the only option was the put him down. My husband and I were at a loss of what to do and didn't have a good feeling about what anyone was telling us. And then Ken came over for a free evaluation. He was the only trainer to focus on Wrigley just as much as us. This made a huge impression on us, along with Ken's approach and dedication. We decided to hire Ken on the spot without needing to discuss it privately. I'm writing this during our fifth week of training and our dog isn't even home for good yet. I hope this shows how much we would recommend Ken. Wrigley was a challenge for him due to the "squirrels in his head" and his lack of drive. We feel confident that we will be able to take over when Wrigley comes home and continue onto a better path with Wrigley in our home. Ken has boosted his confidence, addressed many handling issues, taught him obedience and taught us and our children how to continue the work at home. Wrigley came home for a night's stay this week and things were great during the trial run. The other trainers sold an idea of a guaranteed fix and then would send your dog home. This just wasn't realistic for our situation. Ken has offered to keep Wrigley for an extra week at no cost in order to have a smoother transition when coming home. We've also discussed additional ways that Ken can help us in the months to come including helping me take Wrigley to an anxiety-fueled vet appt., boarding Wrigley when our twins come and helping to introduce Wrigley to the new babies. Also, the one-on-one attention that your dog would get with Ken is far and above what anyone else is offering! I feel like Ken could double his price and still be worth it compared to the others we interviewed. We feel so incredibly fortunate that Ken was available when we needed his help. He's also a friend now for many years to come. You won't be disappointed in hiring him.

Jocelyn, owner of JW Pet Care, has been working with our family since the week we brought our Labrador puppy home. The thought of leaving our “baby” with anyone else, especially a person who we did not know, seemed unbearable at the time. When we first met Jocelyn, we were immediately impressed with her strong knowledge base, impressive experience, and most importantly, her comfort level and warm, natural interaction with our dog. Jocelyn’s innate love for animals shined through immediately, which really calmed our nerves! Jocelyn has consistently provided great care. She arrives within the requested time frame, feeds, plays with, and loves our dog! Each time she visits, she sends at least one, but often several, photo or video updates. What a comfort it is to know that while we are at work, our dog is receiving so much attention and TLC. As a business owner, Jocelyn is responsive, professional, understanding, and fair. I appreciate her flexibility and willingness to work with our constantly changing schedules. I have never felt like this is just a business to Jocelyn; this is her passion. We feel blessed to have found her.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
