Michelle was great to work with. My stairwell and hallway were a challenge to paint and she did an amazing job. I'm very critical when it comes to detail and she met my expectations. She's an excellent painter, she took great care of the space in my home & even more important I felt very comfortable having her in my home. I will definitely have Michelle back for future paint jobs & recommend her highly.

Cathy is outstanding. She does it all makes your home a show piece. Simple an elegant. All around she cleans, shops an works very hard. She was at my home for 10+ hours an when she left my house was ready for an open house. Eye for detail, I have a very large home, Cathy also made the entry way outside very inviting. I would highly recommend this woman for your staging project. Competent an through an very reasonable, with a personality to match. Thank you Cathy.

WOW!!! Is all I can say when I walked in after Brenda staged my bf's house in MA. She turned a dull house into a show place. It did not look like the same place. I had to twist my bf's arm to do this...he thought he could hang a few pictures on the wall himself.... But once he saw the staging results he felt it was worth every penny...and the price was quite reasonable. It's what sold the home. His house price was on the higher end of his range and we had a P&S signed within 20 days.

Hannah has helped me redesign almost my entire house. She helped me with a guest room a couple years ago, and has helped me carry that craftsman style throughout the entire home. She’s very good about matching a particular style while still staying in a reasonable budget. She’s also very easy to work with and share ideas with. I’d highly recommend her.

We hired Juliana, owner of Creative Interiors, on the recommendation from a person that we worked with. This person contracted with Juliana to redecorate the bedroom and living room in their home. They were thrilled with the results, and commented that Juliana did an exceptionally great job. When we renovated our home, Juliana and I went shopping for fabrics for new drapes for the house; new bed comforters; and fabrics for sofas and chairs that we wanted recovered. She is a wealth of information about decorating, and she brought us to shops that we would not have been familiar with without Juliana's help. We also went to an art gallery with her, and we bought a couple of prints and had them framed. Juliana was amazing with the help she gave us choosing frames that looked the best with the prints we chose. She put 100% into helping us redecorate our house. She came to our house and helped us hang the framed prints , explaining the lighting in the rooms and the pros and cons of putting the prints on certain walls. The results were beautiful because of Juliana. Another thing that we really appreciated about her is that she taught us so much about decorating. She explained everything to us as we shopped. No matter how many questions we had, Juliana always had the answers. Juliana is a kind and caring person. She is very easy to work with. She has unending amounts of patience, and accommodated all of our needs. Juliana never cancelled an appointment with us, she was always on time, and her help was invaluable. The characteristic in Juliana that we appreciate so much is her honesty. She never tried to persuade us to purchase anything we did not like. She insisted that we make the final decisions on all purchases. Juliana's words to us were: "At the end of the day, you live in the house and you have to be happy with it." We were happy when it was completed and we still are grateful that we met and worked with Creative Interiors.

Kate is simply, incredible. Her approach, her demeanor, her way of being is all in alignment with her business - simplification. Cleaning up clutter, dealing with denial piles and letting go of all my treasured junk has been terribly difficult for me. I've wanted to have a living space I am proud of and can feel safe in. After a few years of shaming myself and not getting anywhere I found Kate. In 3 sessions Kate helped me tackle a tremendous amount and left me in a place where I could keep the momentum going on my own. In just a few months I have turned my space around and I am excited by this transformation. When I come home now each day I walk in the door and say wow. That feeling of pride and happiness is thanks to Kate who helped me move through the fear and shame around my clutter. if you choose to work with her you will find it to be one of the best, most rewarding experiences. She possesses all the right qualities to be a mindful, non-judgmental, helpful and intuitive support as you clear your way to a nicer home environment.

