I am giving 5 stars because she did a very amazing job with my dog, she was rescued and needed to get GROOMED ASAP! She was really matted, she had about 4 inches of thick fur coat. Cathy had the patience and did a lovely job. I definitely will keep using her for my dogs grooming. She dematted my dog and now she’s running around happy. Thank You! I appreciate the fact you came in less than a 24hr notice. Reasonable price as well.

I have been extremely happy with my dog training experience with Jennifer. She has been very helpful with getting both my dogs well adjusted in ever day life. I had two dogs out of control on leashes and out of control in my home. I now feel so much more confident with their behavior it has been my best financial decision.

Peter was very helpful. He specifically helped us with our puppy's barking, leash manners and hyperactive behavior. We've had puppy training with our dog at Petsmart but hired Peter to help with these small problem areas and he helped us a lot in just 1 hour. I'd definitely hire him again if need be.

We rescued a shepherd/malamute mix puppy from a shelter out-of-state and hired Sandy to help us with our new addition to the family. Sandy’s experience, dedication, patience and love for dogs is remarkable! From the first few sessions, I was amazed how this little puppy was on his way to become a good listener and follow commands. She is always prepared with each weekly lesson and makes it fun instead of making it a chore. She provides handouts each time she visits so that the family can continue with the lessons. Our puppy is now five months old and loves Sandy when she comes over for training. When we visit our favorite pet store, we are always given compliments on how well our puppy behaves and we credit this to Sandy for training Diesel and the family! I would definitely recommend Sandy to anyone who would like assistance training their dog. 5/5. Heidi P

John has an objective eye and vast knowledge for training any and all dog types. He truly understands the relationship between a dog and their owner and during training he provides timely and constructive feedback. John helped both myself and my husband be more aware of our body language and how our mannerisms set the tone with how our dog reacts and empowered us to be the "alpha" dog so to speak in order to have a well balanced dog. Without hesitation we would recommend John as a qualified trainer. Beth and Scott D.

We were thrilled with our experience with Reckless Adventures. Joan is very dependable, thorough and most of all - a dog lover. I was able to relax on my vacation because I trusted that she was dependable. When we got back our dog was very happy (and tired from lots of walking!) Highly recommend.

Lee was extremely knowledgeable on dog training methods and helped me with training my fearful and reactive dog. I love that all of her methods are force free and positive and that she doesn't use punishment as a means of training behavior. Lee goes above and beyond in the time she gives you in helping to train your dog and makes sure that in between sessions you have things to practice to continue with the training. She was also full of helpful tips and suggestions about keeping my dog active and busy (and therefore keep him out of trouble) when we couldn't go outside during the long cold spell we had this past winter. I would highly recommend Lee for helping with any issues you may be having with your dog!

Excellent is an understatement. This is more than just obedience training. It is insight to the dog/human relationship, from the dogs point of view. I didn't think I could change the behavior of my 4 1/2 year old dog, but I was mistaken. I just needed to stop doing all the wrong things. Don't go elsewhere just to realize you should have made Progressive Canine Dog Training and Behavioral Services your first stop!

Noelle was great! We came to her for aggression and destructive behavior, and she surpassed everything we expected. We got Riley back a whole new dog!! She came to our house during training and coached us through her training process. We could not be happier with her and the care and training of our dog. I'd give her 6 stars if I could!

I would highly recommend Deborah for pet sitting services. You can tell she loves her job and her furry clients. Deborah took such great care of my dog Dixie and my friends dog Murphy while we vacationed for a week. I don't think they wanted to come home. They were quite tuckered out upon their return. Thanks Deborah for treating our dogs like they were your own!

Katy was so sweet to our new puppy Rylie. Even though we are not new puppy owners, it was so helpful to really understand how to control their behaviors from a young age. She was very patient when sharing information on proper techniques to practice on a daily basis. I would highly recommend a few of the trainings to be one on one so you can ask questions and she can see your dogs training opportunities for future training sessions.

We couldn't be any more pleased with our training from Ken at Caliber K-9 and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for training for their dogs. We have a 4 year old Boxer mix named Wrigley who started nipping at our 8 and 11 year old children about the time that I got pregnant. With twins on the way, we needed a solution for our dog quickly. We interviewed multiple trainers including a few very highly rated trainers in Boston. We were told a variety of things about our dog including that the only option was the put him down. My husband and I were at a loss of what to do and didn't have a good feeling about what anyone was telling us. And then Ken came over for a free evaluation. He was the only trainer to focus on Wrigley just as much as us. This made a huge impression on us, along with Ken's approach and dedication. We decided to hire Ken on the spot without needing to discuss it privately. I'm writing this during our fifth week of training and our dog isn't even home for good yet. I hope this shows how much we would recommend Ken. Wrigley was a challenge for him due to the "squirrels in his head" and his lack of drive. We feel confident that we will be able to take over when Wrigley comes home and continue onto a better path with Wrigley in our home. Ken has boosted his confidence, addressed many handling issues, taught him obedience and taught us and our children how to continue the work at home. Wrigley came home for a night's stay this week and things were great during the trial run. The other trainers sold an idea of a guaranteed fix and then would send your dog home. This just wasn't realistic for our situation. Ken has offered to keep Wrigley for an extra week at no cost in order to have a smoother transition when coming home. We've also discussed additional ways that Ken can help us in the months to come including helping me take Wrigley to an anxiety-fueled vet appt., boarding Wrigley when our twins come and helping to introduce Wrigley to the new babies. Also, the one-on-one attention that your dog would get with Ken is far and above what anyone else is offering! I feel like Ken could double his price and still be worth it compared to the others we interviewed. We feel so incredibly fortunate that Ken was available when we needed his help. He's also a friend now for many years to come. You won't be disappointed in hiring him.

Kendra has been watching my dog Cooper for 5 years now. I can't think of enough good things to say about her!! It is such a relief to go on vacation and have her stay at our house. Not only does she give my dog excellent care, somehow my house is cleaner then when I left! On one particular trip as we were leaving my dog had a little cough, a couple of days later it got worse and Kendra took him to the vet, picked up medicine and made sure he was well. When we came home he was back to normal. Kendra is always reliable she has never once cancelled and has actually gone out of her way to help us out on last minute trips or emergencies. Most importantly is how much my dog loves her! I have recommended Kendra to many friends and all have been thrilled with her services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
