Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

Teles painting did a great job painting nearly our entire house interior and the trim around our porches. It looks great! Victor even fixed an issue with the popcorn ceiling in one area and it came out better than I thought it would. He and his wife were wonderful to work with and I highly recommend them.

Painting was good, popcorn ceiling was taken off good And patched good. What i did not like was the lack of clean up. Paint was on my carpet, on my linoleum tile, on stainless steel fixture, on some cabinetry. The popcorn ceiling mess somehow ended up in the refrigerator and a pile was sweeped behind the toilet. I had to call a professional carpet cleaner to get it out, but not all came out. I had to put vinyl flooring to cover up the painted linoleum. He broke my light fixture in kitchen and said that it was worthless so he only allowed $20 deducted from his contract. I would not recommend. Ever..

Honestly I been sitting on this review for days. These guys charged me $400 for super subpar work and half ass painting job on my small kitchen. First they showed up almost a half hour late. Then every question was met with another question of sorts. I have several pictures showing that they painted my brand new cabinets and painted my brand new crown molding that wasn’t even polyurethaned yet and now I have to re-sand them and re-stain also they literally painted a piece of my trim so bad they ripped it out my wall and I found it at the bottom a a trash bag. I’m giving two stars but they deserve one. I feel robbed by these ppl and it’s a shame because this was my first time using thumbtack. I will say they were polite and they worked fast but being polite doesn’t make up for shoddy work. Plus being fast obviously didn’t work.

Never had the paint job done. Wasn't told until last minute of car problems. I had to take the day off from work in order for the job to be done.

Junior did an incredible job with my home. I recently moved into a condo where the paint color selection was not ideal, but Junior came and now my apartment is a dream. He was timely, polite, kind, and professional. He got my entire condo painted (2br) in about 1.5 days. I also got a mattress delivered while he was working and he helped me bring it in!! If I could give him 10/5 stars I would!

Alex and his crew were outstanding. The job involved both painting and woodworking for a loft with 15 foot ceilings. Everything was impeccable and his communication throughout the job was excellent. I could not recommend Alex and his crew more.

From the moment I received a prompt response from Precision Paint & Design following my inquiry on Thumbtack, I was impressed with their knowledgeability and expertise. Dan and his crew arrived early each day and completed all work within the estimated time frame. Dan made sure to explain what was being done, step-by-step, and why. Everyone was polite, friendly, and helpful. I was quite satisfied with the end result, as well as the cost for materials and labor. Many thanks!

So glad that we found Jack! Friendly, extremely competent, hardworking, prompt and honest. To be honest, I was a bit worried about hiring him at first because he seemed a bit too good to be true (his quote came in about 50.00 less than the other quote we got.) But after working with Jack, I found out that he just believed in quality work at an affordable price. He was a true perfectionist with the skills to back it up. We hired him to paint some rough patches on our house only to find that he replaced our broken front lamp while he was at it (but didn't increase his price!) Total gem. Hire him for sure.