Can I give them 10 stars?? We had a bathtub and tub surround removed and a walk-in tile shower built in its place. First of all, I appreciated that Jon didn't balk at a smaller job. I can't tell you how many places won't even give you an estimate unless you're gutting an entire room. Jon came by within a day of my contact call, and he had great ideas. I am not good at envisioning things so his ideas and pictures were very helpful. Scheduling was great. He even worked around an unexpected visit by relatives in my home. The work was excellent. They came and went and worked away and we hardly knew they were in the house. At the end of each day, whether they were there for an hour or 5 hours, they cleaned their way out of the house and left everything in fantastic shape. Usually that area of a house is a small disaster while work is being done and until the job is finished. Not so with Top of the Ladder. That was huge for me. The finished job was all I had hoped for and more. Jon answered every question, explained every step of the process, addressed every concern and, again, cleaned everything as they exited the job and the house, down to washing my bathroom floor and the stairs. They did the demolition, the plumbing, the wallboard, the tiling. He referred us to Action Glass for the doors and was spot on with his recommendation for a job well done. AND his price was extremely reasonable. I honestly dreaded taking on this project, unsure about my ideas, the mess, would I like it, etc. I would definitely contact Top of the Ladder and Jon Lewis for any other projects we decide to tackle in our home. They are not only Top of the Ladder, they are top of the line in quality. I think it's important to say that I found Top of the Ladder through an ad. I did not know Jon or any of his workers. He's not a relative or a friend of a friend. My recommendation for this service is based purely on the work done in my home.

I can't say enough about Maureen and her team! We recently sold our home and MLT Design Group was there for us through the whole process, They made great suggestions about what we needed to do to get our home in the best possible shape to sell it for the best price. They did excellent work and by the time they were finished we didn't want to leave!! They were professional, punctual, and went above and beyond throughout the job. Our 20 year old home looked brand new and when Maureen and her team finished staging it we couldn't believe the transformation. I highly recommend them!

I put an addition onto my house then decided I didn't like my master bedroom, my daughters room, my mud room, my kitchen & dining rooms, and my living room. I started building and tearing down walls everywhere. It was so exciting until I tried to put it back together cohesively. This is where Keri from kd designs came in. I was so overwhelmed with raw sheetrock, piles of accessories I had purchased, furniture that need to be put in the right spot, and various shades of paint to update and finish the walls. I loved everything I had, but couldn't figure out how to make it work. In almost every case something "just" wasn't right. Keri came in and in less than 10 minutes figured out my style, gave it a name, Modern Farmhouse, (how cool is that?) then she went to work showing me where and how to put everything together. She went into a zone and started picking things up and making suggestions. EVERY suggestion she made was spot on! I had a few things that didn't go and a few things I needed to add. She didn't just tell me what I needed, she showed me so I could order them online, she would get them for me, or I could go find them. She knows when less is more and she knows when you need something added. I cannot say enough about Keri, she saved me so much time, money, and unnecessary labor. She seems to live and breathe this stuff and presents it in a delightful and professional manner. I call her a magician because every time she has an idea it's like magic how perfect it is....every time! If you can get her, whatever space she touches, will be your happy place in your home.

Very knowledgeable, fun to work with, stayed within budget and I was delighted with the outcome. The project was redesigning a large room off the house entryway. Flooring, furniture, color and accessories. It turned out great.

We had purchased a new home and totally re-built the first floor into an "open concept". We hired PDS to come up with a color scheme, layout and furniture suggestions for this unique property. Dorothy brought a variety of graphic and design skills (not to mention impeccable taste) to bear in her recommendations and plans. She considered our tastes and expertly wove them into the final result. We could not have been more pleased and generously recommend her to any other potential clients. Thank you, Dee!!

My husband and I had a great experience working with Hannah. We recently moved into our first home and were unsure of what we wanted to do with the space. As our house is much larger than our previous home (but not a forever home), we struggled with which areas to focus on improving and how to prioritize purchasing furniture. We weren't sure what our "vision" for the space was, and she started by helping us tease through that, offering options without overwhelming us. Hannah was able to help us make selected improvements that had a big impact, focusing on common spaces and "high traffic" areas, recommending decorations and furniture that were both within our budget constraints and timeless enough to stay with us for years to come. I loved her small style suggestions that quickly transformed a room - even just placement of furniture or artwork. Hannah explained what changes would help make our home feel more finished and quickly helped execute, based on our personal style. I would recommend Hannah over and over - if you are looking for a full interior makeover or just a small space, she's able to translate her skills to whatever the task.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

    • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
    • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
      • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
    • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
      • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
    • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
    • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.
